Fall Plant Sale is September 22
Fall is a great time to plant. Native plants and trees will be going into dormancy, and if newly planted, will have time to get acclimated before the active growing season brings weed pressure. Because native species have evolved with our climate, it is less likely that winter will impact native transplants.
Pre-orders are recommended as some species sell fast. A large selection of native plants and trees will also be available for purchase the day of the sale. Contact us with any questions on ordering. To place your order online, visit www.clintonconservation.org or Shop Now
The plant sale and pick up is September 22 12 p.m.-6 p.m. at Clinton Lake County Park 4665 Dewitt Rd, St. Johns.
Join them for a workshop on Friday, September 22 at 4:30 p.m. at Clinton Lake County Park. This workshop is a perfect how-to guide on selecting, planting, and caring for native plants. This will be an outdoor event, so please dress accordingly.
RSVP by calling the office or online at www.clintonconservation.org
Arts Council offers classes
Mandala Design Class Sunday, September 10 1 – 5 p.m.
$36.00 – $40.00
Join us at the Art & Soul Gallery for this fun and relaxing class taught by Theressa Levett to create your very own, wooden mandala. Mandala art originally focused on creating an art piece that represents balance, designed within a circle that contains a symmetrical pattern, with each part representing a part of the cosmos or the deities that make up portions of the universe.
The creative process of mandala making helps to find peace in the universe through balance. Mandalas can be made with a myriad of patterns and designs. It is all up to the artist what the pattern becomes and means to them. Mandalas can also be made simply for the artist to enjoy the process.
Each participant will be able to design mandalas on paper, then design and paint one, final mandala on a 12″ wood board. All supplies are provided. This class is $40.

Nature Conservancy’s 2023 Photo Contest offering local prizes
The Nature Conservancy (TNC) today announced an expansion of its renowned global Photo Contest to include double the number of categories and local prizes for photos taken in Michigan. TNC will begin accepting Photo Contest entries Aug. 30 through Sept. 29 and there is no cost to enter.
“We are thrilled The Nature Conservancy has expanded the 2023 Photo Contest to double the number of categories and include local contests for Michigan and two other states,” said Helen Taylor, state director of TNC in Michigan. “From sweeping sand dunes, to lush forests, to glistening rivers, lakes and streams and abundant wildlife, Michigan provides the perfect backdrop for seasoned photographers and amateurs alike.”
Categories for the local contest are flora and fauna, landscape, water, and people and nature. The grand prize winner will receive a $300 gift card and category winners will each receive a $150 gift card for Carhartt, Merrell, REI or Moosejaw (winner’s choice).
A panel of four judges will review local entries. Judges include Jason Whalen, co-founder of Fauna Creative, Jocelyn Coley, co-founder and CEO of The Allen Lewis Agency and member of the TNC Michigan Board of Trustees, Gretchen Valade, director of sustainability at Carhartt and member of the TNC Michigan Board of Trustees, and Autumn McGowan, a conservation fellow at TNC in Michigan.
Last year’s Photo Contest broke records for global participation with over 100,000 entries from a total of 196 countries and territories. In Michigan, more than 500 people submitted nearly 1,300 photos for the contest.
Chinese photographer Li Ping took the grand prize last year, for his winning shot featuring a drone’s eye view of a lonely highway bordered on each side by gullies extending outward in the shape of a tree.
This year, global photos will be judged according to 12 categories, double the number of categories from years past, which now include:
– Oceans
– People and Nature
– Plants and Fungi
– Freshwater
– Lands
– Mammals
– Climate
– Aerials
– Insects and Arachnids
– Underwater Life
– Birds
– Reptiles and Amphibians
Global winners will be chosen by a separate panel of judges. The contest will award over $25,000 in prize money, including a camera kit worth $5,000 for the overall grand-prize winner.
The global judging panel includes photographer Javier Aznar, photojournalist and filmmaker Morgan Heim and natural history photographer Frans Lanting.
Among the global entries, a first and second place winner will be chosen for each category as well as honorable mentions in all 12 categories.
The Nature Conservancy is a global conservation organization dedicated to conserving the lands and waters on which all life depends. Guided by science, TNC works to create innovative, on-the-ground solutions to the world’s toughest challenges so that nature and people can thrive together.
