They have been in business for 35 years and for 25 of those years received a small amount of funding from the State of Michigan to employ a director. Ten years ago all that funding was removed very abruptly from all senior centers in the state which meant they were faced with taking on more fundraisers very quickly to make up the deficit lost.
\nAbout that same time the state was promoting charities to get involved in “Millionaire Parties” better known as Texas Hold’em events. So the senior center jumped at the opportunity and was able to make about $10,000 each year from those events. Unfortunately, the state has now made changes to that program which makes it almost impossible for small organizations like the Clinton County Senior Center to participate in them. Therefore they are once again faced with how to make up a deficit of over $10,000 for their center.
\nOf course financial donations are always accepted. Maybe you have a parent, aunt or uncle or grandparent that was served by the Clinton County Senior Center or an organization similar. Or maybe you are someone that will need the services of the center in years to come and wants to make sure it still exists. Whatever the reason, your financial contributions are always warmly appreciated.
\nAnd you can help in other ways that will help the senior center keep costs down. Donation of Consumers Energy gift certificates would help them pay the high heat bills in the coming winter months, or grocery store gift cards would allow them to buy items they need for their meals and other programs.
\nDonation of specific items would also help them lower their costs. They play bingo twice a week and prizes are food and personal care items, so they accept things like canned fruit and vegetables, cereal, candy, dry goods, personal hygiene items, etc. (no outdated items please). They accept gently used stuffed animals, books, puzzles, decorations and glassware they can use as bingo prizes or sell in their gift shops. And, fabric, yarn, stuffing, lace, ribbon and other craft items are accept and used to make items to sell in their gift shops.
\nAnd finally they always need 6″ and 10″ Styrofoam plates, 8 or 10 ounce Styrofoam cups, napkins, toilet tissue, Kleenex and paper towels. If you can help in any way, please drop things off at the Senior Center at 201 E Walker Street in St. Johns. Financial contributions can be mailed to the center at PO Box 282, St Johns MI 48879. If you have things that need to be picked up, please call 989-224-4257.
\nIf you would like to discuss the plight of the center with a Board member, please call Brenda Terpening, Treasurer and Fundraising chair at 989-224-7248 during business hours.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Financial donations are always accepted<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-43128","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news"],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/43128","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=43128"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/43128\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=43128"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=43128"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=43128"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
