Lewis, attorney with the Kemper, Wells and Lewis law firm in St Johns, was appointed District Court Judge by Governor William Milliken on July 23, 1973. He will fill the vacancy left by the death of Judge Roland Duguay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The A&#038;P Store<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/indylite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/gilson.jpg\" alt=\"gilson\" width=\"375\" height=\"343\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/indylite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/gilson.jpg 375w, https:\/\/stjindy.com\/indylite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/gilson-300x274.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This was the checkout counter at A&#038;P in the 1950s. Looking on is Don Gilson, store manager.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fred Lewis\u2019 Retirement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/indylite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/lewis.jpg\" alt=\"lewis\" width=\"500\" height=\"270\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/indylite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/lewis.jpg 500w, https:\/\/stjindy.com\/indylite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/lewis-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Fred Lewis, who worked 48 years for the St. Johns Post Office, was honored at a retirement dinner held Tuesday, January 11, 1966, by fellow employees and retired employees of the post office. U.S. 27. I\u2019m not sure if it was the anniversary at the new location or whether it included the time at the old location in downtown St. Johns as well. Rick Anderson accepts a piece of cake from two unidentified employees at \u201cThe Village Bake Shop\u201d that created the bake goods offered by the store.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Clinton Theater<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/indylite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/clinton.jpg\" alt=\"clinton\" width=\"375\" height=\"320\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/indylite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/clinton.jpg 375w, https:\/\/stjindy.com\/indylite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/clinton-300x256.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Clinton Theater was located in downtown St Johns in the first block. Roy G. Beechler and Richard Willits Beechler owned the theater that opened on November 1, 1935. Bill Beechler\u2019s office was located on the south side of the theater and on the north was a Barber Shop which always had barbers in it, the last one being Jim Viers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Antes Cleaners wall sign<\/strong>: say goodbye to a piece of downtown history<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/indylite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/antes-300x216.jpg\" alt=\"antes\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/indylite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/antes-300x216.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stjindy.com\/indylite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/antes.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Everything ages with time. People, places and even pieces of local history \u2013 like the painted advertisement sign for Antes Cleaners. Time has faded the painted lettering in recent years to the point where it\u2019s nearly illegible today. It probably would not have survived this long if the Mathews Dairy building that abutted Antes had remained standing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lester Lake Jewelry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/indylite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/lesterlake-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"lesterlake\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/indylite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/lesterlake-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stjindy.com\/indylite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/lesterlake.jpg 381w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lester Lake had purchased Allison\u2019s Jewelry Store in April, 1940. That firm had been established by C.S. Allison in 1879. The store was located in the front of the Hicks Store on the west side of the second block of Clinton Avenue.<br \/>\nJohn Harley, who died in November, 1948 had operated a new and used furniture store on the west side of Clinton in the first block. Lake\u2019s grand opening depicted in the photos above was celebrated in the newly renovated Harley store. Lester Lake sold his jewelry business on March 16, 1968.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A landmark goes up for sale<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/indylite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/kuntz2.jpg\" alt=\"kuntz2\" width=\"375\" height=\"281\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1305\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/indylite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/kuntz2.jpg 375w, https:\/\/stjindy.com\/indylite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/kuntz2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Elements of a St. Johns\u2019 landmark were available for sale this week in the form of furnishings contained within the brick walls of Oakland Place.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some of our favorite features Judge Frederick M.
