Also, remember to park off the street during significant snowfall events so plows can move expeditiously up and down our 43 miles of city streets. City snow-plowing is truly a team effort, where the city utilizes not only Department of Public Works personnel, but also Water Department and Wastewater staff when necessary to keep our streets clear and passable. The hard work and coordination of staff by DPW Supervisor Steve Rademacher and Director of Utilities Steven Martin is crucial to this endeavor.
We appreciate residents’ efforts to keep sidewalks free and clear of snow during the winter months. City Code 95.85 requires a property owner or occupant to clear snow from public sidewalks adjoining his/her residence or commercial building.
Fire Hydrants: Keeping fire hydrants cleared of snow and accessible to emergency vehicles and crews is a matter of public safety. If a hydrant is located on or near your property take the time to insure it is visible and accessible during the winter months. This informal “Adopt-a-Hydrant” program is a great help to City DPW and fire personnel during this time of the year.
City Park Facilities: The city park outdoor skating rink is in fine shape for recreational skating. City crews will continue to maintain the ice for local skaters, weather permitting. The sledding hill is also open for business now that we’ve had a good accumulation of snow. If you like cross country skiing, there are rustic trails winding through the wooded section of the park you might enjoy now that we have adequate snow cover. So put on your warm weather gear and join us for some outdoor winter recreation at the St. Johns City Park.
Streets: With the passage of the four year street maintenance and repair millage, city staff has already begun planning for the first phase of street construction. One of the collateral benefits of the program will be the acceleration of the Consumers Energy underground infrastructure upgrades. Consumers will be replacing cast iron natural gas transmission mains with safer and more durable plastic conduit. The City and Consumers are coordinating the street construction projects so these gas main replacements can occur with the least amount of disruption. Stay tuned for upcoming street project details.
Medical Marijuana Moratorium Extended: At its December 9th meeting, the City Commission extended by unanimous vote the moratorium concerning commercial activity in St. Johns as it relates to the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act. The moratorium prohibits the establishment of medical marijuana dispensaries and other related commercial enterprises in St. Johns. City officials have extended the moratorium until December 31, 2014 with the expectation that the state legislature will enact legislation that will confer upon municipalities the authority to regulate medical marijuana transfers and sales at the local level.
Wishing You A Merry Christmas: The downtown is filled with the sound of holiday cheer, sparkling lights and Christmas decorations again this year. Special thanks should go out to the PSD/DDA Board for their efforts in creating this special holiday atmosphere. We also want to thank the PSD/DDA Board for one of the most successful Santa Parades in recent memory. It was a real treat to have so many brightly lit floats. Special thanks to the high school marching bands from St. Johns, Fowler and Ovid-Elsie, who braved the cold to participate in this festive event. Please take time from your busy holiday schedules to visit and shop in our community during this Christmas season. City staff and the members of the City Commission wish you and yours a Happy Holiday Season.
Merry Christmas!

[22

post-38359","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-city
["GET
