SJHS goes virtual this week<\/strong><\/p>\n

St. Johns High School moved to online learning this week. According to Superintendent of Schools Mark Palmer, the school saw numerous new cases of COVID-19. At the beginning of the week there were 53 positive new cases. Preliminary contract tracing resulted in approximately 300 students identified as close contacts thus far.<\/p>\n

Based on these numbers and the Health Department’s recommendation, school officials made the difficult decision that St. Johns High School classes will be conducted online for the remainder of this week. They plan to return to in person instruction on Tuesday, January 18, 2022. Monday, January 17 is a previously scheduled teacher
\nprofessional development day. All SJHS activities and practices were also canceled through January 14, 2022.<\/p>\n

The Health Department and St. Johns Public Schools continue to recommend that all students and staff wear masks whenever they are in district buildings.<\/p>\n

MMDHD shares information on fake COVID test kits<\/strong><\/p>\n

The MidMichigan District Health Department wants people to know that fake at-home COVID-19 tests are being sold online.<\/p>\n

Both the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Better Business Bureau (BBB) recently released warnings related to fraudulent tests, so Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is reissuing her Websites Selling COVID-Related Products That Are Fake or Never Arrive Consumer Alert to highlight important reminders for consumers.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the pandemic continues to grip our nation, bad actors are finding new ways to take advantage of our current reality,\u201d Nessel said. \u201cRight now, there is a huge demand for at-home COVID-19 tests, so it’s important to understand there will be attempts to capitalize on that demand. The best way to combat criminal attempts to defraud consumers is to educate yourself on the latest scams.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Department of Attorney General’s Consumer Protection team is seeing an increase in calls and complaints related to at-home test concerns. At this time, complaints are being reviewed to determine if additional action is necessary.
\nRemember the following tips from the FTC if you\u2019re shopping online for COVID test kits and related items:<\/p>\n

– Make sure the test you\u2019re buying is authorized by the FDA. Check the FDA\u2019s lists of antigen diagnostic tests and molecular diagnostic tests before you buy to find the tests authorized for home use. (EUA is \u201cemergency use authorization.\u201d)
\n– Check out a seller before you buy, especially if you\u2019re buying from a site you don\u2019t know. Search online for the website, company, or seller\u2019s name plus words like \u201cscam,\u201d \u201ccomplaint,\u201d or \u201creview.\u201d
\n– Compare online reviews from a wide variety of websites. You can get a good idea about a company, product, or service from reading user reviews on various retail or shopping comparison sites. Think about the source of the review. Ask yourself: Where is this review coming from? Is it from an expert organization or individual customers?
\n– Pay by credit card. If you\u2019re charged for an order you never got, or for a product that’s not as advertised, contact your credit card company and dispute the charge.<\/p>\n

Sparrow Clinton drive-thru changes hours<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sparrow Clinton Hospital\u2019s drive-thru COVID testing, located at 805 S. Oakland Street in St. Johns, is changing hours beginning Monday, January 17. The new hours will be:<\/p>\n

– Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 8 a.m. to noon
\n– Tuesday and Thursday: 1-5 p.m.<\/p>\n

Relay for Life Kickoff to go virtual<\/strong><\/p>\n

Relay for Life is moving to a virtual Kickoff due to COVID numbers, but they are planning a Relay Rally in March.

The Relay For Life movement inspires the community to celebrate people who have been touched by cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action for lifesaving change. Funds raised from Relay For Life events allow the ACS to attack cancer in dozens of ways, each of them critical to achieving a world without cancer \u2013 from developing breakthrough therapies and innovative research, to building supportive communities that come together to help those affected by cancer with access to treatment.<\/p>\n

Clinton County launches broadband survey January 10<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Clinton County Board of Commissioners has launched a survey to gauge the broadband internet needs of county residents. The initiative, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act, will guide a funding strategy to address the broadband needs of residents, schools, and businesses.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Commissioners are looking forward to hearing from county residents on the important topic of access to quality broadband,\u201d said Kam Washburn, Chair of the Board of Commissioners.<\/p>\n

Since the beginning of the Covid-19 emergency, the lack of available and effective broadband internet has limited the ability of County residents to live a more digital lifestyle. Constituents and businesses alike have made clear the need for greater access to broadband speeds that allow users to quickly connect to the internet. The Michigan Broadband Roadmap, published in 2018, noted several economic gains that can be facilitated by investment in broadband access.
\n– Farmers with broadband access experience a 6% average increase in farm revenue.
\n– Homes with adequate broadband see an estimated $1,850 per year economic benefit.
\n– Telemedicine adds an estimated $522,200 to rural communities and reduces hospitalizations.
\n– Broadband access can increase home values by an average of 3.1%.<\/p>\n

\u201cI strongly encourage residents to participate in this survey,\u201d said County Administrator Craig Longnecker, \u201cThis is a historic opportunity to provide input to a policy discussion regarding critical infrastructure for Clinton County.\u201d<\/p>\n

Legion Dinners to resume January 22<\/strong><\/p>\n

American Legion Post 153 in St. Johns will host Quarterly Community Outreach Dinners to support the Legion Family Organizations.<\/p>\n

The first dinner is scheduled for Saturday, January 22, 2022 from 4:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at American Legion Post 153,
