{"id":33816,"date":"2013-03-14T20:54:39","date_gmt":"2013-03-15T00:54:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/miserybay.usanethosting.com\/wordpress\/?p=33816"},"modified":"2013-03-14T20:54:39","modified_gmt":"2013-03-15T00:54:39","slug":"scholars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/scholars\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Openlander Scholarships offered"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>St. Johns Kiwanis<!--more--><br \/>\nIt\u2019s the time of year when academic scholarship administrators spread the word of availability and one local sponsor \u2013 St. Johns Kiwanis Club \u2013 is joining the roster of opportunities.<br \/>\nFor the 22nd year, Kiwanis is seeking applications for the annual awarding of financial assistance through the Dr. Stuart Openlander Scholarship. As in the past, three grants of $1,500.00 each will be awarded to qualifying applicants in their senior year attending St. Johns High School or home school programs.<br \/>\nAccording to Marilyn Thelen, Kiwanian chairing the effort, the scholarship is a memorial tribute to<br \/>\nDr. Openlander, a long time educator, advocate of students with educational challenges and founder of St. Johns Kiwanis Club. Since inception, the Openlander Scholarship has benefited 59 students and each has received special recognition of having achieved through special and dedicated effort.<br \/>\nApplicants must be in their senior year of studies, underscored by examples of involvement in community service, positive personal activities and character. Application and information may be secured at the high school counseling office or on line at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sjredwings.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.sjredwings.org<\/a>.<br \/>\nDr. Openlander was a champion of students who displayed purpose to overcome academic challenges and his special caring has given singular objectives in awarding yearly grants. Applicants will be asked to complete a short essay on how they have overcome some hardship or special challenge in the course of their academic pursuit, and how that experience will be assisting in the future.<br \/>\nApplications must be submitted by April 15, 2013.<br \/>\nThe awarding process involves a committee of St. Johns Kiwanis members which reviews all applications.
