Red Cross urges donors to give the perfect gift this winter

The American Red Cross urges eligible donors to give the perfect gift this holiday season – a lifesaving blood or platelet donation. By rolling up a sleeve, donors can help ensure patients continue to receive treatment throughout the holiday season.

Busy holiday schedules and travel plans make it more challenging for regular donors to give, and many businesses and organizations postpone hosting blood drives during the holiday season for these same reasons. This can lead to a decline in blood donations, but the need is constant.

“While many of us gather with friends and family this time of year, patients may spend the holidays in a hospital room,” said Todd Kulman of the Red Cross Great Lakes Blood Services Region. “The need for blood doesn’t take a break for the holidays. Please make an appointment to give the most meaningful gift of all – the gift of life through a blood or platelet donation.”

To encourage donations around Thanksgiving, those who come to give blood or platelets from Nov. 24-28 will be emailed a set of recipes from celebrity chef partners Mario Batali, Rick Bayless, Richard Blais, David Burke, Mike Isabella and Ellie Krieger.

Power Red maximizes donations
Blood donors with type O, B negative and A negative blood can help more patients with one appointment by making a Power Red donation at select Red Cross blood donation centers and blood drives. Power Red donors give a concentrated dose of red blood cells – the most commonly transfused blood component. Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body and are frequently give to trauma and surgery patients. During a Power Red donation, red blood cells are separated from other blood components, and plasma and platelets are then safely and comfortably returned to the donor.

“With just a little extra time at their appointment, donors can have an even greater impact on patients in need,” added Kulman.

How to donate blood
Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood donors can now save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, prior to arriving at the blood drive. To get started and learn more, visit redcrossblood.org/RapidPass and follow the instructions on the site.

For more information, please visit redcross.org or cruzrojaamericana.org, or visit on Twitter at @RedCross.

Homeless Awareness Week

At the St. Johns City Commission’s regular meeting on Monday, November 14th the commission adopted a resolution proclaiming November 12-20, 2015 as Homeless Awareness Week in St. Johns.

For more than twenty years, the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness and its partners have actively promoted Homeless Awareness Week throughout the state of Michigan. The purpose of the proclamation is to educate the public about the many reasons people are homeless, including the shortage of affordable housing in St Johns for very low income residents; and to encourage support for homeless assistance service providers as well as community service opportunities for students and school service organizations.

There are many organizations committed to sheltering, providing supportive services as well as meals and food supplies to the homeless including the member organizations of the Clinton County Housing and Homeless Coalition.

The St Johns City Commission recognizes that homelessness continues to be a serious problem for many individuals and families in St. Johns. The intent of Homeless Awareness Week is consistent with the activities of the Clinton County Housing and Homeless Coalition.

The St. Johns City Commission encourages all citizens to recognize that many people do not have housing and need support from citizens and private/public nonprofit service entities.

Flag Tribute to Veterans on view for Veterans Days

Flags are scheduled to be put up at 8 A.M. by veterans, veteran family members and other volunteers. In November the flags will come down at 5 P.M.

Four flag wagons are maintained for moving and storage of the flags. If bad weather is predicted on the day the flags are scheduled to go up, the flags will not be put up because no one wants to store more than 500 wet flags.

The number of flag holes in the cemetery is dictated by the Mount Rest Cemetery Board, but hole creation and maintenance is done by the committee and flag volunteers.

At the cemetery main gate the Flag Tribute to Veterans program also displays flags of the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Merchant Marines, and the POW/MIA flag. Police, Fire Fighters flags are also displayed.

St. Johns Police Department receives good news

The St. Johns Police Department recently received two pieces of good news.

The SJPD was advised that they received a grant to help purchase new portable radios. The $15,000 Byrne Justice Assistant Grant will help cover two-thirds of the total cost of the police departments portable radios. This grant enables the department to replace their current radios that are nearly 20 years old as well as become P25 compliant, a standard set to go into place in 2021, while not burdening the overall budget.

This project was supported by Byrne JAG grant #2015-MU-BX-0964 awarded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), and administered by the Michigan State Police (MSP).

Lead poisoning is preventable

Right now in the U.S., nearly half a million children, ages one to five, have blood lead levels high enough to damage their health. Could your child be one of them?

Low levels of lead can be found in the soil, the air, the water, and on things we touch. Most often, lead from these sources isn’t cause for concern, but when higher levels are present, it can be very harmful, especially to young children.

A lead-poisoned child may seem healthy, but could have learning and behavior problems, slowed growth and development, hearing and speech problems, headaches, weight loss, irritability, tiredness, hyperactivity, and even damage to the brain and nervous system. These problems can lead to lower IQ, decreased ability to pay attention and underperformance in school.

The majority of children with lead poisoning live in or spend a lot of time in a home built before 1978. Lead can be found in an older home’s drinking water if it is supplied by lead pipes and plumbing fixtures. But usually, the culprit is lead-based paint, which can be toxic, especially to a young child. The older the home, the more likely it is to contain lead-based paint.

The most common places for lead-based paint to be lurking are in an older home’s windows, cupboards, doors, porches, and outdoor surfaces. Something as simple as opening and closing a window painted with lead-based paint can send lead dust into the air. The dust then settles to the floor and gets on children’s hands and toys, and eventually makes its way into the mouth.

Lead can be found in other places, too, like in some toys and toy jewelry. Certain hobbies and jobs that involve working with lead-based products can also pose a danger if the dust is brought into the home on clothing, shoes, hair or skin.

What can you do to reduce your child’s exposure to lead?
· Before you buy an older home, ask for a lead inspection and be sure to have the water tested.
· Get your young child tested at one and two years of age, even if he seems healthy. Private insurance coverage varies, but if your child is enrolled in Medicaid, the test will be covered. Mid-Michigan District Health Department offers lead blood tests to children enrolled in the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. For more information, call 989-224-2195 in Clinton County, 989-875-3681 in Gratiot County, and 989-831-5237 in Montcalm County.
· Renovate safely. Common activities like sanding, cutting and replacing windows can create hazardous lead dust. If you’re planning on renovating an older home, use contractors certified by the Environmental Protection Agency.
· Stay up-to-date on current recalls by visiting the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website at www.www.cpsc.gov and remove recalled toys and toy jewelry as appropriate.

The Castle will have 30 two bedroom apartments. The rents range from $506.00 to $800.00. Occupancy is anticipated by October of 2017. A reception was held after the ceremony at the Court House.

Equities, Phillip Seybert and Garrett Seybert, say they would like to thank the following for their efforts to make this development possible:

– City of St. Johns
– City Commission
– Planning Commission
– MSHDA Great Lakes Financial Group, PRHCLLC
– Cinnaire
– KMG Prestige
– HUD

Thank you, Bob Craig, for the information and picture taking help.

City Manager’s Newsletter

Leaf Collection: Autumn is definitely upon us. Fallen leaves are carpeting residential yards. We commend our residents for their widespread use of garden bags for leaf disposal. Please remember it is an ordinance violation to rake leaves into the street. This practice creates a potential public safety hazard and creates backups of the storm water sewer system. Violators will be subject to a civil infraction fine. If a resident needs additional yard waste bags they can be obtained at no charge from the City Offices, Briggs District Library or by contacting DPW Supervisor Jeremy Ritter at 989-224-8944, ext. 229.

Elections: Remember to vote on Tuesday, November 8th! Exercise your civic right and fulfill your civic duty by going to the polls. A full ballot of candidates could lead to some delays in voting, so arrive as early as you can at your polling place. Any questions concerning absentee ballots, precinct polling locations or other election questions can be directed to City Clerk Mindy J. Seavey by calling 989-224-8944, ext. 223.

Music In The Park Report: Bill Tennant attended the City Commission’s October 24th meeting at which time he gave a summary report of the highly successful 2016 Music in the Park series. These musical performances are supported by the City of St. Johns and the Clinton County Arts Council as well as the donations of concert goers. Each year we experience better talent and larger crowds. Bill Tennant is to be commended for the many hours of hard work he puts into arranging for and putting on these terrific summer evening concerts. The City appreciates the relationship with the Clinton County Arts Council in providing this quality entertainment venue and the exceptional talent selection by Mr. Tennant.

Hicks Property: The City is evaluating the possible purchase of land on which the Hicks grain elevator is sited near the railroad depot north of the CIS rail-trail. The City Commission recently approved funds for a Phase II environmental evaluation of the property. This evaluation will determine the extent of environmental contamination on the site, which will then allow the City to then obtain an estimate of the cost of remediation. The staff and Commission are supportive of this acquisition providing the property may be used for intended purpose.

Groundbreaking For Senior Housing: On Friday, October 21st a groundbreaking ceremony was held for Castle St. Johns, a downtown apartment complex being developed for low to moderate income senior citizens. Phil and Garret Seybert of P.S. Equities Inc. represented the development company. Local and state dignitaries attended the event, as well as representatives from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, who provided the tax credits and the financing partner Cinnaire. PS Equities President thanked the City staff and Commissioners the PSD/DDA board and others for the support. Expected completion date for the project is in the fall of 2017. For more information regarding rents and apartment availability please contact P.S. Equities, 805 W. Broadway Ste. 1, Mt. Pleasant, MI 48858, or call (989) 779-9995.

City Commission Supports Blue Bus: The City Commission adopted a resolution at its October 24 public meeting in support of the Clinton Transit Millage Renewal Ballot Proposal. This important public transportation entity serves many citizens who do not drive or have private transportation options. There is a critical need to maintain funding for this service at a time when demand is increasing across the county.

Halloween Hours: Trick or Treat hours for Halloween in the City are from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Please drive carefully on city streets during this time as little ones (and not-so-little ones) navigate the neighborhoods while making their rounds.
