State Rep. Tom Leonard today announced he is sponsoring a summer reading contest for children in the 93rd House District, with the winner and family joining him in Lansing to be a \u201cLegislator for a Day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rep. Leonard, R-DeWitt, has teamed up with several libraries in the district for the contest, which is open to any child in first through fifth grade.<\/p>\n
Children are encouraged to read as many books as they can during June, July and August. Students or their parents can record the titles of completed books and the number of pages read on a bookmark provided to the libraries by Rep. Leonard.<\/p>\n
Readers must submit the bookmarks in the contest box at local libraries by Sept. 1 to be eligible to win.<\/p>\n
One winner will be drawn, and the winner and his or her family will be guests of Rep. Leonard at the state Capitol to be a Legislator for the Day.<\/p>\n
\u201cDuring the summer, children should read books every day so they can maintain, and potentially strengthen, the reading skills they learned during the recent school year,\u201d Rep. Leonard said. \u201cIn addition, reading for enjoyment can be fun. Kids can travel to places they have never even imagined and meet unique characters in the pages of books. Reading just four or five books during the summer can prevent a decline in a child\u2019s fall reading scores \u2013 but I recommend they should read as many as they can during the vacation period.\u201d<\/p>\n
