{"id":36571,"date":"2013-08-22T20:59:32","date_gmt":"2013-08-23T00:59:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/miserybay.usanethosting.com\/wordpress\/?p=36571"},"modified":"2013-08-22T20:59:32","modified_gmt":"2013-08-23T00:59:32","slug":"tennis-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/tennis-6\/","title":{"rendered":"Kiwanis Mint Fest events lend excitement, suspense"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mint Festival Tennis Tournament<!--more--><br \/>\nThe St. Johns Kiwanis Mint Festival Tennis Tournament came off without a hitch, but a flat tire and modest bovine added a measure of suspense to the club\u2019s popular \u201cPeppermint Patty Plop.\u201d In the end, however, Festival Queen Alyssa Mee saved the day and produced a winner by tossing a ball that landed in a grid and sent Kimberly Brzozinsk home with $1,000.00.<br \/>\nOther winners in the annual raffle were habitat for Humanity which took second prize of $500.00. Four others won $200.00 each, including Betty Ammons, Jack Bergeron, Ryan VanSickle and Brenda Terpening.<br \/>\nEvent chair Marilyn Thelen explained that the flat tire delayed the cow\u2019s arrival and the animal\u2019s reluctance to perform caused a delay in the proceedings. However, as the famed bard wrote, \u201cAll\u2019s Well that Ends Well!\u201d<br \/>\nMeanwhile, at the tennis courts it was another successful tournament. The Friday to Sunday competition produced winners in the following categories:<br \/>\n<strong><em>Girls 15-18 Doubles<\/em><\/strong>: Haley Stine and Abbey Stemple of Saginwa.<br \/>\n<strong><em>Male Singles 19-34<\/em><\/strong>: 1st Place &#8211; Mike Salminen of Cadillac; 2nd Place \u2013 Travis Stewart of Ithaca and the Consolation winner was Wade Grost of St. Johns.<br \/>\n<strong><em>Male Singles 35+<\/em><\/strong>: 1st Place \u2013 Chris Johnson of Grand Ledge; 2nd Place \u2013 Nate Lounds of St. Johns. Sam DeOpsummer of California who competed at age 75, took consolation.<br \/>\n<strong><em>Male Doubles<\/em><\/strong>: John Coates and Bradley Wolfe of Lansing.<br \/>\n<strong><em>Mixed Doubles<\/em><\/strong>: 1st Place \u2013 Jeff Lawler and Helena Niblett of Holt; 2nd Place \u2013 John Coates and Chris Sanches.
