Through this survey the City Planning Commission seeks input regarding what residents believe are the most important issues city staff and officials should address both in terms of short-term objectives and long-range goals. The emphasis is on quality-of-life, customer service and budgetary issues. We cannot stress enough how important it is to hear from residents as we set the priorities of the City for the years to come. Surveys are due in the City Offices no later than November 26, 2012, which is the same date city utility bills are due. For convenience, you may include your completed survey in with your utility bill payment. Thank you in advance for your co-operation. The survey is also available on the City’s website at www.cityofsaintjohnsmi.com
Citizen Committees: Another way of promoting resident involvement and input is through citizen committees as established by the City Commission. There are a variety of committees on which to serve, with vacancies coming up throughout the calendar year. If you are interested in serving on a city citizen’s committee, contact City Clerk Mindy Seavey at 224-8944, ext. 223.
City Commission Public Meeting Dates Set For 2013: We encourage residents and other interested individuals to attend the city’s commission meetings, which are held on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month. The public meeting dates for 2013 are now published on the City’s website. Visit: http://www.cityofsaintjohnsmi.com/ for meeting dates and a wealth of other useful information concerning the city.
Habitat To Build Second Home In St. Johns: Perhaps you’ve driven by the Habitat for Humanity home recently completed at 1521 S. Lansing Street, south of Townsend Road. The City supports Habitat’s mission of providing affordable housing for families. To that end the City Commission has approved the sale of a second city lot to Habitat so they can begin another build within the city limits. We are proud of our partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Clinton County, and applaud their good works.
CIS Trail Update: Plans for the construction of the Clinton-Ionia-Shiawassee recreational trail continue to move forward. The CIS Rail Trail is slated to be built beginning in the spring of 2013. Both the St. Johns Principal Shopping District and the St. Johns City Commission voted in favor of the trail following the old railroad corridor as it runs into and through the downtown area.
Corridor modifications for the Veterans Memorial have been addressed to the satisfaction of the involved parties. The City expresses appreciation to the Veteran groups who assisted with those modifications. City staff continues to work with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources as the final planning stages of this trail inches closer to the construction phase.
Leaf Pick-Up: With the recent windy, wet weather moving into the area most trees have shed their foliage. To avoid clogging curb lines, catch basins and the stormwater sewer system, we encourage residents to take advantage of the free leaf bag pick-up program the city offers residents.
Free bags are provided by the City, and can be picked up at City Offices on the first floor of the courthouse, the Briggs Public Library, or the Department of Public Works at 1000 N. US-BR127. Filled leaf bags put near the curb will be picked up by City public works crews. The City also provides a drop off site 24-7 for leaves, and brush at the DPW facility located at 1000 N BR-US 27. If you are in need of additional leaf bags please contact Steve Rademacher, Department of Public Works at 224-8944 ext. 229. City crews will pick-up of loose leaves raked to the curb beginning November 26th providing Mother Nature cooperates.
Traffic Control Order: The temporary Traffic Control Order establishing the three-way stop at the t-intersection at Morton and Sickels street near the high school has become a permanent order by vote of the St. Johns City Commission on October 22, 2012.
Veteran’s Day Observance On November 11th: The annual Veteran’s Day observance, to include a parade through the downtown area, is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 11th. Veteran’s Day was established to celebrate the service of ALL military veterans. Please consider honoring our veterans by attending the downtown parade and ceremony that follows at the Veteran’s Memorial north of Railroad Street.
Get Out The Vote! Election Day (Tuesday, November 6) will soon be upon us.
