Animal Control
\nby Maralyn Fink<\/p>\n
When my phone rings announcing my rescue coordinators name, I know that I will be on the road again.
\nIt was around a week ago when it was cold, and a prediction of snow was forecast during the night. This run involved a trip to Gratiot Co. Animal Control in Ithaca.
\nI agreed to do the trip and thought I will just watch the weather for the next day. We are not allowed to be on the road in any sort of bad conditions for the safety of the driver and the special passengers.
\nArising the next morning the window was the first place I went, well another miscalculated forecast from the weatherman.
\nI was to arrive at animal control at 3:45 pm to pick up my passengers, an 80lb pit mix, 60lb pit mix and a mere 40lb pit mix. After my arrival I met Rascheed the 80lb, Baby Girl the 60lb and no name the 40lb dogs.
\nGetting a lot of wet sloppy kisses and doing a lot of petting, I took their pictures and chatted with Sally, the person who tries to find homes for the pets after their hold time is up. Sally contacts rescues, puts pets on pet finder and shows pets to possible adopters. Without this some of them may never find a new home. Also there was Karen, the Animal Control officer who answers all the calls and is on the road a lot picking up strays and answering complaints.
\nMy arrival time for Lansing was 5 pm where I met Patty who was moving them to the west side of the state. The ride went smooth for me, but the dogs all starting barking from the time I left Ithaca.
\nI always talk to them and since I started transporting, I decided to sing to them hopefully to relax them. For some reason I sing the St Johns Fight Song to them; and after a few minutes, all is quiet and sometimes they are napping. My only question is do they quiet down because I sing, or do they quiet down so I will not keep singing. This remains to be seen.
\nI have been transporting for 6 years, and this is strictly volunteer. We provide our car and gas, but the outcome is rewarding to know that you are moving these pets to safety into rescues who will be placing them in a new forever home. Some conditions are very sad, but deep down I know I am doing something to help alleviate their pain or suffering. This is all I need to know.
\nThis trip provided no cookies — just dog biscuits.
\nPlease remember to have identification tags on your pets or a micro-chip placed in them with a contact number. This is very important to help find you the owner so your family pet can be returned to you.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Gratiot Co.
