Clinton County Historical Society consists of the Museum and the Archives. The mission statement of the Clinton County Historical Museum is to maintain the complex related to and typical of the Clinton County history, to provide education, and encourage community involvement.<\/p>\n

Any skills and time you have that would fit the mission like computer skills, publicity, community awareness, document sorting and cataloging, textile preservation, displays, presentations, cleaning, outside and inside maintenance, docent duty would be greatly appreciated.<\/p>\n

The Clinton County Historical Museum<\/span><\/a> is located at 106 Maple in St. Johns and plans on reopening for the Mint Festival, August 14 and 15 from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. The remaining year’s schedule is yet to be determined.<\/p>\n

The Archives is the keeper of documents and photos that represent the history and residents of Clinton County.<\/p>\n

If you have free time and an interest in keeping history available and accessible, please contact Julie Peters at 989-501-0599 or petersj@msu.edu<\/span><\/a>. There is always a need for computer skills, from home or at the Archives, filing, copying and research.<\/p>\n

To assist the mission, donations and membership are needed. Dues for the Museum are $25.00 and the Archives $20. Both can be mailed to PO Box 174, St. Johns, MI 48879.<\/p>\n

This strictly a volunteer group, and the reward of knowing you are helping history stay alive is great. Thank you for your consideration and support.<\/p>\n

2021 Mint Festival Pageant Contestants named<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 2021 St. Johns Mint Festival Pageant will be held next Thursday, July 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium of the St. Johns High School. The following sixteen girls will be participating:<\/p>\n

Tickets for the pageant will be on sale at the Chamber of Commerce office, located at 1013 S US 27 in St. Johns on Monday and Tuesday, July 19 and July 20 from 10 a.m. – Noon, or you will be able to get them starting at 6:00 p.m. outside the auditorium on July 22.<\/p>\n

Still time to Register your Mint Festival weekend Garage Sale<\/em><\/p>\n

If you are planning to hold a Garage Sale during the Mint Festival Weekend of August 13-15, you can register it with the festival and receive extra publicity.<\/p>\n

For a $10 fee your sale will be listed on Facebook with the other registered sales. It will be listed on flyers that will be available to pick up on the festival grounds, and each sale will receive 25 flyers to hand out to shoppers that list all the sales.<\/p>\n

The Garage Sale application is available to print off at www.clintoncountychamber.org\/mint<\/span><\/a>, or you can call 989-224-7248 or email ccchamber@4wbi.net<\/span><\/a> the Chamber for a copy. All applications are due back to the Chamber office by Friday, July 23, 2021.<\/p>\n

Cornhole Tournaments at the Mint Festival<\/em><\/p>\n

Cornhole is coming to the Mint Festival.<\/p>\n

Events include the following:<\/p>\n

Saturday, August 14:
\n– Social singles ($10) and Competitive Singles ($20). Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. Bags fly at 10:00 a.m.
\n– Social Doubles ($20) and Competitive Doubles ($40). Registration begins at 11:00 a.m. Bags fly at Noon or slightly later if singles are still going on.<\/p>\n

Sunday, August 15:
\n– 8 game switcholio with a new partner each game ($10). Registration begins at 11:00 a.m. Bags fly at Noon.
\n– Blind Draw ($10). Registration begins at 2:00 p.m. Bags fly when Switcholio ends.<\/p>\n

There will be other side games taking place as well including airmail raffle, 4 bagger torch and maybe more.<\/p>\n

Saginaw Irish Band performs at the Concert in the Park July 21<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Multiple Irish Music Award Nominees Siusan O’Rourke and Zig Zeitler Bouzouki will lead the Irish\/Celtic band, Monday’s Supper in the featured Concert in the Park program on Wednesday, July 21.<\/p>\n

This special concert will start at 7:00 p.m. in the William E. Tennant Performance Shell in the beautiful St. Johns City Park. It will feature a nice mix of both Traditional and Original Irish Ballads, bringing many wonderful Irish stories and legends to life.<\/p>\n

“Intimate, Charming, Funny and Seriously Irish is the theme for the evening,” explains Bill Tennant, concert coordinator. “You’ll love this group! Their beautiful vocals and mix of instruments will have you booking a flight to Dublin the next day. And it will be good to have one of our own, Nellie Schrantz, back in town and performing. She is a 2004 St. Johns High School graduate – an excellent violinist.”<\/p>\n

Members of this Saginaw group include Siusan on vocals and guitar, Zig on the mandolins, Kat Morris on vocals, whistles, bodhran and guitar, with Nellie playing fiddle. Monday’s Supper will have the table set with a nice variety of dishes, bringing the Tastiest Irish Music to your palate.<\/p>\n

The concert is sponsored by the Clinton County Arts Council and the City of St. Johns. It is open to the public free of charge – donations are graciously accepted.<\/p>\n

All concerts are presented rain or shine. The Lion’s Club food trailer will be available this year. Social distancing and safety precautions are strongly encouraged. The CCAC receives funding from the Michigan Council for Arts & Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts.<\/p>\n

Mint City Singers schedule information sessions<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Mint City Singers Fall, 2021 Season begins September 13.<\/p>\n

They will be holding two information sessions for new and returning members on July 19 and August 16 at Redeemer St Johns Campus in St. Johns at 7 p.m. both days.<\/p>\n

Jazz virtuoso guitarist performs at Brown Bag Concert July 23<\/strong><\/p>\n

Elden Kelly, a highly skilled solo guitar fingerstylist, composer and national touring artist, will be the featured performer on the new Brown Bag Concert Series on Friday, July 23 in downtown St Johns. The hour-long concert will start at 12 noon and will be held in the Rotary Park Pavilion by the CIS Trail and Railroad Depot.<\/p>\n

Elden is a seasoned jazz improviser, who is just as comfortable playing classical, world, and music of the Beatles. He also evokes traces of Latin, American roots, flamenco, and Indian music, which is underpinned by modern swing. He brings to his audiences across the country, music that is recognizably, uniquely exceptional.<\/p>\n

“Elden possesses guitar techniques that are the envy of many of the top players around the country,” says Bill Tennant, concert coordinator. “He is that good! He stretches the imagination and brings the extraordinary to every performance. It’s great to have him here in St Johns this summer.”<\/p>\n

Although Michigan claims him as their own, Elden is originally from Vermont. He carries a degree in Contemporary Improvisation from Boston’s prestigious New England Conservatory of Music. In 2008 he was honored with a full scholarship, coupled with a teaching assistant position at Michigan State University with Rodney Whitaker, earning a graduate degree in Ethnomusicology in 2011.<\/p>\n

This amazing concert is being presented by the Clinton County Arts Council and is made possible by a grant from the St Johns Area Community Fund using gifts received from The Forest and Doris Swatman Trust.<\/p>\n

The concert is open to the public free of charge and will be held rain or shine. Some picnic tables are available for the lunchtime concert, but it’s advisable to bring your favorite lawn chair. Social distancing and safety precautions are strongly encouraged.<\/p>\n

Annual ‘Bike to Build’ event returns August 7<\/strong><\/p>\n

The event mid-Michigan cyclists look forward to returns for its 12th year on Saturday, August 7.<\/p>\n

Bike to Build will again start from Northpointe Community Church, 505 E. Webb Road, DeWitt.<\/p>\n

The ride, which regularly attracts cyclists of all ages, gives riders a choice of routes between 20, 35, 50 and 75 miles and everywhere in between, all in one day.<\/p>\n

The $35 entry fee includes access to up to five rest stops and lunch.<\/p>\n

The event is a major annual fundraiser for Habitat. All proceeds further the mission of providing safe, decent and affordable housing to people in need through its housebuilding, critical home repair and wheelchair ramp programs. To learn more, call 989-227-1771, option 3.<\/p>\n
