A common characteristic separating the two used to be that type 1 was found in children and type 2 was found in adults. However, within the past two decades, more and more (186,000 per year in the U.S.) children are being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes-the type that can be brought on by obesity and sedentary lifestyles.
The fact of the matter is that video games and other electronics occupy the majority of children’s time, with more kids sitting for hours on end, instead of playing outside or being involved in sports. Being less active, combined with increased consumption of unhealthy food, means more children are living with obesity and the consequences of type 2 diabetes.
Serious health problems that can be caused by type 2 diabetes include: blindness, kidney failure, foot and leg amputations, heart attack and stroke. The longer a person has type 2 diabetes increases their risk of these side effects, putting them at the greatest risk.
The good news is there are ways to help your child avoid a diabetes diagnosis. Tips include:
· Eat healthy foods. Offer your child foods low in fat and calories. Focus on fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
· Get more physical activity. Encourage your child to get active. Sign up for a sports team or dance lessons, or look for active things to do together.
· Lose excess pounds. Help your child make permanent changes in his or her eating and exercise habits if they are overweight.
For more information about diabetes and how you can help your child take control of their health, visit www.diabetes.org.

[9

post-31502","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news
["GET
