Gifts by mail create holiday waste<\/strong><\/p>\n

The holiday season is upon us, and as we move forward it’s important to be mindful of our waste. American household waste increases by 25% during the holiday season. With the pandemic present, more people will be sending gifts through the mail. So If you plan on gifting items to loved ones or if you receive a gift via mail here are a few things to keep in mind.<\/p>\n

\"\"If you order a gift through Amazon, and it comes in a plastic envelope it might be recyclable.<\/p>\n

Bubble wrap, and air pillows can be recycled with plastic grocery bags which can be taken to most grocery store locations. Use the waste wizard to find locations.<\/p>\n

Break down boxes to save space in the recycling bin. This especially applies if you bring materials to a drop off site.<\/p>\n

The tape can stay. Don’t worry about removing the tape from gift boxes it all can be thrown into the recycling bin.
\nIf there is a gift with ribbon on it please remove it and toss it in the trash. Ribbon is not recyclable. As an alternative use a natural twine to decorate gifts.<\/p>\n

If you are wrapping a gift look for material made out of recycled paper or use something at home like newspaper, brown paper bag or even a festive fabric.<\/p>\n

Avoid styrofoam and use mushroom packaging or shredded paper. If you receive a package with styrofoam, use the waste wizard to find recycling locations.<\/p>\n

Remember When?<\/strong> – Concert to benefit Toys for Tots 2010<\/p>\n

Louie Longoria and Steve \u201cElvis\u201d Hunt will put on a concert on Saturday, December 4 to benefit the Clinton County Toys for Tots program. The concert starts at 7:00 p.m. and will be held at the Wilson Center in St. Johns. The cost of admission is $10 or a new unwrapped toy, valued at $10 or more.<\/p>\n

This is the fourth year Mr. Longoria has put on the concert and will be the second show for Mr Hunt \u201cElvis\u201d.<\/p>\n

Tickets for the concert are available from Longoria at Bee\u2019s Motors in St. Johns, or from Brenda Terpening.<\/p>\n

The best way to avoid cat bites is to learn the cat behavior signals that indicate that a cat is starting to feel uncomfortable in a particular situation. By understanding your cat\u2019s body language, you can avoid scenarios that create stress and ensure that your relationship with your cat gets stronger and healthier.<\/p>\n

\u201cOftentimes, cat aggression and cat biting is caused by miscommunication between species,\u201d said Russell Hartstein, certified pet behaviorist and CEO of FunPawCare in Los Angeles, California. Cat behavior and body language signals are great indicators of a cat\u2019s mood, and they can alert you to your cat\u2019s comfort level in the moment.<\/p>\n

The Danger of Cat Bites<\/em><\/p>\n

Although dog bites grab most of the headlines, cat bites are not without consequence. According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, about 20 to 80 percent of cat bites become infected. Cat bites can be serious even if they initially appear mild.<\/p>\n

Besides the risk of cat bites becoming infected, contracting rabies is also a cause of concern. The CDC states that in 2014, over four times more rabid cats were reported than rabid dogs. This disparity is attributed to cat owners not bringing their pet to see a veterinarian for proper vaccinations (including for rabies) as often as dog owners do.<\/p>\n

That is just one reason why providing your cat with regular veterinary care, including any necessary vaccines, is such a vital part of being a responsible cat owner.<\/p>\n

How Do I Know If I Am at Risk of My Cat Biting Me or Others?<\/em><\/p>\n

Most cats bite only as a last resort. Prior to biting, they will generally give plenty of signals through their behavior and body language to let you know they need some space.<\/p>\n

Think of the situation from your cat\u2019s point of view. In his mind, he has told you several times that he needs you to stop whatever it is that scaring him or stressing him out. You\u2019re ignoring him, so you\u2019ve left him no recourse but to take charge.<\/p>\n

By learning how to read cat behavioral cues, you can prevent your cat from feeling the need to bite.<\/p>\n

Pamela Uncles, M.Ed., CDBC at Companion Animal Behavior in the Washington, D.C. Metro area, offers these tips for identifying warning signs in cats:<\/p>\n

– Tail-twitching. If a cat begins to twitch his tail, he is becoming agitated and does not want to be bothered.<\/p>\n

– Flattened ears. Look for ears that are flattened to the side and to the back.<\/p>\n

– Eye shape. Eyes that are slanted, squinted, or have an extremely round appearance with dilated pupils can indicate that a cat is stressed or afraid.<\/p>\n

– Whisker placement. The whiskers of agitated cats may be held back against the face.<\/p>\n

– Rolling on his back. A cat may roll onto his back if he feels threatened. Some people may perceive this as submission, such as when a dog rolls onto his back, but cats will sometimes do this so they can bite and scratch with all four feet.<\/p>\n

– Hunched position. Agitated cats may take hunched positions with raised fur to make themselves look larger and more intimidating.<\/p>\n

– Hissing and growling. These are some of the last warnings that a cat will give before attacking. Not every cat will hiss or growl before biting.<\/p>\n

What Human Behavior Can Lead to Cat Bites and Aggression?<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a serious problem when a person fails to read a cat\u2019s body language,\u201d says Dr. Valarie Tynes, DVM, President of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists and a veterinary services specialist with Ceva Animal Health in Sweetwater, Texas. \u201cUnfortunately a cat\u2019s body language can be subtle and easily missed by pet owners.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a general rule of thumb, if a cat is walking away from you, it means they do not want to interact with you \u2026 Unfortunately, a large percentage of people will approach an animal even if it walks away from them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you want to show friendly behavior in cat language, you need to sit and let the cat come to you,\u201d says Dr. Tynes. If your cat initiates contact by jumping on your lap or sitting nearby and giving you a friendly nudge with his head, it should be safe to pet him. But still watch his body language. Some cats only enjoy being petted for short periods of time before they need a break. Never chase, grab or hug a cat that is trying to get away from you.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s especially important to monitor your cats\u2019 behavior around children and guests and offer him safe spots to escape to so that he doesn\u2019t feel agitated or cornered.<\/p>\n

\u201cCat owners should speak up and nicely tell their guests if their cat does not like to be pursued. Tell them that pursuing the cat, especially if the cat is walking away, is considered threatening,\u201d said Dr. Tynes. \u201cIf your cat or dog doesn\u2019t like to interact with people, then put them in a safe area with all of his\/her needs, such as a litter box, food, water and perch.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stress and Your Cat<\/em><\/p>\n

Pursuing a cat that does not welcome the interaction is not only stressful and potentially dangerous for people but for cats, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cCats can feel fear and anxiety like humans,\u201d says Dr. Tynes.<\/p>\n

If a cat is often in a state of stress, it can make them ill or even shorten their lifespans, says Hartstein.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo animal wants to live in a constant state of stress,\u201d he says. \u201cIt is detrimental to the quality of their lives and their life spans. It\u2019s important to respect your cat\u2019s preferences just as you respect the preferences in any other relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
