{"id":26127,"date":"2011-12-08T21:54:54","date_gmt":"2011-12-09T01:54:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/miserybay.usanethosting.com\/wordpress\/?p=26127"},"modified":"2011-12-08T21:54:54","modified_gmt":"2011-12-09T01:54:54","slug":"halfmann","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/halfmann\/","title":{"rendered":"Star of the Sea wins national award from science teachers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miserybay.usanethosting.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/gallery\/11dec\/star.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"image\" class=\"aligncenter size-full\" \/>Janet (Kloeckner) Halfmann\u2019s recent book<!--more-->, \u201cStar of the Sea: A Day in the Life of a Starfish,\u201d has been named a 2012 Outstanding Science Trade Book for Students K-12.<br \/>\nThe award is given by The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), in collaboration with the Children\u2019s Book Council.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miserybay.usanethosting.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/gallery\/11dec\/star1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"image\" class=\"alignleft size-full\" \/>In its review NSTA said: \u201cThe book\u2019s narration is full of descriptive phrases that paint a minds-eye picture of the daily life of a starfish in its natural environment. For example, \u201cBeneath the crashing waves, another kind of star clings to the rocks with hundreds of sticky tube feet.&#8221; The words set the stage for the visual imagery of the life of a starfish. The illustrations show the large view of a starfish as well as close-up images of its tube feet. The blend of words and art provides young readers with accurate scientific information and will inspire wonder in their minds.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cStar of the Sea\u201d is published by Henry Holt\/Christy Ottaviano Books for children ages 5-9. The book is also a School Library Guild Selection.<br \/>\nHalfmann is the author of more than 30 children\u2019s books, including \u201cGood Night, Little Sea Otter,\u201d \u201cFur and Feathers,\u201d \u201cLittle Skink\u2019s Tail,\u201d and \u201cSeven Miles to Freedom: The Robert Smalls Story.\u201d She grew up on a farm in rural St. Johns and now lives in Wisconsin.<br \/>\nSigned copies of \u201cStar of the Sea,\u201d along with several of Halfmann\u2019s other books, are available at the Clinton County Art Gallery in downtown St. Johns.
