LAFCU recalling promotional flashlights

LAFCU is reporting a possible problem with the mini-flashlights it ordered and distributed in 2015.

A member contacted LAFCU yesterday saying the mini-flashlight, which was attached to a keyring, exploded after he used it. It’s believed to have been a problem with a battery. No one was harmed, but LAFCU would like anyone who has one of these flashlights to please discontinue using it. LAFCU received 750 of these mini-flashlights in 2015.

Anyone who brings one of these flashlights to a LAFCU branch will be given a new item – not a battery-operated flashlight.

LAFCU branches are located in Charlotte, Corunna, DeWitt, Eaton Rapids, Mason, Owosso, St. Johns and South and West Lansing.

World renown musicians Join The Mountain Brass – December 16

When was the last time you had a chance to hear and/or see someone who was the best in the world at what they do?

You will have that opportunity on Saturday, December 16 when the elite brass band, the “Mountain Town Brass,” present their holiday concert, “A Winter’s Night with Steven and Misa Mead.” The concert will be held in the beautiful historic Wilson Center Auditorium and will feature, direct from the UK, Steven Mead and his wife Misa, world-renowned euphonium players. The concert will start at 7:00 p.m.

Steven Mead needs no introduction to brass enthusiasts around the world, as his playing and teaching have become known to virtually all who have a love for the instrument known as the euphonium. Considered by many to be the best euphonium player in the world, Steven is in demand the world over with over 75 solo performances a year, plus his many engagements as a clinician, teacher and adjudicator.

“The first time I saw him perform, I was a young budding musician,” says Travis Scott, Mountain Town Brass conductor. “The experience changed my life forever. He has that affect on people.” Steven is known for his beautiful sound and technical prowess – a performer to be remembered.

Steven will be performing with his amazing wife, Misa Mead, also a virtuoso euphonium performer originally from Kumamoto, Japan. Misa is highly respected in her own right as an elite musician having won many competitions and awards worldwide. Her debut CD “Journey” was released to great critical acclaim. Misa is also active as a freelance composer and orchestrator – she is in demand around the world.

Steven and Misa began playing duets virtually as soon as they met in 2013. Their first album, “Love’s Joy” released earlier this year, has met with critical acclaim. They were married in March of 2014 and currently reside in Manchester, England.
“A Winter’s Night” will also feature several holiday favorites including Leroy Anderson’s “A Christmas Festival” along with Mel Torme’s “The Christmas Song.” The great “Mountain Town Brass,” which is made up of some of the best brass players from around the state, along with the phenomenal soloists, along with a wonderful varied program, all add up to a concert you won’t want to miss.

A free will offering will be taken with all the proceeds going towards the continual renovations of the Wilson Center Auditorium and to the Mountain Town Brass operational expenses. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. The Wilson Center Auditorium is located at 101 W. Cass St. in downtown St. Johns, just south of the courthouse.

It’s a crime to be hungry

The annual Fill A Cop Car event is this Saturday, December 9 from 10 am – 2 pm. Law Enforcement officers throughout Clinton County will be asking for your help. The goal is to fill the cop cars with groceries. Officers will be at your local grocery stores with the purpose of helping to fill our local food banks with non-perishable food items.

Police Officers chose their profession so that they can help others. During this time of year they often experience families in need, but they don’t have the ability to help directly. By filling the cop cars, they can see to it that those who need a helping hand can get it. They are asking that you purchase an extra item or two and help them help those who are less fortunate. The back seats of the patrol vehicles are usually used to transport people that have run afoul of the law. Help them put them to good use.

Officers will be at the following locations in Clinton County:
– Kroger, 900 S. Business 127, St. Johns
– Wal-Mart, 1165 Superior Drive, St. Johns
– Bath Township Hall, 14480 Webster Road, Bath
– Montecello’s Market, 16912 Marsh Road, Bath
– Village Food Pride, 501 S. Main Street, Ovid

All food collected at these locations will be donated to the food banks at The Basic Needs Center and Redeemer United Methodist Church in DeWitt. The officers of the St. Johns Police Department, Clinton County Sheriff’s Department, Bath Township Police Department, and Ovid Police Department appreciate your generosity during this holiday season.

Community Fund chugging along

St. Johns Area Community Fund disbursed $8,100 this year for a total of $45,000 over its 7 years of grant-making in an effort to make St. Johns a better place for all of us to live, work and play.

From helping “Compassion in Action” provide weekend food backpacks for school kids in need to helping Clinton County Arts Council fund a new mural on the Gil-Roys building, helping here at home is the goal.

Their annual fall fundraising campaign is underway to provide funding for next year’s meaningful projects. You can help with contributions for current operations and grant making. Contributions are tax deductible to the extent provided by law. Write checks to SJACF, PO Box 33, St. Johns, MI 48879, or contribute on-line to our endowment fund at www.sjacf.org.

Yes, your community fund is endowment based too. Our endowment provides a perpetual distribution to be used in our community. In 2017 the endowment provided a meager $2,616. Community Fund Directors recently launched a campaign to attain an endowment of $500,000 supporting perpetual distributions of $20,000 each year, forever. Endowment campaign donor’s gifts range from $200 to $25,000. Since 2016 our Endowment grew from $65,000 to over $270,000 in assets and pledges. We’re more than half way home.

Endowments are a splendid way to show appreciation for the time we’ve spent here. The six geographically diverse Mazzolini siblings recently established The Mazzolini Family Fund to honor their parents and grandparents. According to family spokesman, Dean Mazzolini, “Learning about our community endowment provided us a giving choice that all six of us were comfortable with. We valued the opportunity to remember our fore bearers with a permanent gift, investing in the future well-being of the St. Johns community, every year, forever”.

Curious about gifts that give over and over again, forever? Contact any Director or email them at stjohnsareacommunityfund@gmail.com. We will get you an info packet and pledge card, answer questions and earn your support. Sleepy Hollow State Park offers snowshoe building workshops

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has announced that Sleepy Hollow State Park will offer several two-day snowshoe building workshops in December, January and February. Participants will learn to weave a pair of traditional wooden snowshoes similar to the ones Native Americans made for generations. Classes are designed to be fun, informative and interesting.

These handmade snowshoes can be used for hiking throughout the winter, given as gifts or used as home decoration. Snowshoeing is an easy, inexpensive way to get outside and burn some calories during the winter months.

The cost for making a pair of snowshoes is $180 and includes the pre-formed wooden frames, lacing, high-quality bindings and personal instruction. Because this is an activity that requires concentration over long periods of time, it is recommended for ages 16 and older.

The classes will be held at Sleepy Hollow State Park’s headquarters at 7835 E. Price Road in Laingsburg in Clinton County. Class size is limited to a maximum of eight participants, and reservations are required. The two-day workshops will take place:

Dec. 8-9
Friday, Dec. 8, 5 to 9 p.m. (Part 1)
Saturday, Dec. 9, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Part 2)

Future dates include: January 5-6, January 19-20, February 2-3 and February 16-17

Please note the classes are split over two days. For additional information or to make a reservation, please call Sleepy Hollow State Park at 517-651-6217 or email Denise Smith at smithd8@michigan.gov.

with an album by Maralyn Fink

‘Tis that time of the year, so I ventured out to check on the Christmas decorating. I found some very nice decorating, and it looked to be a lot of work. I urge you to pack up the family and head out to enjoy some of the great work and thought that were put into the decorations.

This brings back a lot of memories of Christmases past when the decorations were smaller in size, but then we had to work with what we had in the good ole days and we were happy with the result. A great job to all the decorators, and thank you for bringing some joy into people’s lives.

Holiday Pops coming Saturday, December 9

Mid-Michigan residents are in for a rare holiday treat when the popular Lansing Concert Band “Big Band” jazz ensemble presents their special Holiday Pops Concert. This program will take place on Saturday, December 9 starting at 7:00 p.m. in the beautiful and historic Wilson Center Auditorium.

The program entitled, “Big Band Saturday Night,” will consist of exciting swing arrangements of many holiday favorites along with jazz standards from the “Great American Songbook!”

“There are a lot of excellent big band holiday arrangements out there,” says Bill Tennant, concert host. “All the great bands and arrangers from the swing era put forth an abundance of great holiday music that is still around today. We will hear some of those wonderful tunes along with other familiar music from that great era.”

The LCB “Big Band” was formed in 1993, when several members of the Lansing Concert Band wanted a jazz performance opportunity. Trumpet player Jim Kasprzak, the band’s founder and current leader, stepped forward, giving birth to the “Big Band” to the delight of performers and listeners alike.

Several years ago the Big Band first added female vocalist Kelly Sandula-Gruner and later male vocalist Dan Templin to their personnel. These two additions opened the band up to a plethora of fine vocal arrangements, enhancing the band’s sound and repertoire.

“We’re looking forward to our St. Johns performance,” says director Kasprzak. “Performing in the Wilson Center Auditorium is a real treat with its intimate setting and great acoustics. We specifically put this show together for this one performance.”

Tickets for this special concert will be available at the door for only $10 – Adults, $5 – Seniors and Students. Children 12 and under will be admitted free. A portion of the proceeds will be going to the Wilson Center Auditorium lighting project.

Educational tour of automated Calf Feeding Facility planned

Automatic calf feeding facilities are becoming very popular in Michigan. These feeders allow calves to consume large volumes of milk in small meals throughout the day, resulting in high growth rates of pre-weaned calves. Unfortunately, there are some challenges and misperceptions that must be addressed before producers invest in this technology.

On Wednesday December 13, MSU Extension will host an educational tour at Hogan Dairy in Muir, Michigan. The Ionia county event will feature a facility tour of the 2 year old building, highlight the changes made to the heifer raising program since going to automated calf feeding, and discuss general management considerations for this type of calf raising.

Farm owner, Andrew Hogan, will highlight the planning that went into the barn, his goals, and pitfalls to avoid. There will be discussions on sanitation including a demonstration of an ATP meter to measure bacterial activity. Featured speakers include Jenna Taylor (Harvey’s Commodities), Elizabeth Marvel (Milk Specialties), Andrew Hogan (Hogan Dairy) and Faith Cullens (MSU Extension). There is no charge for this event, however RSVPs are appreciated.

December 13, 2018 1:30-3:00 at Hogan Dairy; 5931 Beahan Road, Muir, MI. RSVP to Faith Cullens at 989-224-5249 or

Happy 90th birthday to Sparrow Clinton Hospital

St. Johns recently celebrated Sparrow Clinton Hospital’s 90th birthday. Sparrow Clinton was a pioneer among rural hospitals in Michigan and was one of the first to be governed by a non-profit community corporation.

Funds to build Clinton Memorial Hospital in 1927 were raised via a public subscription campaign, with more than 1,600 Clinton County residents contributing from $1 to $10,000. The family of General Oliver Spaulding donated a portion of the land.

With construction nearly completed the hospital was dedicated on Armistice Day November 11, 1927 with the Rev. Fr. Patrick R. Dunningan as the main speaker.

Since the initial building was constructed, a number of additions have been made including a nurses’ residence in 1930 and an east wing in 1949. In the 1950s north and south wings and a separate laundry facility was added. In 1968 the Fehling Wing nearly doubled the size of the original hospital. Emergency facilities were added after the building became Sparrow Clinton Hospital.

I thanked them for their service, and all were appreciative for that. I hope you enjoy the photos.

Milk price risk management meeting announced

Market prices for milk have been on a wild ride, leaving farmers guessing about what price they will receive in the coming months. This meeting by Michigan State University Extension will help farmers understand the use of tools to manage that price movement.

Milk markets are down right now; when will they rise? Like the production and use of milk, the markets are not constant. That variation creates uncertainty, risk and opportunity.

Since August 2017, the high and low prices for the November Class III milk futures contracts have ranged almost $1.90 per hundredweight. The slide in prices took only 21 trading days as milk price tumbled from around $17.26 to $15.62. Then, it turned around and gained almost $1 back in 5 trading days a week later.

How is a dairy farmer to plan? If just 30 days ago, we looked at the markets for March 2018 Class III milk, we would have projected a price of mid $15 milk ($15.40 – 15.60) price, but since then, prices have slipped to below $15.00 as of November 8. How can one even plan ahead?

These questions will be considered at the Dairy Price Risk Management Meeting hosted by Michigan State University Extension on November 29, 2017. The meeting will be at Agro Liquid, 3055 M-21, St. Johns, MI, from 10:00 am – 2:30 pm. The objective is to enable dairy producers to become more familiar and comfortable with using price risk management tools and equip them to develop strategies for the future.

It begins with knowing your cost of milk production, presented by MSU Extension Educator, Kathy Lee. MMPA Director of Hedging and Business Development, Aaron Beak will discuss the market tools of futures and options contracts and how to use them in different situations or in combinations.

A panel of brokers, from three firms: Stewart-Peterson, Rice Dairy and FC Stone moderated by Phil Durst of MSU Extension, will talk about market outlook and strategies to employ during times like this and when markets rise.

In the afternoon, producers will work in small groups to develop market plans for 6 months and then run through some price scenarios to show the effects on prices received. Mitch Schafer of Greenstone Farm Credit Services will talk about using hedging accounts through a lender. We will also discuss the role of the milk co-ops as the intermediary in market contracts.

Registration is $30 per person or $20 for each additional person from the farm or business. Registration includes lunch and program materials. To register on-line, go to http://events.anr.msu.edu/dairypricerisk or register with a check, payable to “MSU”, sent to Huron County MSU Extension, 1142 S Van Dyke # 200, Bad Axe, MI 48413.

The commodity markets are best used as a tool to help dairy farmers manage the risk of price movement. Price risk management is not speculative, in which risky positions are taken in order to profit from the markets. Rather, dairy farmers offset the risk of price movement. The Michigan State University Extension Dairy Team has designed this program to be practical, enabling dairy farmers to develop and implement a marketing plan for their milk.

If you have questions, contact the Huron County MSU Extension at 989-269-9949 or email Marianne Buza at mbuza@msu.edu. Managing price risk is an essential tool for the dairy business in these times of low and volatile prices.

Hammer in Hand working on new Sculpture

photos by Maralyn Fink

You might think of Hammer In Hand Custom Cycles, LLC on East State Street as a custom motorcycle shop, and you would be right. But the metal artist who produced the Splash sculpture at the City Park is really up for anything.

The business was founded by Ivan Iler, Grant Iler and Michele Iler in 2009. In 2011 they were joined by Brent Hurst as a partner, bringing with him over 20 years experience in motorcycle parts sales.

“As a Michigan based artist who specializes in metal fabrication, I am particularly interested in outdoor public art,” says Ivan Iler. “The idea that people will see and interact with my work long after I’m gone inspires me more than anything else.”

Iler has many irons in the fire in terms of the media he uses, sometimes even literally iron in the fire. Sculpting, carving, engraving, metal fabrication including blacksmithing, painting, leathersmithing, drafting and mechanical design, as well as his daily work as a motorcycle engineer and fabricator keep him continually engaged.

See how he put together Splash here.

Add a green light in support of Veterans

Change one light to green in support of veterans this month. America’s veterans are some of our nation’s bravest, hardest-working men and women. However it’s hard to show them the appreciation they deserve when, back home and out of uniform, they’re more camouflaged than ever.

Greenlight A Vet is a campaign to establish visible national support for our veterans by changing one light to green. More information is available at http://www.greenlightavet.com/.
