To help area women enter \/ re-Enter workforce
\nThree women will be awarded $1,000 each from LAFCU this fall to pursue the education needed to enter or re-enter the workforce, thanks to the mid-Michigan credit union\u2019s WHEELTM scholarship program.
\nThe Women Helping Educate Every Lady (WHEEL) program awards three scholarships of $1,000 each to a woman who will attend Lansing Community College. The deadline for applications is Friday, July 11.
\n\u201cThis is a scholarship uniquely designed for women who need additional education to compete in a tight labor market whether they’ve been downsized or have not recently been working for other reasons,\u201d said Kelli A. Ellsworth-Etchison, vice president of community and business development of LAFCU.
\n\u201cBecause women are usually the parent who has taken time away from the workforce to have children or for other family reasons, it can be especially difficult for them to re-enter the workforce or to obtain additional education or certifications to advance in their present jobs.\u201d
\nWinners will be determined by a one-page essay about the applicant\u2019s new career choice, why she wants to pursue it now, and her inspiration for returning to school. Entries will be judged on content and accuracy.
\nEllsworth-Etchison said that the ideal candidate is the person who needs a few classes to complete a degree or to become licensed or certified.
\n\u201cWe believe that the success of every individual contributes to a healthy economy, and that\u2019s what we work for at LAFCU,\u201d she said.
\nEligible applicants will live or work in LAFCU\u2019s service area, which includes the counties of Barry, Calhoun, Clinton, Eaton, Gratiot, Ingham, Ionia, Jackson, Livingston, Montcalm and Shiawassee.
