But there is one hazard that is often overlooked: secondhand smoke.
We all know that secondhand smoke is bad for our health, and while we have made great strides in limiting exposure in public indoor areas, we can’t overlook the fact that secondhand smoke poses a risk in outdoor areas too.
Contrary to popular belief, simply being upwind from a smoker does not eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke. In fact, being within a few feet of a smoker outdoors may expose the person to just as much secondhand smoke as if they were indoors.
When it comes to children, our most vulnerable citizens, we know that they are more likely to suffer from colds, ear infections, bronchitis and pneumonia when exposed to secondhand smoke. It is also especially dangerous to children and adults with asthma or chronic illnesses.
Smoking in public outdoor areas is concerning in other ways as well.
When children see adults smoking in a family-friendly place, like a park, they get the message that smoking is acceptable and are more likely to copy the behavior.
Another issue of concern is the discarded cigarette butts that end up on the ground. They aren’t just messy and costly to dispose of, they are hazardous as well. Small children may be tempted to put the butts in their mouth, which could result in the child choking or getting burned. The harmful chemicals and nicotine in cigarette butts can also be very toxic to a small child.
Limiting exposure to secondhand smoke in public recreation areas allows for safe, clean and enjoyable outings, and ultimately improves the quality of air for all Clinton County residents to enjoy.
For more information on the dangers of secondhand smoke, please visit www.epa.gov/smokefree.

[9

post-29732","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news
["GET
