Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the public transit agency serving Clinton County residents has been implementing a variety of health and safety protocols to keep passengers and drivers safe, including masks at all times.

“The safety of our riders and operators has always been our top priority,” says MaLissa Schutt, Executive Director of Clinton Transit. “That has always meant making sure our vehicles were well-maintained and our drivers were well-trained – but in the wake of COVID-19, our commitment to safety has expanded to include practices like mask wearing, physical distancing and increased disinfecting.”

Clinton Transit has required all operators and passengers to wear masks at all times while on the buses since April 2020. In addition, the agency has installed plexiglass barriers to separate operators and passengers, and has remained fare-free to eliminate the need for contact during the transfer of money or passes.

During the middle and at the end of each shift, all contact points in the transit vehicles are wiped down, and all transit vehicles are treated with electrostatic disinfection applications on Tuesdays and Fridays.

“We know how important it is for public transit to keep people connected to essential services like medical care, grocery shopping, employment and more,” says Schutt. “When you see a Blue Bus on the road, you can be confident that we’re doing all we can to keep people safe.”

Executive Order 13998, issued by President Joe Biden on January 21, 2021, directs relevant regulatory authorities to require masks on all forms of public transportation in compliance with guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As a result, the CDC issued a transportation-based mask requirement order, effective February 1, 2021. Exceptions to the mask mandate include children under two years of age and individuals who cannot wear a mask due to a disability. More information is available through the U.S Department of Transportation.

Since the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Governor Gretchen Whitmer have had mask mandates in place in Michigan since last spring, the federal requirements represent no change for public transit agencies like Clinton Transit.

Clinton Transit is a public transit system that keeps people connected throughout Clinton County. Fondly known as the Blue Bus, Clinton Transit’s demand response system responds to ride requests and provides safe, reliable transportation for all county residents. The Sparrow Laboratories Drive-Thru Services Site is located at 3131 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing.

Those who fit the criteria (as defined by the state of Michigan) can get more information at www.Sparrow.org/Vaccine. Besides older adults, the 1B group includes frontline essential workers, such as law enforcement, firefighters, shelter workers, teachers and child care workers. Vaccines are by appointment only.

There will be no charge to the public for the vaccine. All administrative costs, for staffing and supplies, will be billed to insurance. Patients will not be billed for any balance not covered by insurance and those without insurance will not be charged.

Sparrow has received a total of 29,950 vaccine doses and 99 percent of them have been used or allocated, including those set aside for upcoming clinics. That includes 2,450 for Sparrow Clinton Hospital, 1,900 for Sparrow Ionia, 1,400 for Sparrow Eaton, and 800 for Sparrow Carson.

Sparrow has been a national leader in COVID-19 patient care and testing, becoming one of the first hospitals in Michigan to offer tests for inpatients and using innovative processes to increase access and availability. Our Frandor drive-thru site alone has processed over 100,000 tests.

Sparrow has also been nationally recognized for its innovative COVID patient visitation policy in which a family member or friend is allowed to visit patients on a limited basis wearing personal protective equipment and following strict safety procedures.

Kindergarten registration set for March 11

St. Johns Public Schools are registering kindergarten students for the 2021-2022 school year. The contest awards $10,000 in college scholarships and donates $2,000 to charities in the names of the winners.
Four high school seniors will each receive a $2,500 scholarship to an accredited Michigan college or university beginning fall 2021. Each winner selects a charity to receive a $500 donation from LAFCU. The entry deadline is March 31, 2021.

Applicants are asked to write a one-page essay that examines the long-term effects of the coronavirus pandemic on society, addressing such topics as human interaction, education, the economy, tourism, etc. Winning essays will be published in the Lansing State Journal, community sponsor of the contest.

“Every Michigan high school senior qualifies for this contest because winner selection is based solely on their one-page essay,” said Kelli Ellsworth Etchison, LAFCU chief marketing officer and chief diversity officer. “This supports the LAFCU belief that education is key to community success and that higher education should be within reach of anyone with the passion to pursue it.

“Through the essay, we’re asking applicants to examine how the pandemic will likely affect our way of life going forward. Gauging the future is an essential life skill. It’s the first step in assessing how they might fit into that future, which may influence their educational choices.”

Each winner will select one of the following charities to receive a $500 donation from LAFCU:
• CASA for Kids Inc.
• Weekend Survival Kits
• Girls on the Run Mid Michigan

Applicants must be a student at a Michigan high school and do not need to be a LAFCU member.
