James R. Manzullo

James R. Manzullo, 62 of Pewamo, Michigan died at Laurels of Fulton on Tuesday, February 20, 2018. Jim was born on December 1, 1955 in Alma, Michigan the son of John and Lois (Schaede) Manzullo. He graduated from Alma High School and had attended Ferris State University. Jim worked for FedEx for several years, and after his retirement from that he purchased the Kramer’s Bar and Grill in Pewamo in 2011. Jim was married to Karla Aspgren on April 22, 1978 in Grand Rapids. He loved fishing, boating and being at the cabin at Canadian Lakes.

Survivors are his wife, Karla, his father, John Manzullo of St. Louis, MI, sons Brad (Lisa) Manzullo of Okemos, Kevin Manzullo of Florida and Jonathon (Sara) Manzullo of Georgia. A memorial gathering will be held at a later date.

Judith A. Minner

Judith A. Minner, 79 of St. Johns, MI passed away on Monday, February 19, 2018 at Sparrow Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on January 23, 1939 in Detroit, MI the daughter of Joseph and Roberta (Zimmerman) Dunn. She attended Melba Cosmetology School and Lansing Community College from where she received her R.N. degree. She was married to Charles Minner who predeceased her.

Judy was worked as a cosmetologist for 10 years then as an RN for 50 years at Sparrow Clinton Hospital, was a member of Sparrow Clinton Hospital Auxiliary, Victims Support Team, Knights of Columbus Blood Drive Co-chair, was vice chairman and board member of Court Appointed Special Advocates and had been buyer and co-chair of Sparrow Clinton Gift Shop. She had also served as cashier, host and greeter at Wal-Mart for several years.

She is survived by her son, Donald Ells (Andrea), brother David (Mildred) Dunn and granddaughters, Deanna (Fred) Enos, Tanya and Victoia Ells, Great grandchildren, James II, Dylan, Alex, Sierra Wilson, Alexander Enos, Preston Reha, Daytona Enos. Great great grandchildren, Sopnia Jones, Adelina and Jaxton Wilson, Addison Enos and special friend Bonita Ells.

At Judy’s request cremation has taken place. Memorials may be directed to Capital Area Humane Society, 7095 W. Grand River Ave., Lansing, MI 48906 or St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital, PO Box 1000, Memphis, TN 38148-0142. A Memorial Mass will be prayed at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Fr. Michael Williams as celebrant with a luncheon at the church following the Mass. Arrangements by Keck-Coleman Funeral Home.


Juanita M. Horman

Juanita M. Horman, 83 of rural DeWitt passed away at Gunnisonville Assisted Living Center on Saturday, February 17, 2018. She was born on August 8, 1934 in Lansing, MI the daughter of Bronson and Donna (Locke) Hoyt. She graduated from Grand Ledge High School and on January 10, 1954 she married Charles Horman at St. Peter Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death on July 28, 2011. Juanita loved quilting, sewing, knitting, fishing, puzzles, her family and especially her grandchildren. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aide Society. Juanita was a homemaker and a farmer’s wife.

Survivors are son, Bill (Cindy) Horman of St. Johns, daughters, Debbie (Steve) Pytlowanyj of St. Johns and Rita (Jim) Jenks of Clark Lake, MI; grandchildren, Krysta Pytlowanyj, Nathan (Heather) Pytlowanyj, Steve (Anne) Pytlowanyj,Taleitha Pytlowanyj, Jacob (Jamie), and Jennifer Horman, Stacey (Pete) Kurncz, Erica (Joel) Edwards, Kimberly Downey, Lindsay Mercer and Brooke (Jason) Dunigan; 15 great grandchildren; a brother, David (Caroline) Hoyt of GA and a sister, Marietta Pung of Lansing. She was preceded in death by a great grandchild, Peter Kurncz IV, parents, brother, Donald Hoyt and sister, Nora Edgar.

Funeral services will be held at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 8990 Church Rd., St. Johns on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Quentin Nuttmann officiating. Burial will follow at St. Peter Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 21, 2018, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Memorials may be given to St. Peter Lutheran Church, or the Alzheimer’s Association.


Ronald Keith Barnhill

Ronald Keith Barnhill, age 71 of St. Johns, MI, passed away Monday, February 19, 2018 at his home.

A Memorial Service will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes Elsie, MI on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 5:00 P.M., with Pastor Mike Geiger officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday prior to the service from 2:00-5:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Ronald was born in Alma, MI on February 14, 1947 the son of Warren and Roberta (Hoffer) Barnhill. He was a graduate of Elsie High School and resided most of his life in Elsie. Ron married Ruth on September 6, 2003 at their home in St. Johns.

Ron retired from General Motors in 2006 after 37 years. He loved 50’s and 60’s rock-n-roll music. Ron enjoyed collecting a variety of memorabilia, visiting flea markets and antique malls. His favorite TV show was American Pickers. Ron and Ruth enjoyed gardening, working in the yard and around the house together. His dogs, Memphis and Daisy Mae were very special to him.

He is survived by his wife Ruth Barnhill of St. Johns, MI; son Troy Barnhill of Bath, MI; son Todd Barnhill and husband Eric Soya of Grand Rapids, MI; daughter Tricia Barnhill of Bannister, MI; son Jim Snyder of Ithaca, MI; daughter Heather Snyder of Ithaca, MI; 8 grandchildren: Jasmine Barnhill, Dakota Barnhill, Gavin Barnhill, Allie Minarik, River Minarik, Alex Crawford, Myla Rae Snyder, and Ella Mae Snyder; sister Teresa and Randy Pelley of Omaha, NE; brother Duwayne and Pam Barnhill of Garnet, MI; brother Raymond and Bev Barnhill of Ionia, MI; mother-in-law Dorothy King of Stanton, MI; sister-in-law Jamie King of Gainesville, FL; sister-in-law Kathy King of Stanton, MI; brother-in-law Steve King of Fenwick, MI; and many nieces and nephews. Ron was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law James King.

Norman John Goerge

Norman John Goerge, age 93, of Fowler, MI, passed away Sunday, February 18, 2018 at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fowler, MI, on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 10:30 A.M., with Rev. Fr. Dennis Howard officiating. Burial will take place at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery, Fowler, MI. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Goerge Chapel, Fowler, MI with a Rosary being prayed at 7:30 P.M.

Norman was born in St. Johns, MI on January 11, 1925, the son of Edward and Rose (Simon) Goerge. Norman attended Sage Country School and Most Holy Trinity Catholic School. Norman married Barbara Ogg on April 8, 1980. Besides working for different manufacturing companies, Norman retired as head of maintenance at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns. On Sunday mornings he loved visiting with his brother Alvin. He enjoyed traveling and wintering in Florida where he made many friends during his winter stays. His faith was a very important part of his life, and he was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church. For many years Norman was an avid Tigers fan. He was a lifetime resident of Fowler.

He is survived by his wife Barbara Goerge of Fowler, MI; 5 daughters: Marlene Sawdy of Grand Ledge, MI; Diane and Mike Koenigsknecht of Fowler, MI; Nancy and Dan Stoltz of The Woodlands, TX; Sharon Bressette and Fred Bednarski of Austin, TX; Jane Goerge of Saline, MI; step daughter Debbie and Pat McKenna of Haslett, MI; step son Kevin Ogg of Wyoming, MI; step daughter Carol Ann Harger of Greenville, MI; 6 grandchildren: Jason and Kelsi Sawdy, Michelle Sawdy-Rittenberg, Dan and Jenna Sawdy, Ryan and Lisa Koenigsknecht, Derek and Tricia Koenigsknecht, and Garrett Bressette; 12 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Joyce Goerge of Fowler, MI and many step grandchildren, step great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Norman was preceded in death by his parents, brother Alvin Goerge, and grandson R. Justin Allemier.

Marilyn Hazel Gallagher

Marilyn Hazel (Winsor) Gallagher, age 83 of Perrinton, MI, passed away Sunday, February 18, 2018 at her home.

Funeral Services will be held at Maple Rapids Congregational Christian Church on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 11:00 A.M., with Pastor Jerry Kissling and Pastor David Winsor officiating. Burial will take place at Payne Cemetery, Fulton Township, MI. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI, and will also be held on Thursday one hour prior to the service at the Church.

Marilyn was born in Chicago, IL on October 17, 1934 the daughter of Merrill F. and Hazel M. (Rehm) Irwin. She was a graduate of Fulton Middleton High School. Marilyn married Duane L. Winsor on June 26, 1954; Duane passed away on October 13, 1991. She then married Charles Gallagher on November 3, 1995.

Marilyn was a secretary at Fulton Schools for many years until her retirement. She loved to cross stitch, feed birds, knitting, gardening and harvesting what she grew. She was a member of Maple Rapids Congregational Christian Church. She resided most of her life in Gratiot County.

She is survived by 3 sons: Gerry and Shari Winsor of St. Johns, MI; Ron and Joyce Winsor of Chassell, MI; Brian and Jan Winsor of Perrinton, MI; daughter Deb and Matt Vusich of Perrinton, MI; 9 grandchildren: Jeremy and Jessi Winsor, David and Becky Winsor, Danielle and Matt Hutter, Autumn and Chris Lake, Erik Winsor, Chanda and Mike Shook, Casey and Maggie Williams, Hope Vusich, and John Vusich; 13 great-grandchildren; sister Carolyn and Glen Winsor of Perrinton, MI; and many nieces and nephews. Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, and daughter Janice Arlene Winsor.

Richard Russell Andrews

Richard Russell “Dick” Andrews, age 78 of Maple Rapids, MI, passed away Saturday, February 17, 2018, at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, Michigan.

A Memorial Service will be held at Maple Rapids United Methodist Church at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 with Rev. Kathy Leydorf-Keck officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10-11 A.M. prior to the service at the church.

Richard was born in Perrinton, Michigan on May 26, 1939, the son of William Russell and Ruth Marie (Stone) Andrews. Dick married Nancy Rumsey on February 24, 1957 in Maple Rapids, MI. He resided most of his life in Maple Rapids.

Dick retired from General Motors in 1996. He enjoyed hunting, especially deer hunting, fishing and anything outdoors. Dick also enjoyed playing pool playing in many tournaments over the years. He also played cards and was an avid golfer. Anything that Dick decided to do he did wholeheartedly. He was a graduate of Fulton High School and played on the football team as a quarter back, #11. Later he was a golf coach at Fulton High School. Dick was a University of Michigan fan.

He is survived by his wife Nancy Andrews of Maple Rapids, MI; 5 sons Mark Andrews of Houston, TX; Marlin Andrews of Middleton, MI; Matthew Andrews of Muskegon, MI; Michael and Tiffanie Andrews of Perrinton, MI; Mitchell and Danell Andrews of Perrinton, MI; 9 grandchildren Heather and Jason Werlinger, Kodie and Betsy Hall, Eric and Jarrae Arrington, Thomas Arrington, Matthew Arrington, Austin and Brittany Pierce, Ashlee Andrews, Zachary Andrews and Sydney Andrews; 12 great-grandchildren; brother Robert and Paula Andrews of Florida; 2 sisters Sharon Havens of Lansing, MI; Janet Andrews of Lansing, MI. Dick was preceded in death by his father and mother Ruth Marie Ellis, step-mother Leora Andrews, daughter-in-law and wife of Marlin, Angela Andrews, also his sister Sandra Gimmedy.

Camma Jill Harwood

Camma Jill Harwood died Thursday, February 15, 2018 at the age of 73. She was born April 2, 1944 in Grand Rapids, MI the daughter of the late Clayton G. and Kathryn L. (Jones) Harwood. Camma was raised in Ionia, MI and a graduate of Ionia High School, Class of 1962. She continued her education earning an Associate’s Degree in Child Development and spent her life caring for the elderly and children. Camma lived in the Flushing and Flint, MI area for several years and most recently moved to St. Johns. After retirement she participated in the foster grandparent program.

She is survived by her sisters, Kara (Johnny) Villarreal and Joy (David) Hood-Vredevoogd; nieces, Shawna Cantu and Angela (Jason) Lundstrom along with numerous cousins. The family wishes to thank Grace Haven Assisted Living staff and Care Team Hospice for their compassionate and loving care.

As per Camma’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no services. Interment will take place later this spring at Saranac Cemetery. The family was assisted with these arrangements by Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns.


Dallas Herbruck

At the age of 73, Dallas Herbruck went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 9, 2018. He graduated from Rodney B. Wilson High School in 1963.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Teresa Herbruck and daughters, Heather (David) Beach and Sara Herbruck, brothers, Douglas (Jackie) Herbruck and Darrell (Maureen) Herbruck as well as grandchildren, Mikaila and Joshua Beach. Also left to cherish his memory are nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins and many, many friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Loveoan Herbruck and brother, Daniel Herbruck.

The Memorial Service will be held February 24, 2018 at 2:00 PM at True North Community Church, 3200 Willow Street, Lansing, MI 48917 with Pastor Gary Schnepp officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service.

Kenneth W. Washburn, 53, of Lansing, MI died on February 13, 2018. He was born on May 28, 1964 in Skandia, Marquette County, MI the son of William and Sandra (Searles) Washburn. Ken worked as a carpenter for various construction companies.

Betty J. Mankey

Our mother’s gentle warm embracing light will now shine down upon all she loves from heaven. Betty (Jorae) Mankey, 94, of St. Johns, MI died peacefully on February 12, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. She was born November 18, 1923 in St. Johns the daughter of Ira and Agatha (Kesby) Jorae.

Betty was a 1941 graduate of Rodney B. Wilson High School and a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. On January 15, 1946, she married Edward Mankey in St. Johns. She was employed by Clinton National Bank, managing career and family until she retired in 1986. Betty enjoyed baking and preparing meals for any gathering that brought her family together. For many years, Betty and Ed spent winters in Florida where they enjoyed time with many friends and family.

She is survived by her children, Janice and Sandra Mankey both of St. Johns, Carol and Thomas Kaminski of Kalkaska, Gary and June Mankey of Lansing; two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Ryan Feyer and Sarah and Jesse Sherman, and her preciously loved great-grandchildren, Andrew, Molly, and Kinsley. She is also survived by a brother, Bernard and Joan Jorae of St. Johns, sisters-in-law Lillian Jorae of St. Johns and Glenna Mankey of Conway, Arkansas and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward, brother, Roger Jorae, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ronald and Bernadine Henning, Bernard and Agatha Mankey, Elmer and Marcella Feldpausch, and Donald Mankey.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM Friday, February 16, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church 109 Linden, St. Johns with Rev. Fr. Douglas Osborn as Celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns. A Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the St. Joseph Educational Trust Fund.


Richard Francis Gorch

Richard Francis “Rick” Gorch, age 70, of St. Johns, MI, passed away Saturday, February 10, 2018, at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, MI.

A Memorial Service will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI on Wednesday, February 14, 2018at 2:00 P.M., with Pastor Tyler Barlage officiating. A Memorial Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 12:00-2:00 P.M. prior to the service at the funeral home. A private burial will take place at Eureka Cemetery, Eureka, MI at a later date.

Richard was born in Manistee, MI on February 6, 1948 the son of Aloysius and Christine (Kadzban) Gorch. Rick married Carole Bowerman on April 26, 1969. Carole passed away on December 9, 2000. Rick resided most of his life in Manistee, where he was born and St. Johns.

Rick retired from General Motors as a Supervisor. He loved to ride his Harley Davidson Motorcyles and enjoyed snowmobiling. Rick also enjoyed boating and spending time at the cottage on Manistee Lake. He loved spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his son Brian Gorch of Highland Twp, MI; granddaughter Ellana Gorch of Grand Ledge, MI; sister Antoinette “Toni” Gorch of Brethren, MI; brother Joel Gorch of DeWitt, MI. Rick was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his son Paul Gorch on May 24, 2017, brother Patrick Gorch and sister Leanne Gorch.

Robert Buehler

On February 1st, the world lost a great man. Robert (Bob) James Buehler, 77, of Minnetonka Minnesota died peacefully at Methodist Hospital surrounded by his wife and four daughters. Bob was a native of St. Johns, Michigan.

He created a large (and loud) family and taught us how to take care of each other, tease each other, and love each other unconditionally. He inspired us by his will to be with us as long as his body would allow.

Bob leaves behind his loving wife of 57 years, Shirley (Tait), four daughters, Sheri (Bill), Lori (Nate), Kristin (Mark) and Amanda (Dan), 11 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, his brother Paul Buehler (Joyce), a host of hunting buddies from deer camp, his loving dialysis care givers at home and away, his faithful golden retriever, Brandi, and many, many friends.

We will truly miss his enduring love, endless support, and sense of humor.

His memorial service will be held on February 24, 2018 at Messiah Church, 17805 County Road 6, Plymouth MN, at 12 noon. Family will meet and greet at the church at 11 am and a luncheon will follow the service.

A Manistee River (his happy place) celebration will be planned for this summer. Details to follow.

James T. Skriba

James T. Skriba, 82 of St. Johns passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, February 6, 2018. He was born on March 11, 1935 in Ashley, MI the son of Rudolph and Ruby (Morse) Skriba. Jim graduated from Ashley High School and served in the U.S. Army. On January 25, 1958 he married Virginia L. Harris in St. Johns and he worked at General Motors for 32 years in material handling and in the powerhouse from which he retired. Jim loved electronics, work, fixing things and his Sheltie dogs. He owned and operated Jim’s TV North of St. Johns for several years.

Survivors are his wife, Virginia, sons Kelly (Debra) Skriba of Okemos and Jeff (Shelly) Skriba of Caledonia, MI; grandchildren, Jessica, Joshua and Mitch and brother, William Skriba of Ashley. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Mike Skriba and a sister, Janet Foote.

The family will receive friends and relatives at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home on Thursday, February 8, 2018, 4-8 P.M. and from 10-11A.M. Friday. Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday with Pastor Jeff Reser officiating. Burial will be at Eureka Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Ingham County Humane Society or American Diabetes Association.


Barry L. Knight

Dr. Barry L. Knight, 76, of Howell, MI and Ft. Myers FL, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2018. Barry was born in St. Johns, MI to William and Audra (Hettler) Knight. He was the oldest their four sons. He was a long time resident of Marquette, MI.

Barry is survived by his loving wife, Karen, formerly Pohl, who was his high-school sweetheart and soul mate. They were married on January 7, 1961 and recently celebrated their 57th anniversary. He is also survived by his daughter Susan (Jon) Maninga of Ypsilanti, MI, and his sons, Michael (Janet) Knight of Grosse Pointe Farms, MI and Eric (Pamela) Knight of Howell, MI; his granddaughters, Katelyn Maninga (fiancé, Nick Gregg), Amanda Maninga, Ella Knight and Maisie Knight; a special cousin-in-law, Judy (Fox) Leftwitch; his brothers, Nick (Cheryl Coleman) Knight and Scott (Cindy) Knight, and many loved nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, and in-laws, Herman J. and Genevieve Pohl.

Barry earned a B.A. in history and a teaching certificate at Michigan State University. Then he was granted a National Defense Fellowship in Humanities which enabled him to purse a Master’s degree followed by a Ph.D. in history also at MSU. After graduating, he began his life-long career in 1967 at Northern Michigan University, Marquette, MI. He enjoyed 37 years as a professor and also served many years as the head of the history and philosophy departments. He spent time researching at the State Department in Washington, D.C. and at Columbia University in New York. His work involved the U.S.-China relations of the 20th century. He was a member of St. Peter Cathedral, Marquette, MI and served as president of the parish council. He was a member of St. Patrick Church in Brighton at the time of his death. Barry enjoyed lifelong learning, reading, teaching, playing tennis and racquetball, walking the beach, puttering around the house and especially spending time with his family.

So loved by his family, students, colleagues, and friends, he will be dearly remembered and missed by all.

Donald C. “Donnie” Rice age 80, of Maple Rapids, MI passed away Sunday, February 4, 2018 at Laurels of Carson City, Carson City, MI.

Don was born in Lansing, MI on February 12, 1937, the son of Donald W. and Bernice (Hettler) Rice. He graduated from Rodney B. Wilson High School, St. Johns, MI with the class of 1954. Don married Gladys M. Witgen on August 13, 1955 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fowler, MI.

Don was raised on Valley Side Dairy Farms on DeWitt Rd. in St. Johns, a retail dairy that delivered milk to homes in the surrounding area. He spent 23 years in retail management and owned Montgomery Wards for 6 years. Don lived most of his life in Clinton County, but also spent 16 years in Gaylord and worked with his greatest passion as an electronic system analyst. In retirement he moved back to Clinton County where he always considered home. Don’s greatest love was his role as husband, father and grandfather. Don was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church St. Johns, MI.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gladys Rice of Maple Rapids, son Michael and Pam Rice of St. Johns, daughter Cheryl and Gary Onstad of Howell, 3 grandchildren: Kassi Rice, Eric Onstad and Chelsea Onstad; 2 brothers-in-law: Louis Powell and Robert Armbrustmacher, and sister-in-law Joan Epkey. Don was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Judith Rademacher Carter, in-laws: Marvin (Ruth) Witgen, Bernard (Agatha) Mankey, Claude (Evelyn) Wieber, Richard Schaefer, Vern Pung, and Louis Epkey; and two sisters-in-law: Marie Powell and Alma Armbrustmacher.

Linda Fay Snater

Linda Fay (Gilbert) Snater, 59, of St. Johns, passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2018. Linda was born in Frankfort, Michigan on June 11, 1958 to Gerald (Jean) Gilbert and Nancy Morgret. Linda married Jeff Snater on January 13, 1979 and he survives her.

Linda also leaves behind her son Art and daughter Amber, and her fur babies (grand dogs), Tyke, Lee, and Molly Mae; parents, Gerald and Jean Gilbert and Nancy Morgret; siblings, Deb Loudenbeck (Ken Bradley), Donna (Jim) Beaudrie, Laurie (Mick) Becker, Glenn (Shannon) Gilbert; her mother-in-law, Julaine Snater; brothers and sisters-in-law, Julie (Kevin) Garvey, John (DeeDee) Snater, Janice (Bill) Wing, Jerry (Rose) Snater, Jody (Kendra) Snater. Linda loved her many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and they adored their Aunt Linda. She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Arthur Snater and niece, Krista Garvey.

Linda enjoyed having cocktails on their front porch with family and friends, gardening, canning, day trips to the casino, wine tasting, and spending time with her babies. Through the Gift of Life she was able to help cleft lip and burn patients and others in need of tissue.

Arlene L. Plowman of St. Johns, MI who celebrated her 92nd birthday on January 31, 2018 passed away on February 2, 2018 at Hazel Findlay Country Manor. Arlene was born the daughter of John and Auerilia Baur Baumgartner in Bingham Twp., MI. She worked in retail sales for several years and on September 2, 1950 she married Glen Plowman in St. Johns, MI. She enjoyed knitting and quilting.

Surviving are her husband, Glen, daughter Gwen Plowman of St. Johns, son James (Deborah) Plowman of Ovid and daughter Linda Bryant of St. Johns; grandsons Eric (Mary) , Nick and Adam (Alissa) Plowman 2 great grandchildren, Molly and Abigail Plowman and sisters, Delores Johnson of Florida and Pat Marton of St. Johns. She was preceded in death by sisters, Helen, Shirley and Dorothy Berlin and brother Carl Baumgartner.

Maxine L. Kushmaul

Maxine L. Kushmaul died Monday, January 29, 2018 at the age of 91. She was born December 17, 1926 in Grass Lake, MI the daughter of Lawrence and Verda Lucille (McCurdy) DeVerna. On December 23, 1945 she married Robert E. Kushmaul and he preceded her in death in 1994. Maxine was an active member in several churches during her life. She was a member of Federated Church in Grass Lake and of First United Methodist Church in Chelsea.

Surviving is a son, William (Kathy) Kushmaul of St. Johns; four grandchildren, Roxanne (Dave) Kudwa, Nick (Jen) McCalla, Bob(Colleen)Kushmaul, Case (Amy) McCalla and eleven great grandchildren, Noah, Luke, Olivia, and Anaya Kudwa, Alyssa and Jacob McCalla, Connor and Tyson Kushmaul, and Emily, Megan, and Will McCalla. She was predeceased by her husband, two brothers, three sisters, a daughter, Grace McCalla, and a son Robert Jr. who was a 1969 casualty of the Vietnam War.

More recently, she was a member of First Congregational Church in St. Johns. For many years she worked alongside her husband as the office manager for Washtenaw Crop Service in Ann Arbor, MI. Maxine was a former member of the American Business Women’s Association. She actively supported her children in 4H, and in her retirement enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and later, spoiling her great-grandchildren. She was a volunteer for St. Johns Schools at Oakview South Elementary where she spent her time helping and playing with Kindergartners, who all called her GG. She was also a member of the Sparrow Clinton Hospital Auxiliary. Maxine enjoyed traveling, knitting, and working crossword puzzles.

A memorial service will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns with Pastor Andy Croel officiating. Richard Dean Wells

The Honorable Richard Dean Wells died surrounded by his loving family on January 28, 2018 at the age of 76.

Dick is survived by his wife Nancy; son Brandy and wife Susan of Ada, Michigan, daughter Mindi of Okemos, Michigan and son Corey and wife Jody of Howell, Michigan; and 7 beautiful grandchildren.

Dick was born on May 31, 1941 in Three Rivers, Michigan. He graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Pre-Law in 1963. He married Nancy Kay Baker of Three Rivers on August 31, 1963 and then completed a Doctorate of Law from Wayne State University in 1966. He joined the Prosecuting Attorney’s office of Kent County in the same year. In 1968 the two moved to St Johns, Michigan where he began his private law practice. Over the next 25 years, they welcomed 3 beautiful children. In 1993 he was appointed to the Clinton County District Judge position by Governor John Engler, where he presided until his retirement in 2014.

Dick was a member of the State of Michigan Bar Association for 50 years. He held positions on the boards at the Rotary Club of St. Johns, Clinton Bank and Trust, Clinton Memorial Hospital, St. Johns Lutheran Church and The Clinton County Bar Association. He will forever be remembered for his generous spirit, his firm and unyielding sense of fairness, his high moral character and his utmost loyalty to family and friends. Dick, Rich, Papa, Dad, Friend – he will be forever in our hearts.

A funeral is scheduled for Friday, February 2nd at 11:00am at the Keck-Coleman Funeral Home in St. Johns. Visitation hours will be Wednesday, January 31st from 4:00pm – 7:00pm and Thursday, February 1st from 5:00pm – 8:00pm. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Dick’s life. Dorothy J. Sousley

Dorothy J. Sousley died Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at the age of 88. She was born October 2, 1929 in St. Johns the daughter of L. Russell and Emily A. (Hoelzer) Steffens. Dorothy graduated from Rodney B. Wilson High School in St. Johns, Class of 1947. Dorothy was an active, lifelong member of First Congregational Church in St. Johns where she was a member of the church choir, was a member of the Doublets group at church and along with her husband was instrumental in starting the Stevens Ministry at the church.

On July 9, 1950 she married Howard Sousley and when he was drafted into the Army, Dorothy followed him to Fort Jackson, SC where she worked in the motor pool on the base. Upon returning to Michigan, she was the Conference Desk Manager at the Kellogg Center on the campus of Michigan State University while Howard was attending MSU and that is when she became an avid Spartan fan enjoying hockey, football and basketball. Dorothy was proud to be a stay at home mom taking care of her home and raising her family.

Surviving is her husband of 67 years, Howard; two children, Sandra (William) Buyak of Dimondale and Scott (Rhonda) Sousley of Rochester Hills; three grandchildren, Benjamin (Heather) Buyak, Bailey Buyak and Evan Howard Sousley; a great grandson, William Buyak and a sister-in-law, Susan Steffens of DeWitt. She was preceded in death by a brother, L. Richard Steffens.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, January 29, 2018 at First Congregational Church 100 Maple Street, St. Johns with Rev. Matthew Olson officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Gladys Elaine Boak

Gladys Elaine Boak, born January 19, 1930 in Township of Riley, Michigan, died December 8, 2017, in Tucson, AZ. She retired from TUSD Food Services. She was a member of Fountain of Life Lutheran Church, Ascension Lutheran Church, Tucson Elks and Moose Lodges, Eastern Star Masonic Lodge, Retreads of Arizona Motorcycle Club.

She is survived by sons Gale (Lore) Boak and Gary (Millie) Boak and son-in-law Robert Jackson, grandchildren Jodie (John) Cunningham, Jeffrey Boak, Joshua (Marissa) Boak, Jamie and Jaycie Boak, and great-grand daughter Layla and many nieces and nephews. Mark Black, age 59 of Owosso passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at Memorial Healthcare with his family by his side. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, January 27 2018 at Nelson-House Funeral Homes-Owosso Chapel. Per Mark’s request, cremation has taken place. Mark was born January 12, 1959 in St. Johns, the son of William Black and Arvilla Robinson (Black). When Mark was 6 yrs old his mother married Phillip Newton who raised Mark as his own. He had a love for being a biker, was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He had a fondness for Snowy days. Most of all Mark looked forward to time with his family, friends and especially loved his grandchildren. Mark was employed through the years at Becker, Lear Corp in Elsie and Demmer Corp in Lansing.

Shirley Ann Dockham

Shirley Ann Dockham, 81, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 15, 2018 in Lansing, Michigan. Born January 19, 1936 to Gordon and Ruth (Carey) Hodge, Shirley grew up in St. Johns. She was an Avon Rep for many years and worked as a clerk for the USPS in Lansing. In her spare time she loved to bowl and participated in many leagues.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 39 years, Harold, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Richard Hodge, Dorothy Southwell, and Betty Cecyle Brown.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, January 19, 2018 at 11:00am at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, Lansing Chapel, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing. Janet C. Lewis died Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at the age of 82. She was born September 17, 1935 in St. Johns, MI the daughter of Francis and Marian (Motz) Sohn. On June 27, 1953 she married Leon Lewis and he survives her.

Also surviving are her children, Jim (Hilda) Lewis of St. Johns, Cindy Hoffer of Alma, Greg (Renee) Lewis of St. Johns, Gary Lewis of Elsie and Brian (Helen) Lewis of Owosso; twelve grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; one great great grandchild and a brother-in-law, Herbert Pasch. She was preceded in death by her sister, Patricia Pasch.

Erwin E. Pline, age 90 passed away on Monday, January 15, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on August 20, 1927 in Lansing the son of Herman and Lillian (Miller) Pline and was raised in Westphalia. He worked for Holloway Construction Company, retiring in 1987. On January 17, 1953 he married Alice Kramer. He was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Laborers Local #1191, Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Foresters, Fowler Conservation Club and VFW Post 3733 Auxiliary.

Survivors include his wife Alice, children Deborah (Stanley) Feldpausch, Marcia (Dean) Feldpausch, John (Teresa) Pline and Richard (Trina) Pline all of Fowler. Grandchildren, Ashley, Trent, Kendall, Gwen, Laura, Michelle, Bobbi Jo, John, Mason, Carter, Danielle and Derrick. There are 21 great grandchildren. Siblings, Arlene Thelen, Louis (Ellen) Pline, Germaine (Gordon) French, Gladys Rademacher and Roger (Ruth) Pline. He was preceded in death his parents, brothers-in-law, Hilary Thelen and James Rademacher.

The family will receive friends and relatives at Most Holy Trinity Activity Center in Fowler on Wednesday, January 17, 2018, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 P.M. Wednesday evening. Larry Steven Baird

Larry Steven Baird, 66, of The Villages, FL passed away January 8, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Larry was born in Lansing, Michigan on November 14, 1951. Larry was a graduate of Mason High School and Michigan State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. Larry married the love of his life, Denise (Shinaver) Baird on August 11, 1973. Together they enjoyed traveling, camping, golfing, bowling, and spending time with their grand-daughters.

Larry began his teaching career in Indiana, at Whitko High School. In 1977, Larry began teaching at DeWitt High School in DeWitt, Michigan, where he taught math and coached for the next 29 years. Larry was active in the teachers union, often advocating for his fellow educators. He coached football, baseball, and volleyball, but his true coaching passion was softball. In 1981, he co-founded the Michigan High School Softball Association. In 1990 he was voted the National High School Athletic Coaches Association, Coach of the Year. In 1999, Larry was voted into the Michigan High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame. Upon his retirement, in 2007, he was ranked 13th nationally among high school softball coaches, with over 700 wins to his name.

Larry is survived by his wife of 44 years, his daughter Erin (Baird) Baker and son-in-law Chuck of Northville, MI, his son Kyle and daughter-in-law Trisha (Hines) Baird of Milwaukee, WI and his three grand-daughters Madilynn, Katelynn, and Ellynn Baker. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard F. Baird and Edna B. (Clark) Baird, and his brother Richard A. Baird all of Mason, Michigan.

Nick G. Evers, 49 of rural St. Johns, MI passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2018 from a snowmobile accident on Manistee Lake, in Kalkaska. Nick was born on April 28, 1968 in Cincinnati, OH the son of Dan and Mary Nell (Carroll) Evers. He worked as a mechanic for CBRE in Lansing . On December 19, 2008 he married Sandy Doellman in Rising Sun, IN. Nick loved being outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, cross country skiing and snowmobiling.

He is survived by his wife Sandra, parents Dan and Mary Evers of Cincinnati, brothers Dan and Mike Evers of Cincinnati, and his faithful companions, his dogs Laddie and Nikki.

Raynold P. St. Pierre

Raynold P. St. Pierre, 76, of rural St. Johns, MI passed away on January 12, 2018 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. He was born on August 19, 1941 in Lansing, MI the son of Phillip A. and Dorothy L. (Blias) St. Pierre. He was a veteran of the US Air Force and married for over 50 years to Barbara J. Bonczak. Raynold worked as the Planning, Zoning and Building Administration for DeWitt Township for 34 years and developed the first zoning ordinance for DeWitt Township.

He is survived by his wife Barbara, sons Marc D. St. Pierre of Saginaw and Eric C. St. Pierre of Colorado Springs. 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Brothers Norman L., Richard E. and Jeffrey A. St. Pierre. He was preceded in death by daughter Gabrielle and 1 grandson, Hayden. Memorial contributions may be given to The American Cancer Socity.

A memorial mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. with Rev. Fr. Michael Williams as celebrant. Arrangements were made by Keck-Coleman Funeral Home.


Melinda K. Joy

Melinda K. Joy died Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at the age of 50. She was born March 9, 1967 in Lansing, MI the daughter of Richard and Linda Kay (Ellis) Roberts. Melinda earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Spring Arbor College and worked as an X-ray technician and most recently as a home health caregiver.

Surviving are two sons, Ryan (Alyssa Zoll) Joy of Lansing and Eli Joy of DeWitt; parents, Linda Kay (Jack) Nelson of St. Johns; brother, Jeremy (Kimberly) Nelson (nieces Rachel and Leah) and sister, Shiloh (Brent) Kramer (Nephew Isaac) all of Portland; her grandfather, Ira “Butch” Roberts and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandmother Elizabeth Roberts and her father Richard who is MIA from the Vietnam War.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, January 15, 2018 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns with Pastor Andy Croel officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home. Barbara R. (Moinet) Viges, 89 passed away on January 11, 2018 at her home surrounded with family. She was born on February 29, 1928 in Clinton County, MI the daughter of Lyle and Edith (Eastman) Green. Barbara worked for Karber Block Company doing accounting work and then she worked at Federal Mogul Corp. She was married to Norman Moinet in 1946 and he passed away in 1997. In 2006 she married Walter Viges, and he passed away in 2016. Barbara enjoyed her family, grandchildren and traveling.

Surviving her are her children, Karen (Ted) Bedell of St. Johns, Norman (Sharon) Moinet of St. Johns, Michael (Brenda) Moinet of Ithaca, Robert (Leanette) Moinet of St. Johns, James (Elaina) Moinet of Kentucky and Dana (Vickie) Viges of Holt, MI. 22 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Carol Ann Murphy, age 70, of St. Johns, MI passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, MI.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2018 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI with a Vigil and Rosary Service at 7:00 P.M.

Carol was born in Flint, MI on March 31, 1947 the daughter of Edward and Josephine (Rynca) Urbanowski. She graduated from Birch Run High School with the class of 1966. Carol was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns.

Carol had a passion for children with disabilities and was always an advocate for their well-being. She was a paraprofessional with the Clinton County RESA for 17 years, retiring in 2016. Prior to that time, she was active as a sub and volunteer for many years working with children with disabilities. Carol was a volunteer in the Handicapped Horseback Riding Program for over 10 years. She loved flowers and gardening. Carol also enjoyed traveling and vacationing around Michigan.

Carol is survived by her daughter Diana Murphy of Alma and son William Murphy Jr. of East Lansing. She is also survived by her sisters: Mary (David) Thamm of Birch Run, Theresa Fowler of Clio, Judy (Francis) Laurin of Houghton Lake; brothers: John (Debby) Urbanowski of Birch Run, and Ed Urbanowski of Birch Run; and many nieces and nephews. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, brother Joseph Urbanowski, and sister Gloria Urbanowski.

Patricia J. Zimmerman

Patricia J. Zimmerman of St. Johns passed away Sunday January 7, 2018 at the age of 77, very much loved and surrounded by her caring family. Pat was born February 15, 1940 in St. Johns Michigan to Theodore and Sophie (Prorok) Moore. She was a 1958 graduate of Rodney B. Wilson High School and worked as an Administrative Assistant for over 40 years with The United Nations and later with FEMA. Pat enjoyed baking, traveling, and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, family was very important to Pat.

Surviving are her children; daughter Heather (Dave) Kingsbury, and sons Brad (Georgeanne) Zimmerman and Chris Zimmerman; ten grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, her brothers; Bob (Martha) Moore and Roger (Alice) Moore, sisters in law Nancy Moore and Mary Moore, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Pat was preceded in death by her son Eric Zimmerman, her parents and brothers Wayne Moore and Larry Moore.

Per Pat’s wishes a private burial will take place with a time to gather and celebrate her life taking place in the spring. Donations may be made in Pat’s name to Alzheimer’s Research. The family was assisted with these arrangements by Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns, Michigan.


Thomas William Beechler

Thomas William Beechler, age 80, died Monday January 8, 2018 after a short illness. He was born August 16, 1937 to William “Bill” Beecher and Geraldine Beechler who owned and operated the Clinton Theater for many many years. He graduated from St. Johns High School in 1955. He was a supervisor at Federal Mogul, retiring in 1991. Tom was a veteran of the United States Army and loved his family, basketball and Michigan with a passion. He will be dearly missed but not forgotten.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years Carol Ricker Beechler, children Robin Beechler Ball (spouse Steven Ball Sr), Scott Beechler (spouse Karen Beechler ), Rhonda Beechler Link, Grandchildren Shelli Stevens Sayers (spouse Andy Sayers), Thomas Edward Stevens (spouse Jennifer Stevens), Matthew Beechler, Karli Beechler, Joseph Link, Samantha Link, Hannah Link, great granddaughters Lilyan Sayers and Virginia Sayers. He is also survived by his sisters Jan Workman (spouse Wendel Workman) and Chris Beechler Cobb; Brother in law Jon Ricker and sister in law Jacqueline Ricker Dollar and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and brother in law Ron Cobb.

Gene D. Pederson, age 62 of Lake Isabella, MI, passed away Saturday, December 2, 2017 at Sparrow Health Systems, Lansing, MI.

A Memorial Service will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI, at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, January 20, 2018, with Mr. Marc Hufnagel officiating. Gene was born in St. Johns, Michigan on November 1, 1955, the son of C. Lee and Sue Ann (Eaton) Pederson. He graduated from St. Johns High School with the class of 1974. He went on to attend Central Michigan University, Mt. Pleasant, MI. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and time spent outdoors. He lived at Lake Isabella for 30 years and loved his time spent there. He was very social and was dedicated to his family and extended family. He was an avid University of Michigan, Redwings, and Detroit Lions Fan. Gene worked many years at Godwin’s Furniture and Chippewa Beverage, both in Mt. Pleasant, MI. Gene was a member of Pheasants Forever, Isabella Chapter.

He is survived by his daughter Sarah Messer and brother Roy and Diane Pederson. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ryan G. Martin

Ryan G. Martin, 31, of Potterville died Wednesday, January 3, 2018. He was born on June 2, 1986 in Carson City, Michigan to Marilyn Martin Kieffer. After her death in 1989, he was adopted by his aunt and uncle, Jack and Jean Martin. He graduated from St. Johns High School and entered the U.S. Army where he was deployed to Iraq. Following his military service Ryan worked as a security guard. He married Megan Foster on July 6, 2012. At the time of his death Ryan was employed by the State of Michigan in the IT Department. He was a firefighter in Potterville and had just been elected to the Potterville City Council.

Ryan is survived by his wife, Megan; 3 brothers, Kyle, David and T.J. (Carrie) Martin.; 3 sisters, Eunice (David) Link, Aleisha (Pat) Leavitt and Kateri (Andy) Konik; his parents Jack and Jean Martin of Alpena, his father and mother-in-law, Wayne and Joy Foster of Potterville, an aunt, Dell Martin and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Gerald and Geraldine Martin and J.D and Mariam Robinson, his uncles Kurt and James Martin, his aunt Joanne Miller and his child, Baby Martin.

Cecil Lloyd Berlin Jr.

Cecil Lloyd Berlin Jr., age 67, of St. Johns, MI passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, MI.

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI, on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 2:00 P.M., with Pastor Mona Kindel officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 12:00-2:00 P.M. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Cecil was born in Jackson, MI on August 24, 1950 the son of Cecil Lloyd and Dorothy Jean (Baumgartner) Berlin. He was a graduate of St. Johns High School and resided most of his life in Shiawassee and Clinton Counties. Cecil married Heidi on May 15, 2002 in Corunna, MI.

Cecil had an Alpaca farm, called Maple River Alpacas. He liked prospecting for gold and enjoyed his time at the river doing this. He loved the outdoors, camping in the Upper Peninsula and just enjoyed nature. Cecil loved and was an avid gardener. He donated his time at the Salvation Army Food Pantry in St. Johns. But most of all spending time with his family was the most important to him.

He is survived by his wife Heidi Berlin of St. Johns, MI; 2 daughters: Theresa and Steve Johnson of Manistee, MI; Amanda Berlin of Laingsburg, MI; son Lloyd and Angel Berlin of Brownsville, CA; step-daughter Melanie Craner of Holt, MI; step-son Dale Craner of Laingsburg, MI; 3 grandchildren: Rebecca Berlin, John Berlin and Rachell Craner; and 2 great-grandchildren: Alaena and Keegan Davis. Cecil was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters: Alice Jackson and Carolyn Beach, and his brother-in-law Roger Beach.

Gloria Rose Abbey

Gloria Rose Abbey, our precious child, was called to be with the angels in heaven, December 30, 2017 at the age of 9. Gloria was born October 18, 2008 to Dustin Abbey and Erica Southwell. Even though Gloria was a special needs child, memories of her 9 years will be forever cherished by those that she came in contact with. One outstanding memory will be her random smiles which would tug at your heart. Gloria touched the hearts of many, including the staff at Clinton County RESA, as well as her bus drivers. She will be tremendously missed by all who knew her.

Along with her parents, Gloria is survived by her sister Grace Abbey, halfbrothers, Dante Kahalehau, Casey and Jack Morence, all of St. Johns, half sisters Brooklyn and Scarlet Morence; grandparents Lloyd and Brenda Abbey of Lansing, Jim and Connie Southwell of St. Johns, great grandmother Wilma Schmitz of Westphalia, as well as several aunts and uncles and numerous cousins.

Donald E. Welch

It is with great sadness that the family of Donald E. “Sparty” Welch, 73 of St. Johns, MI announces his passing on January 2, 2018 due to complications during surgery at University of Michigan Hospital. Don was born on November 4, 1944 in Midland, MI the son of Basil E. and Dorotha (Murra) Welch. He graduated from Blanchard High School and had attended Michigan State University.

Don owned and operated D.E. Welch Plumbing and Heating for several years and then worked for the State of Michigan, Fire Marshall Division as a mechanical contractor from where he retired. Don was an avid hunter and fisherman, loved the MSU Spartans, golfing, playing cards and watching his granddaughters play softball.

On July 24, 1965 he married the love of his life, Eileen J. Bennett in Remus, MI. He was the loving father of son Gregory (Katrina) Welch of Lansing and daughter Karri Welch of Portland, proud grandfather “Poppi” to Hunter and Paige, brother to Reita Miller of Sheridan and “Sparty” to many others. Don will be remembered by everyone who met him for his unique ability to listen, ask questions and give advice with quiet, measured wisdom.

The family will receive friends and relatives at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 9, 2018, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A celebration of Don’s life will be held on May 26, 2018. Linda L. Taylor

Linda L. (Baker) Taylor, born July 4th, 1937 in Bannister, the daughter of the late Dale and Marian (Hicks) Baker, passed away December 21, 2017 at the age of 80 due to complications of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Mom was an ardent gardener. She loved growing and tending to her flowers. She enjoyed beautifying her surroundings, both indoors and out.

She is survived by 3 sons, Richard Bramer, Dan (Sue) Bramer, and Rob (Christine) Bramer. She was a loving grandmother to 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Little sister to her brother Allan, and big sister to brothers Guy, Mitchell, Robin, Jeff, and sister Bonnie.

She was proceeded in death by her parents and 2 sons, Brett Bramer and Clint Taylor.

A service will be held at 11:00 a.m., February 10th, 2018 at the Maple Rapids United Methodist Church, 330 S. Maple St, Maple Rapids, MI. A luncheon will be hosted at the church, following the service.

Should friends desire, contributions may be made to the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund or any charity of their choice.

Michael F. Johnson, 62 passed away on December 31, 2017 at Hospice House of Mid Michigan. He was born on March 26, 1955 in Detroit, MI the son of Burton and Margaret (Phelps) Johnson.

He is survived by brothers, William Johnson, Dr. Matthew (Pam) Johnson and sister Laura (Joseph Sr.) Mullaney. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Mary Johnson and Alice (Simpson) Johnson, brother Larry Zimba. He has 25 nieces and nephews and was a realtor with REMAX Finest in St. Johns.

Mary E. Johnson

Mary E. Johnson, 68 passed away on December 31, 2017 at Gunnisonville Assisted Living Center. She was born on June 9, 1949 in Detroit, MI the daughter of Burton and Margaret (Phelps) Johnson, and she is survived by her daughter Maureen Clark and a grandson, Shawn Matthew Clark, brothers, William Johnson, Dr. Matthew (Pam) Johnson and sister Laura (Joseph Sr.) Mullaney. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Alice (Simpson) Johnson, brother Larry Zimba and Michael Johnson. She has 23 nieces and nephews and was a registered nurse. Mary had worked as a hospice nurse for many years and retired from that.

Alan Derrell Steavens

Alan Derrell Steavens, 80, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2017 as a result of progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Alan served over 7 years in the Air Force and was dedicated to helping other throughout is life.

Alan was the last of the four Steavens brothers who were born and raised in St. Johns. His brothers were Norris, Donald, and David. Many family members in and around St Johns grieve for the loss of Alan at this time.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Vandalee (McClintock) Steavens, his sister and brother in-law Roy and Eileen Witgen, his cousins, the Barnheart Family, his three children and their spouses: Greg and Margret Steavens of Taylor, MI, Gwendolin and Thomas Schornak of Grand Ledge and Glenn and Lori Steavens of Lincoln Park, MI.

In addition to their biological children above, Alan and Vandalee took in many children into their home and heart over the years to cared for them as their own children. Some were biologically related and others not at all; it made no difference to Alan and Vandalee. Some of these children lived with Alan and Vandalee their entire lives and some for several years, all of them where family to Alan and Vandalee who referred to them as their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Alan is survived by 20 grandchildren and 9 great grand children, who are all heartbroken from the loss.

Charles Chapko, Sr.

Charles “Charlie” Chapko Sr., loving husband, father and grandfather, Charles “Charlie” Chapko Sr., age 86, of Elsie, MI, went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 1, 2018. He will be greatly missed.

A Rosary will be prayed Thursday evening at 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Charlie was born and raised on a farm in Ashley, MI on October 31, 1931, the son of Stephen and Elizabeth (Skriba) Chapko. Charlie was a gentle, loving and quiet man with a fun sense of humor and was a good listener. He was a member of St. Cyril’s Catholic Church in Bannister, MI. He served in the United States Army from 1954-1956 and was stationed in Nuremberg, Germany. He worked at Elsie Machine Company alongside his brothers Tony, Steve and Frank for many years. He was a huge Detroit Tigers fan and had fulfilled his dream two years ago by attending several spring training games while on vacation in Florida. He also loved to play the accordion, listen to polka music, attend polka dances, fish on summer vacations in the Upper Peninsula and go to the casino now and then. However, his greatest joy in life was spending time with his wife, family and friends.

He married his second wife and best friend Micky Chapko of Elsie, MI on May 30, 2015 and she survives him along with his daughter Christine (Dwight) Boak, St. Johns, MI; son Charles (Carrie Ann) Chapko, St. Johns, MI; son in law Richard Villarreal, St. Johns, MI; grandchildren: Michael (Brittany) Villarreal, Rachel and Matthew Boak, Charles and Christian Chapko, great grandson Gavin Villarreal, step children: Elaine (Jon) Bartholic, Ovid, MI; Marcia (Ken) Pangborn, Elsie, MI; John (Lisa) Chapko, Elsie, MI; Frank (Yolanda) Chapko, Elsie, MI; Lori (Jim) Porubsky, Bannister, MI; Jeff (Camie) Chapko, Elsie, MI; Michelle Bisson, East Jordan, MI; Tamara Bodine-Wilson, Coto De Caza, CA; and Tim (Tammy) Chapko, Atlanta, GA; along with many step grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is also survived by 2 sisters: Mary (Stan) Divish and Margaret Chovance, and sisters in law: Rose Chapko, Mildred Chapko and Angela (Howard) Clevenger. Brigida E. Sible

Brigida E. Sible, 52 of St. Johns, MI passed away at Hospice House in Lansing on Saturday, December 30, 2017. She was born on July 22, 1965 in Lansing the daughter of Joe and Dora (Riojas) Cordova. She graduated from St. Johns Public Schools in 1983 and worked at Turning Point for 15 years. On January 28, 2000 she married Jonathan J. Sible in Lansing, MI. Brigida loved cheerleading, dancing, being with family and cooking Mexican food.

She is survived by her husband, Jonathan, daughter Gabriella and son Jeremiah both at home; her Mother, Dora Cordova of St. Johns and sister Angela Cordova of St. Johns.

The family will receive friends and relatives at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 3, 2018, 2-4 and 6-9 P.M. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. with Deacon Steve Knight officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Diane June Pease, 63, of Dewitt, passed away Wednesday morning, December 27, 2017 surrounded by family. The daughter of Russell and Artis (Stampfly) Sibley, she was born September 26, 1954 in Lansing. Honoring her wishes, cremation has taken place.

Leona F. Robinson

Leona F. (McCrary, Dickenson) Robinson, 90 passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at her daughter Judy’s home in Harrison. She was born on October 5, 1927 in Ithaca, MI the daughter of Bernard and Nellie (Guild) McCrary and she resided most of her life in Ovid, MI. She married R. J. Robinson on September 2, 1983 at their home in Ovid. He preceded her in death in November of 2017. Leona worked at Motor Products for many years. She liked to travel, go fishing, camping and loved her dog, Skittles. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Harrison, MI.

Survivors include her sons, Edward (Katherine) Dickenson, of Rochester Hills, Alfred (Linda) Dickenson of Alabama and Duane (Denise) Dickenson of Lansing, daughters, Judy Flanner and Dona (Gary) VanAmburg; several grandchildren; siblings, Bernard (Carol) McCrary of Florida and Carolyn Patrick of St. Johns. She was preceded in death by parents, husband of 32 years, Ernest “Pat” Dickenson, granddaughter Nichole Flanner and sister Pauline M. Litwiller.

Funeral services will be held at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns on Saturday, December 30. 2017 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Tim Tanner and Pastor Tim Dickenson officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home beginning at 9:00 A.M. until service time at 11:00 A.M.


Bradford John O’Berry

Bradford John “Brad” O’Berry, age 65 of Portland, MI, passed away Sunday, December 24, 2017 at his home.

A celebration of Brad’s life will be held at Ryan’s Road House 902 State Street in St. Johns, MI at 3:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 28, 2017. A time of sharing and remembrance will be held immediately following the service until 6:00 P.M. Private burial will take place at Fulton Center Cemetery, Perrinton, MI at a later date.

Brad was born in Lansing, Michigan on January 14, 1952 the son of John and June (Richards) O’Berry. He graduated from Arlington Heights High School. Brad married Theresa Proko on June 16, 1984 at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church, Perrinton, MI.

Brad worked at Motorwheel for many years, he went on to sell real estate and he also trained people to become licensed in selling real estate. Brad also worked at Wholert Corporation in Lansing where he focused on payroll. He was currently employed at Delta Global Services as a supervisor at the Capital Region International Airport, Lansing, MI. Brad enjoyed fishing, fly fishing, competitive archery, playing football, basketball, golfing and watching TV with his family. He and Theresa enjoyed going to watch MSU football and basketball. Brad always dropped Theresa off and picked her up from work at the airport. He was always there to support his daughter Amber at school sporting events and concerts. Most of all he loved the time spent with his wife, daughter and son in law and his dog Beau.

He is survived by his wife: Theresa O’Berry of Portland, MI, daughter: Amber and Lance Dubay of Roseau, MN, niece: Joelle and Andy Conway of California, great niece: Katie Conway of California, mother in law: Eileen Proko of Perrinton, MI, brother in law: Terry and Judy Proko of Houston, TX, nephew: Benjamin and Katie Proko of Houston, TX, niece: Emily and Brad Pearcy of Houston, TX, brother in law: Tom and Jan Proko of Chelsea, MI, nephew: Shawn and Michelle Proko of Chelsea, MI, and his cousin who was like his brother: Scot (Kathy) Richards. He was preceded in death by his parents, step father Benjamin Butts, and sister Susan Watson.

Michael J. Wing, Sr.

Michael J. Wing Sr, 66 of St. Johns passed away on Thursday, December 21. 2017 at Sparrow Hospital following short illness. Michael was born on December 8, 1951 the son of Murl J. and Mary (Bappert) Wing. He graduated from Lansing Sexton High School and worked at General Motors until his retirement. He married Sandra J. Orweller on June 18, 1991 in St. Johns, MI.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra, son Michael J. (Nicole) Wing II of Lansing and daughter Tracy M. (Jared) Watson of NC. 3 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren and 4 step great great grandchildren; Step daughter Laurie L. Fivecoat of AZ.

Robert Lee “Hoppy” Hopkins

Robert Lee “Hoppy” Hopkins, age 61, of Alma, MI passed away Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at Woodland Hospice House, Mt. Pleasant, MI.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Robert was born in Merrill, MI on February 9, 1956 the son of Paul Eugene and Mary Ann (Micsak) Hopkins. He graduated from Merrill High School with the class of 1974. Robert worked for Saylor-Beal in St. Johns for many years until retirement. He enjoyed the outdoors including hunting and fishing. In his younger years he raced cars at Crystal Speedway and enjoyed muscle cars of all kinds.

He is survived by his parents Paul and Mary Hopkins, 4 daughters: Angela and Salvador Jimenez, Sara Hopkins, Rebecca and Scot Church, Nichole Hopkins, 2 sons: Adam Hopkins, Jose Hopkins, 19 grandchildren, 2 sisters: Paula Hopkins, Michelle Hopkins, 2 brothers: Richard and Kathy Hopkins, Doug and Tracy Hopkins, and many nieces and nephews.

Jean Marie Schafer, 82, of Fowler, MI, passed away Monday, December 18, 2017, at Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor, St. Johns, MI.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fowler, MI, on Thursday, December 21, 2017 at 10:30 A.M., with Rev. Fr. Dennis Howard officiating. Burial will take place at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery, Fowler, MI. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Goerge Chapel, Fowler, MI. Rosary Service will be prayed at 3:00 P.M. Wednesday, and a Vigil Service will be on Wednesday evening at 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Jean was born in Clinton County, MI on June 28, 1935, the daughter of Joseph and Dorothy (Schneider) Heckman. She graduated from Pewamo High School with the class of 1953. On June 8, 1957 she married Louis A. Schafer in Pewamo, MI. Jean worked for Federal Mogul in St. Johns for 25 years, retiring in 1990. She enjoyed going to craft shows, watching birds, and caring for her indoor plants. She was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church as well as a member of the Christian Mothers Association.

She is survived by her husband Louis Schafer of Fowler, MI; son Michael Schafer of Christiansburg, VA; daughter Vicki and Paul Horak of Fowler, MI; son Richard and Sandy Schafer of Fowler, MI; 8 grandchildren: Whitney and (Matt) Zirkle, Annah, Thomas, Gabrielle, Sidney and Dominic Horak, Roman and Nicholai Schafer, 2 great grandchildren, Mark and Daniel Zirkle, 6 brothers, John and Sherry Heckman, James and Ellen Heckman, Edward and Joan Heckman, Thomas Heckman, Kenneth and Joyce Heckman, Joseph and Ruth Heckman, 3 brothers in law, Robert Ladiski, Edward Ladiski, Luke and Maggie Fernholz. She was predeceased by her parents, 3 sisters, Marie Fernholz, Joanne and Theresa Ladiski. 2 sisters in law, Ann and Linda Heckman.

Lester Sehlke

Lester Sehlke died Friday, December 15, 2017 at the age of 91. He was born March 25, 1926 in Riley Township, Clinton County, MI the son of Herman and Mable (Marten) Sehlke. Lester was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fowler, loved fishing and enjoyed playing Euchre with family and friends. He was a lifelong farmer and served as Riley Township Treasurer for 38 years. On June 18, 1947 he married Catherine Sillman and she preceded him in death in September of 2001. On November 26, 2004 Lester married Dorothy Plowman Waldron and she survives him.

Also surviving are his children, Larry (Marilyn) of St. Johns, June (Jon) Tatroe of Perrinton, Roy (Jean Wilson) of Lansing, Terry (Sherry) of St. Johns, Tracy (Belinda) of Brockway, PA, Sherrie Klingbeil of Lansing and Tina (Rick) Mills of Fife Lake; step-children, Linda (Mike) Penikis of KS and Terry (Chris) Waldron of Pewamo; 16 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; one sister, Ilene Gibson and a brother-in-law, Evart Sillman. Lester was also predeceased by an infant daughter, Shirley and a sister, Viola Rossow.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, December 21, 2017 at St. Paul Lutheran Church 329 N. Sorrell, Fowler, MI 48835 with Pastor Paul Clark officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends from 9:30 am until service time on Thursday at the church. Interment will be held at 3:00 PM at St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery 8990 W. Church Rd. St. Johns. James O. Koenigsknecht

James Otto (Jim) Koenigsknecht, having fought a long hard battle with diabetes, heart disease and cancer, Jim passed away Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at his home, peacefully, surrounded by family. He was born December 6, 1946 at home in Fowler to parents, Alfred J. and Anna Rose (Simon) Koenigsknecht. He was second born of eight children. He attended Most Holy Trinity Catholic School through 8th grade and graduated from Fowler High School.

Following graduation he hired in at Fisher Body Division of General Motors, retiring with 41 plus years of service. He was a member of UAW Local # 602, the National Rifle Assoc., Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Foresters, Most Holy Trinity Parish, Fowler Athletic Boosters, Fowler Conservation Club. He had also retired from Dallas Township Fire Department after 20 years of service. Jim had a passion for hunting, bear, moose, deer, elk etc. taking many hunting trips with family and friends and making many memories, of which he loved to tell the stories. He loved deer hunting with his grandchildren. He loved following his grandchildren through their sporting events, always there to offer praise and encouragement. Being involved from kindergarten to college, they could always count on Grandpa Jim. He married Marsha Jane Parsons, August 5, 1967 and they were able to celebrate 50 years of marriage this past summer.

She survives him along with sons, Richard J. Koenigsknecht of Naples, FL and Scott M. (Jennifer) Koenigsknecht of Fowler; grandchildren, Madison, McKenzie, Josie, Cooper and Annie; sisters, Carol Eldridge of St. Johns, Diane Hulliberger of Dimondale; brothers, Tom (Jacque) Koenigsknecht of Perrinton, Mike (Diane) Koenigsknecht, Dale (Therese) Koenigsknecht, all of Fowler; sister-in-law, Jean (Fred Antes) Koenigsknecht of Fowler. Preceding Jim in death are his parents, in-laws, Richard A. and Barbara (Bennett) Parsons, brothers, Kenneth and Lawrence, nephews, Kenneth Jr. and Jeffrey L. Parsons and brother-in-law Douglas Eldridge.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 11144 W. Kent St. Fowler with Rev. Fr. Dennis Howard as Celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends Sunday and Monday, December 17 and 18, 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM with Rosaries prayed at 3:00 and 8:00 PM each day at The Most Holy Trinity Activity Center 11159 W. Kent St. Fowler. Memorial contributions may be made to No More Sidelines of Central Michigan, The Most Holy Trinity Education Trust Fund, Hospice House of Mid-Michigan or the charity of donor’s choice.

Our most heartfelt thanks to Sparrow Home Hospice, Sue, Kay and Kristina in helping us as we prepared for Jim’s Journey to Heaven. Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard but always near, still loved, still missed, still very dear. Think of him as living in the hearts of those he touched for nothing loved is ever lost and he was loved so much.
