With a statewide focus on a single book : Arc of Justice, A Saga of Race, Civil Rights and Murder in the Jazz Age , by Michigan author, Kevin Boyle. It encourages Michiganians to learn more about our state, our society and our history. Thanks to our registration in the Michigan Humanities council, we have just received 15 free copies of Kevin Boyle’s book.
\nIf you have an interest in Michigan history, come to our library and checkout a copy of The Arc of Justice. If you are a member of a book club or history teacher you can register to be part of the Great Michigan Read, which every year chooses a new historical book to study. You can register your club or class by going to the following website and completing a form of interest and purpose. www.michiganhumanities.org<\/a> You then may request free books for your club or class.
\nThe National Endowment for Humanities’ purpose is to convey lessons of history to all Americans. Arc of Justice is a masterful recounting of a landmark historical event, culminating in an epic legal battle that helped lay the foundation of the civil rights movement. In 1925, African American physician, Ossian Sweet, purchased a home in a white neighborhood in Detroit. Determined to protect his family and property, Sweet chose to defend himself from the mob organized to drive him out.
\nArc of Justice provides essential historical background as Americans continue to confront issues of tolerance and equality. The Great Michigan Read program is sponsored by the Michigan Humanities Council which is supported solely by grants and donations and its purpose is to connect people and communities by supporting quality cultural programs. It is Michigan’s nonprofit affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. It supports communities through family literacy programs, special cultural and historical exhibits, book discussions, school programs, author talks, and performances that have reached thousands of Michiganians.
\nTween Program<\/strong>
\nRide on over to the Library on Tuesday April 17th from 7-8 pm for the “Wild West Tween Roundup.” Participants will enjoy Cowboy and Cowgirl Stories, Oregon Trail Snacks, Dodge City Hangman (game), and a Campfire Craft.
