Paul Opsommer, R-DeWitt, sponsored the legislation to end forced unionization by invalidating bargaining units made up of private employees.
\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miserybay.usanethosting.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/gallery\/11june\/opsommer.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"image\" class=\"aligncenter size-full\" \/>
\n“It was a clear abuse of power to tell private business owners, many of whom worked out of their own homes and were the sole employee of a private business that they themselves created, that their business had been hijacked by the government and that they had to pay union dues,” said Opsommer. “It’s still shocking in my mind that this happened in the first place, but I’m glad we passed this law so it can’t happen again.”
\nIn March, the Michigan Department of Human Services (DHS) stopped collecting dues from child-care workers who were unionized without consent and stopped funding the Michigan Home Based Child Care Council. Although DHS has stopped the action, the clarification ensures this won’t happen to private employees again.
\n“Including private employees and small business owners in the union machine without their knowledge or actual consent is deplorable,” said Rep. Dave Agema, R-Grandville, a cosponsor of the bill. “There is enough fraud in our state system without creating more. This legislation is designed to protect workers who don’t need the burden of a union to do their jobs.”
\nHouse Bill 4003 clarifies the law to match the existing position and practices of the Department of Human Services, which does not count private employees as government employees.
\nEarlier this year, Rep. Ray Franz sponsored similar legislation to clarify that people receiving direct or indirect state payments as part of their private employment, such as the child care providers, are not public employees.
\n“The DHS policy decision to protect the child care providers was a step that was needed quickly,” said Franz, R-Onekama. “This legislation now will help close the door on any future attempts to take away from hard working people in Michigan.”
\nThe legislation now heads to the Senate for consideration. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
House approves legislation protecting private employees from forced unionization<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-23062","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news"],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23062","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=23062"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23062\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=23062"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=23062"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=23062"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
