Gov. Brian Calley headed an impressive list of dignitaries in attendance Thursday May 10 as St. Johns Kiwanis Club hosted its annual Prayer Breakfast in the pleasant surroundings of Clinton Commons. He was the principal speaker among others who passed along spiritual reminders and thoughtful messages related to the importance of objective and moral living and acceptance of others and their views and pursuits.

Lt. Gov. Brian Calley and Kiwanis President Marcia Peterson shared a moment following a prayer breakfast.
Before the reflective words were expressed, Judge Michelle Rick introduced members of the DeWitt High School Chamber Choir which presented a trio of songs, including the national anthem. Another, in keeping with the essence of the morning, was a tale of a wounded and dying Civil War soldier whose words leant importance to the purpose of the assembly. The group was directed by Megan Eldred who has been in that position for the past five years.
Lt. Gov. Calley’s message not only encouraged leading a life reflective of spiritual values, but to be objective in one’s views and acceptance of those that may appear to be of a different thought or pursuit, particularly in the realm of religion. In theme, taking the “high road” builds greater understanding and lessens the challenge of conflict.
Following welcome words by Club President Marcia Peterson and invocation by Rod Fuller, Rev. Tyler Barlage set the tone of the gathering by explaining that the program was arranged by the Human and Spiritual Values Committee and the theme for this year’s prayer breakfast was “One Nation Under God.” That theme was not only emphasized by Lt. Gov. Calley, but repeated by others who offered words and thoughts during the event.
Rev. Barlage enlarged on the theme by referring to Psalm 33:12 which declares “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,” and recalled how the Founding Fathers of our nation first called for prayer as they sought God’s guidance and wisdom in taking on the bold task of forming a free nation. He urged against thinking of ourselves as somehow better than those leaders, believing that we no longer need to appeal to God who loves and cares for us.
He cited the first object of Kiwanis: “To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than the material values of life,” and intimated the words were behind the encouragement to organize the annual prayer breakfast. Rev. Barlage is Pastor of Community Christian Church and chair of the Kiwanis Human and Spiritual Values Committee. Other members include Chris Bouck, Rod Fuller, Don Zimmerman, Jean Bond and Michelle Rick.
Special guests in attendance besides Lt. Gov. Calley included Liz Luttrell-Wilson, Governor, Michigan District Kiwanis and Robert Hardy, Lt. Governor, Michigan District Kiwanis.
Other honored guests were: Tony Baltimore, representing Rep.
