SJMS to present The Lion King, Jr. – April 21-23

The Lion King Jr. Rehearsal

by Maralyn Fink

On Tuesday afternoon I stopped into the St. Johns High School Auditorium to watch the Middle School students rehearse for their upcoming play on April 21, 22 and 23.

Watching rehearsal is an interesting thing as you watch the scenes and moving the sets around. This was not a dress rehearsal per say, but the needed props were used.

This is the first year that the Middle School play will be held at the High School. There are 91 students involved in the production.

The directors are Josh Heethuis, Nichole Eller, Jared Fromson and Dawn Flynn.

Performance times are as follows:

Friday, April 21, 2017 at 7:00 p.m.
Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 2:00 p.m.
Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 7:00 p.m.
Sunday, April 23, 2017 at 2:00 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased online at sjdrama.ludustickets.com.

Mountain Town Brass performs April 23 at Wilson Center

Mid-Michigan’s newest British-style brass band, the Mountain Town Brass, performs for local audiences in an April 23 concert, “Hands Across the Sea,” at the historic Wilson Center Auditorium in St. Johns. The music begins at 7 p.m.

Formed in 2016, Mountain Town Brass is an elite brass ensemble in the virtuosic British brass band tradition that successfully blends impeccable musical virtuosity with an enjoyable audience-friendly ambience. Members of the band are all exceptional brass players from university, professional and community circles and virtually come from every corner of the state. The band is based in Mt. Pleasant.

“Mountain Town Brass is an amazing brass band,” says Bill Tennant, concert coordinator. “The band has accomplished a lot in the short time that they’ve been together. The incredible literature they are performing and the level of playing is exceptional. I feel honored that they are bringing their spring concert to St. Johns for us to enjoy.”
Travis Scott, a D.M.A. student at Michigan State University, conducts Mountain Town Brass. He holds degrees from the University of Akron and the University of North Texas and is the instructor of tuba and euphonium at the University of Windsor.

“We are featuring two major ‘firsts’: Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” arranged for brass, which represents America’s first classical hit, and Fletcher Henderson’s “Labour and Love” which was the first original piece used at the U.K. National Band Contest in 1913.” The concert also includes works by Wagner, Bizet and others along with several soloists.

“Sunday’s concert will inform, delight and entertain audience members of all ages,” Tennant says.

There is no admission for the concert, but donations will be accepted to help defray concert costs and help towards the ongoing Wilson Center Auditorium renovation project. The auditorium is located at 101 W. Cass St. near downtown St. Johns, just south of the courthouse.

S’Moves Alive! 2017 offers unique music program – April 21, 22

S’Moves Alive! 2017 is a mix of dance, music and song that will stimulate all the senses in a series of fun, short, creative presentations April 21-22 at Central United Methodist Church across from the Michigan Capital Building.

Dancers Roberta Otten and John MacDonald perform solos and duets to music in the pop, classical, folk, and abstract music genres. The wide variety of performances pieces include “Being,” an eclectic solo composition of abstract movement, video imagery, sound and light while a duet, “Celestial Energies,” creates a mysterious environment with movement, music and special lighting.

In addition to Otten and MacDonald, a pair of musicians are part of this year’s S’Moves Alive 2017 program. Clarinetist Bill Tennant will accompany several dances and perform an original composition. A special guest appearance by Spitzer Space Telescope presents a unique style of folk music and sea shanties with fiddle, guitar and voice.

“Our upcoming S’Moves Alive! 2017 program has to be one of the most diverse programs we’ve ever
done,” Otten says. “Having live music for the first time – the original clarinet and wonderful addition of Spitzer Space Telescope – makes this year’s program something truly special.”

Otten and Rosemary Edgar dreamed up S’Moves Alive in 2004. The veteran performers decided to create a show and recruited LCC students and guests to present a program of dance, story and song as a fundraiser for the LCC Dance Department. Edgar performed with S’Moves Alive! until 2009. MacDonald joined the group in 2005.

This year’s program is the 11th concert. Previous shows have been presented in senior assisted living centers in Holland, East Lansing and Lansing.

Otten has performed and taught dance in the Lansing area for over 30 years. Her choreography appeared in many LCC theatre and dance productions, Happendance, Riverwalk Theatre, and Sunsets with Shakespeare. In addition to several nominations she received the Lansing City Pulse Pulsar Choreography Award in 2006 for her work in “The Many Deaths of Shakespeare” at LCC.

MacDonald has been a physician in St. Johns since 1981. He began performing modern dance in college, but put it aside in pursuit of his medical career. He rediscovered his passion for dance in the past 15 years and really enjoys the creative challenge. “I enjoy working with movement which can be inspiring and intellectually stimulating.”

Tennant is a retired music teacher from St. Johns. He taught public school music for 36 years and has written several compositions including an opera that was performed on a program at Michigan State University. He continues to serve his community in a number of ways keeping the performing arts well and alive in the mid-Michigan area.

Spitzer Space Telescope is currently based in Chicago. This artist and musician presents his unique style of folk music and sea shanties with fiddle, guitar and voice. His current tour will include travel to the East Coast and Scotland. For detailed information visit www.sstmusic.com

S’Moves Alive! 2017 begins at 7:30 p.m., both nights. There is no admission charge. Donations will be accepted.

The Friday Night Fish Fry

by Maralyn Fink

Friday night I attended the Knights of Columbus fish fry at the Columbian Hall. I needed to see about the rave of fish fries.

When I was a child I had plenty of fish to eat and enjoyed them; but as of now, I do not eat them like I did back in the day.

The K of C has been doing these fries for 25 years, usually starting in March and do them for six weeks. They appreciate the support of every one. Everyone loves the fish but; love the camaraderie, getting out of the house and seeing friends and neighbors.

There are 40 volunteers and 2 shifts every week by the K of C members.

The menu includes fish, baked potato, steak fries, green beans, mac and cheese, coleslaw, applesauce – not to mention the homemade cakes.

The average meals served each time number 600 meals including take-out. The price is $9.00 for all you can eat, and the early bird special between 4 and 4:30pm gets you 50 cents off the price.

All funds go back into the community to support charities and youth activities.

Spray park receives grants

Summer will be here before you know it, and good things are happening at the spray park.

In December the Parks Department was awarded $96,700 through a Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund grant to renovate the bath house.

Then Commissioner Eric Hufnagel called our attention to the Laura Jane Musser Fund grant. The Parks Department was again successful with this application, gaining an additional $18,462 to complete improvements not covered by the DNR grant. These funds will be used to provide family restrooms/changing rooms within the bathhouse, a much-needed addition to the spray park.

Please be patient; renovations will likely be complete for the 2018 spray park season.

Jones surviving spouse bill signed by governor

Gov. Rick Snyder has signed legislation sponsored by Sen. Rick Jones that alleviates the responsibility of funeral directors from having to make a legal decision about whether a spouse is truly a surviving spouse.

“The purpose of this new law was to address a growing situation that funeral directors were dealing with in Michigan: determining if someone is a surviving spouse,” said Jones, R- Grand Ledge. “It is becoming more common in our society for married couples to separate and not legally get divorced. In these cases, the spouses move on with their lives and oftentimes move in with a significant other. The problem arises when that person dies. Who has the right to make the funeral arrangements?”

Senate Bill 39, now Public Act 20 of 2017, relieves funeral directors from having to make a decision determining a surviving spouse if there is a conflict and allow for an appeal process in probate courts to determine the issue.

In Michigan, the list of who can make funeral arrangements for a decedent includes, in order: a designated individual; a surviving spouse; and the decedent’s children, grandchildren, parents, grandparents and siblings.

“If there is a disagreement now on who is the surviving spouse and who has the authority to make decisions on right to disposition, those people can appeal in probate court,” Jones said. “This was a decision that funeral directors should never have been forced to make, and now it will go to a family court judge who is best trained for these emotional legal disputes.”

Annual Student Art Exchange now at the Briggs

Imagine you could be instantly transported to faraway Japan, where you would see temples, fireworks, funny-looking bugs and happy Japanese children playing together. The exciting news is that you can see all those things and more just by stepping inside Briggs District Library in St. Johns across from the Depot.

Kloe Foster, a first-grade student at Oakview South Elementary in St. Johns, looks at a Japanese picture showing a bus decorated like a tiger; that comes from a favorite children’s book in Japan.

The twenty-second Annual Student Art Exchange is now hanging throughout the library on bulletin boards, the ends of bookshelves, the cloud in the adult section, and lots of banners from the ceiling. Not only can you see interesting and exciting artwork by Japanese students in elementary and junior high, but also lots of great art created by students from students in the St. Johns elementary schools, under the direction of Ms. DenHerder and Ms. Parsons, the art teachers. This colorful exhibit will be on display at Briggs March 27 through April 29.

The Japanese art was done by students in our Friendship City, Konan, which is in Shiga Prefecture in Japan. They send their artwork to display with ours each spring and afterwards we send our artwork to them to display. It is a good way to help everyone feel like they know a little bit more about each others’ lives.

This annual art exhibit is a cooperative effort coordinated by the Clinton County Arts Council between the St. Johns School District, Briggs District Library, and the St. Johns – Konan Friendship Society, with special help from students in the National Art Honor Society of Ovid-Elsie High School, who faithfully hang up the whole exhibit on a Saturday afternoon and carefully take it down four weeks later.

Clinton County Arts Council is grateful to receive some operational funding in 2017 through a competitive grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Museum asks: Where are all the old gas stations?

At one time there were many gas stations in St. Johns. East State Street was known as “gasoline ally.”

There were gas stations in the downtown area and out of town on north and south US 27.

Without photos of those old service stations a very significant part of our local history is lost.

Did someone in your family have a gas station anywhere in Clinton County many years ago?

You can help the Paine-Gillam-Scott Museum present a very interesting exhibit on early transportation and at the same time insure that some of your family’s history is not forgotten by emailing your photos to pgsmuseum@hotmail.com or call 989-224-2894 or 224-3064 to arrange for the photos to be scanned. Any transportation related photos would be appreciated.

These long-form comic books have been used to retell the stories of popular fiction authors, mythological heroes, and Civil Rights icons. The next selection of the Bookaholics book club is the Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel MAUS, written and illustrated by Art Spiegelman. MAUS tells the story of Spiegelman’s father, Vladek, a Jewish survivor of Hitler’s Europe. Vladek’s harrowing story of survival is woven into the author’s account of his tortured relationship with his aging father. Against the backdrop of guilt brought by survival, they stage a normal life of small arguments and unhappy visits. This astonishing retelling of our century’s grisliest news is a story of survival, not only of Vladek but of the children who survive even the survivors. New members are welcome when we meet on Thursday, April 20 at 6:30 at the library. Copies of MAUS are now available.

SJPD crack case of rail car vandalism

On January 23, 2017 the St. Johns Police Department began an investigation in reference to a Malicious Destruction of Property (MDOP) complaint where one of the historic railroad cars at the St. Johns Depot was vandalized with spray paint and marker on both the inside and the outside. During the investigation of this incident, it was determined that several other buildings and signs along the Fred Meijer CIS Trail had also been vandalized around the same time period.

Through several weeks of diligent investigation by officers, four juvenile suspects were identified as being responsible for the vandalism. Two of the juvenile suspects were charged with B&E and two counts of MDOP for their involvement in the vandalism of the rail car and some signs. The other two juveniles were charged with MDOP for their involvement in the vandalism of signs and buildings along the FMCIS Trail.

The St. Johns Police Department is working in conjunction with the Clinton County Arts Council, Clinton County Prosecuting Attorney, and Clinton County Juvenile Court to assure that this incident will have the optimal outcome.

The St. Johns Police Department would like to thank those that came forward with information to assist us in solving this case and want to encourage the public to continue to come forward with information in similar situations.

The Friends of the Maple River are hosting their 11th Annual Spring river clean-up day on Saturday April 8th. If river flooding is encountered on the 8th, the clean up will be delayed until April 15th.

This clean up event is seeking volunteers to help clean up trash at river bridge crossings and access sites along the banks of the river, and to help crews working from boats clearing safe boating passage through log jams for recreational canoeist’s and kayaker’s. Anyone interested in helping on this environmental conservation project is asked to meet at 9:00 AM at the El-sie/Maple River Dam site located on Island road one mile west of the Village of Elsie. Work crews will be organized, assignments made and supplies provided. At the 9:00 AM briefing. Be sure to bring heavy duty waterproof foot wear because the trash pick up sites may be muddy. You should also bring leather work gloves to protect your hands. If you are volunteering to help with the log jam removal work bring along your John Boat or canoe and a chain say. Also bring along a coast guard approved personal flotation device to wear when on the river.

The Friends of the Maple River are also interested in volunteers to adopt a section of the Maple river to remove log jams or obstacle’s, throughout the summer months from fallen trees that may block the river after a storm of large rain event.

For more information or if you have question about helping on the Friends of the Maple River spring clean up, you should call Jack Nutter at 989-862-5541. Also like us on facebook at Friends of The Maple River or check out the organizations web site at friendsofthemapleriver.org.

Monday Update: SJPD crack case of rail car vandalism

Dennis Scott has a story – and he’s sticking to it

by Rhonda Dedyne

Nearly three million Americans served in uniform during the Vietnam War and each has a story to tell. Dennis Scott is one of those honored veterans. His stint “in country” from August 1967 to July 1968 is part of the life story he’s sharing in a new book, ” . . . And I’m Sticking to It! A Journey in the Vietnam War through Letters Home.”

The respected, long-time St. Johns resident calls the book “a labor of love.”

“It was really written for my children and grandchildren who have asked questions about my time serving in Vietnam,” Scott says, noting that his father, George, certainly had similar experiences in World War II when he served and was wounded during battles in the Caroline Islands. “It was difficult for him to talk about – he never really wanted to open up and I understand how he felt. Writing this book has been a positive thing for me to do.”

Letters Scott had written to his parents during the war was a logical starting point in the story-telling process. “My mother, Dorothy, had saved all the letters I wrote and she gave them to me a few years ago,” he says. “I sorted through them and put everything in chronological order, and then selected ones I wanted to incorporate into the book.”

In addition, Scott wrote Authors Notes which accompany many of the letters and provide background and historical information about incidents contained in the letters. The notes help readers gain a better understanding of what Scott was writing about in each letter, and personal photographs taken by Scott and his “buddies” are also an important part of the book.

Scott was part of Armored Scout Division of the 2nd Squadron, First Cavalry Regiment during his tour. Stationed near Pleiku in the Central Highlands, Scott’s division ran convoys during the day from the camp to the Mang Yang pass, Kon Tum and Dac To. After dark, units within the division had the assignment of patrolling roads and guarding key bridges which the North Vietnamese Army targeted for “removal.”

One of those regular guard duties involving Bridge Bravo turned out to be anything but routine. In his letter dated Feb. 8, 1968, Scott tells his parents, “Don’t worry too much about the action going on over here. Charlie’s starting his last big push before the monsoons and he’s getting his butt kicked.” Scott’s author’s note provides a detailed description of what happened that night when his unit withstood a NVA ambush and inflicted causalities – without losing any of its men. The unit was ultimately cited for valor , and Scott was honored with a Bronze Star.

Incidents like those that showcase bravery and courage are an integral part of his Vietnam story, as are letters that display Scott’s sense of humor – unique camp food entrees – and a genuine spirit of camaraderie among unit members that continues to this day including regular reunions and meetings of the regiment. Scott has sent copies of the book to several of his buddies, prompting requests from others. “It makes you realize how important it’s been for all of us to talk about Vietnam,” he says. “There’s so much love for one another whenever we talk or get together – it helps a lot.”

Scott is quick to acknowledge the importance of a special person, his wife Janet, in his life before and after the war. “She’s always been there for me,” he says, citing her patience during the past five years as he’s worked on the book. “Our daughter, Elizabeth, had suggestions for the book as did our son, Bill. His wife Kendra is a graphic artist and she was instrumental in putting the book together and helping with publishing.”

Family members, friends and some members of Scott’s 2/1-Cav “Fighting Fourth” Infantry Division are enjoying reading the book; additional copies may be ordered based on requests from other individuals.

Scott will sign copies of the book at a game night March 25, 1-5 p.m., hosted by the VFW Post 4113 in St. Johns where Scott has served in numerous capacities over the years. Donations of $10 per book will be given to the 2/1-Cav Association.

For information on “. . . And I’m Sticking to It!” contact Scott at (989) 224-2601.
