\nThe Friends of the Maple River (FOMR) will hold their Bi Monthly meeting on Wednesday May 21 at Baker College in Owosso. The meeting will be in the Welcome Room at Baker College, located at 1209 South M-52. The meeting will start at 7:00 PM. Anyone interested in the Maple River and it’s watershed is encouraged to attend.
\n\"\"The guest speaker will be Mr. Ralph Farkas who is a resident on Manitou Lake. He will discuss the ecological and environmental problems associated with Manitou Lake and the steps that are being taken to correct these problems. While the problems and their solution is specific to Manitou Lake, they are applicable to other areas within the Maple River Watershed. The Shiawassee Conservation District is working with property owners on the lake to alleviate these problems. The Conservation Staff will present a summary of the latest conservation programs that are available for landowners.
\nA short business meeting will follow the presentations and will include the election of officers and board members.
\nAfter a work bee in late April to remove log jams in the Maple River, the river is now open for safe passage by canoeists and kayakers from Ovid downstream to Bannister.
\nThe Friends of the Maple River are sponsoring a Quiet Waters float trip on Saturday May 31st for the stretch of the river between Ovid and Bannister.Those who want to kayak or canoe the river on that date should assemble at 9:00AM at the Elsie Dam site on the Maple River. The dam is located on Island Road west of downtown Elsie. Based on the desires of participants, quiet water paddlers will be dropped off at sites along the river, and their vehicles spotted for them. Every one should be on the water by 10:00 AM.
