Furnaces, cars, boats, kerosene heaters, charcoal grills, camp stoves, power washers, generators &#8211; anything that burns fuel produces carbon monoxide.<br \/>\nSadly, up to 50 Michiganders fall prey to this dangerous gas each year. Most are actually exposed without even knowing it, which is why it has been dubbed the &#8220;silent killer.&#8221; It quietly enters the bloodstream and cuts off delivery of oxygen to the body&#8217;s organs and tissues.<br \/>\nThe first symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning resemble the flu, and include headache, dizziness, confusion, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting. As more of the gas is inhaled, it can cause unconsciousness, brain damage and even death within a matter of minutes.<br \/>\nAccording to the Mid-Michigan District Health Department (MMDHD), it is extremely important not to ignore these symptoms, especially if more than one person in the household experiences them.<br \/>\nCarbon monoxide poisoning is completely preventable, so be sure you know how to protect your home and family:<br \/>\n\u00b7 Place a carbon monoxide detector on every floor of your home, and make sure to place one near bedrooms.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Make sure carbon monoxide detectors have a battery back-up if it plugs into the wall.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Have a heating professional clean and inspect your wood and fuel-powered appliances yearly, as well as your chimney and vents.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Read and follow all instructions that come with fuel-powered appliances and equipment.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Be sure your generator is positioned several feet from your home, away from open windows, doors and air intakes.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Do not use fuel-powered items indoors, such as generators, gas or charcoal grills, and camp stoves, even if the doors and windows are open or if you wear a mask.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Do not use a gas oven to heat your home, even for a short time.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Do not close a fireplace damper until the fire is completely out and the coals are cold.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Do not run vehicles in the garage, even if the door is open.<br \/>\nIf you suspect you or a family member has been exposed to carbon monoxide, get fresh air immediately, and go to the nearest emergency room or call 911.<br \/>\nFor more information about carbon monoxide poisoning and poisoning prevention, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/carbonmonoxide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.michigan.gov\/carbonmonoxide<\/a>.<br \/>\nDO NOT ignore symptoms.
