\nListening to a band play patriotic tunes like the “Washington Post March” and “God Bless America” is a perfect way to jump-start the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
\nThat’s the plan for July 3 at the St. Johns City Park Performance Shell when the renowned Lansing Concert Band takes the stage in the weekly Concert in the Park summer series. There is no admission charge for the spirited show that begins at 7 p.m.
\nDr. Gary Sullivan will conduct the talented group of musicians in the program that features all types of music saluting Independence Day. Familiar favorites include “Stars and Stripes Forever” and “American the Beautiful,” along with special arrangements like “The Blue and the Gray,” a collection of songs from the American Civil War arranged by Clare Grundman, and “The Bugler” by Sullivan, the LCB conductor.

\nHighlighting the July 3 show is the LCB performance of “Fanfare for New Beginnings,” in recognition of the 10th anniversary season of the rejuvenated St. Johns City Park Performance Shell. The uplifting and emotional symphony was written by St. Johns native and award-winning composer Chad Rehmann, commissioned and first performed at the opening concert following renovations to the structure.
\n“We are really looking forward to hearing Chad’s music resonate once again this year,” says Bill Tennant, chairperson of the Shell Performance Committee.
\nConcert in the Park is sponsored by the Clinton County Arts Council and the city of St. Johns, with support from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts.
\nConcerts are held each Wednesday evening at the St. Johns City Park Performance Shell. The St. Johns Lions and Lioness Club staff a concession stand that offers light refreshments. All concerts are held rain or shine.
