{"id":31604,"date":"2012-11-01T20:46:07","date_gmt":"2012-11-02T00:46:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/miserybay.usanethosting.com\/wordpress\/?p=31604"},"modified":"2012-11-01T20:46:07","modified_gmt":"2012-11-02T00:46:07","slug":"mmdhd-107","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/mmdhd-107\/","title":{"rendered":"MMDHD lactation specialists ready to serve"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miserybay.usanethosting.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/gallery\/12nov\/simonth.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"image\" class=\"alignleft size-full\" \/>Meet Megan Schulz, R.N. and Laura Simon, R.D.<!--more--><br \/>\nBreastfeeding support initiatives in Clinton, Gratiot and Montcalm Counties has led to an increase in breastfeeding initiation rates from 70% to 75% in the last year.<br \/>\n&#8220;That&#8217;s great progress,&#8221; said Bonnie Havlicek, Mid-Michigan District Health Department (MMDHD) Community Health and Education Division Director. &#8220;We have a lot more work to do, but to have 5% more moms initiating breastfeeding in a year&#8217;s time is fantastic.&#8221;<br \/>\nHavlicek is hopeful that the initiation rate will continue to increase with the addition of two new Lactation Specialists, Megan Schulz, R.N. and Laura Simon, R.D.<\/p>\n<table width=\"75%\" border=\"2\" cellspacing=\"5\" cellpadding=\"5\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miserybay.usanethosting.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/gallery\/12nov\/simon.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"image\" class=\"aligncenter size-full\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Laura Simon, R.D<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miserybay.usanethosting.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/gallery\/12nov\/schulz.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"image\" class=\"aligncenter size-full\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Megan Schulz, R.N.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p>Scholarships were recently awarded to Schulz and Simon through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to attend a week-long lactation training in Mount Pleasant. Both passed the challenging course to become Certified Lactation Specialists and are now eligible to take the exam to become Certified Lactation Consultants.<br \/>\nThe pair is looking forward to utilizing what they learned in class, offering mothers encouragement and support as well as helping to solve breastfeeding issues and developing strategies to increase breastfeeding.
