Tom Leonard that gives a judge consecutive sentencing powers against those who embezzle from multiple vulnerable adults or commit multiple crimes against the same vulnerable adult. Under Michigan law a vulnerable adult is someone who is elderly or mentally handicapped.
\nPublic Act 34 of 2013 gives a judge the power to sentence someone convicted of multiple counts of vulnerable adult embezzlement consecutively, meaning the sentence for each crime begins only once the previous one ends. Currently judges only have concurrent sentencing authority in these cases.
\n“As a former prosecutor, I have witnessed the life-altering consequences that vulnerable adults suffer when they are taken advantage of financially,” said Leonard, R-DeWitt Township. “I applaud Gov. Snyder for taking a stance against this fraud and believe this common-sense law is a strong step in the direction of providing more protections for our most vulnerable citizens.”
\nPublic Act 34 was given immediate effect and will be an immediate tool available to judges and prosecutors in cases of vulnerable adult embezzlement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Introduced by State Rep.
