Work at the St. Johns High School site and north athletic field area, including the football field, is expected to begin Nov. 14, following approval of designs for both areas by the St. Johns Board of Education at a Nov. 1 special meeting.
\nThe Board reviewed a number of options aimed at keeping the entire project within the budget that was established with the passage of a $64.3 million bond proposal in May 2010. Revisions to plans were approved for the north athletic field area, new construction and renovations at the high school. The revisions in scope and size for high school construction and renovations coupled with reductions at the north athletic field area bring the project within budget.
\nWork on revising the project has been ongoing for the past two months. Reductions in the size and scope began in early September after an initial review of preliminary designs prompted the board to cut approximately $3 million to bring the project in line at that time. Board approval at the Nov. 1 meeting of additional revisions total approximately $5.4 million.
\nThe revisions maintain the integrity of the proposal that voters approved: new classrooms and renovations to existing classrooms at the high school that total 53 teaching stations; remodel\/renovations to the auditorium and stage area, music rooms, art rooms; a new gymnasium and locker rooms to meet Title IX requirements, and new pool and locker rooms to meet Title IX, and new equipment to insure pool safety; new cafeteria and kitchen; realignment of the football field, lighting, fencing and new bleachers for safety, and renovations to the existing Rotary Building along with construction of a new team building; new roof for the middle school; technology and security upgrades across the district; changes at the south athletic field areas of baseball\/softball, track and soccer.
\nWork has already been completed on other components that were part of the bond proposal including paved parking lots at the rural elementary schools along with other site improvements related to student safety and security; portions of the total technology package; and the purchase of 20 propane-powered buses, security cameras and digital radio systems for the district.
\nWork is continuing on finalizing details for other aspects of the bond proposal that voters approved including a geothermal system, new roof for the middle school and work at the south athletic fields.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
