\nMaureen Sabo recognized last week’s house, and Lynne Gregory has only good memories of Lilly Ward’s home at 309 W. Baldwin St. She says:
\n“It was built by Charles Sprague. His daughter Lily married Myron Ward who was later mayor of St Johns, they inherited the house and lived there until their deaths.
\n“When I was little she used to issue an invite to me to attend a tea party at her house. I would get all bathed, dressed up and on best behavior to go over there. She would have a little table set out under that big tree east of her house. On it was a linen cloth, little hand painted dishes her mother had done, etc. Lilly had baked little cookies and tea cakes and served tea from a pot. Sometimes Cynthia [Weed] Tiedt was also invited. We had to be on our very best behavior, sitting up straight, using our napkin, carefully chewing and only sipping the tea. We had to chat about subjects Lilly suggested like flowers, etc. After we finished we had to thank Lilly for inviting us, shake hands and go home. This happened with me many times.
\n“She also used to show me the things her mother had done, painted, etc. and told me how precious they were to her. I always wanted to go up into the tower but she told me when I was older I could go up there, I never got there!
\nLilly’s dad, “Grandpa” Sprague, used to grow grapes out behind the garage. When they were ripe we used to sneak over there from the other side and eat some. He would catch us & shoo us away. I was older when I found out he knew we were there and let us eat until he thought we might get sick on them, then he shooed us away!”
