Rodney B. Wilson Class of 1968 to celebrate 50th<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 1968 Class of Rodney B. Wilson will celebrate its 50th anniversary during Mint Festival weekend.<\/p>\n

Festivities will start with a class luncheon on the Patio and in the Pool Room at Ryan’s Roadhouse on Friday, August 10th from Noon until 4:00 pm. They would like to invite anyone from the Classes of 1967 and 1969 to join them. Lunch and beverage will be on your own. On Saturday, August 11th the class will meet at The Emerald Golf Course for social hour at 6:00 p.m. followed by dinner at 7:00 p.m. After dinner plan on more catching up, dancing and making new memories. Include immunizations on back-to-school checklist <\/strong><\/p>\n

Summer sure does fly by: so much fun to be had and so little time.<\/p>\n

Not long ago kids celebrated the last day of school and store shelves are already being stocked with back-to-school supplies and television commercials peddling the latest fashion trends will be airing soon.<\/p>\n

The lazy days of summer really do go by in the blink of an eye. But on the bright side, there are several weeks of summer left for families to enjoy, so take that camping trip, spend the day at the beach or go for a long bike ride. Just don\u2019t forget to make sure your kids are up-to-date on their immunizations before the bell rings on the first day of school.<\/p>\n

All children need protection from vaccine-preventable diseases, like tetanus, pertussis, diphtheria, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B, meningitis and chickenpox. Protection is especially important for those entering a childcare facility, kindergarten or 7th grade, and for those changing school districts, as certain vaccinations are mandatory.<\/p>\n

If your child is college-bound, make sure they are up-to-date on their immunizations as well, including meningococcal vaccines. Some diseases can spread quickly in settings like dorm rooms and classrooms, so be aware that many colleges and universities have vaccination requirements for school entry.<\/p>\n

It is the health department\u2019s responsibility to ensure that the public is protected from vaccine-preventable diseases and that parents make informed decisions about whether or not to vaccinate their child. If your child is not immunized:<\/p>\n

– They are at greater risk of catching vaccine-preventable diseases.
\n– They can infect others, including infants and the elderly, who are at-risk of suffering a more severe reaction.
\n– They may be excluded from school or child care for several days or weeks to prevent catching or spreading a vaccine-preventable disease.<\/p>\n

Diseases like pertussis, measles, and chicken pox are making a comeback, due in part to an increase in the number of children who are not being immunized. The Mid-Michigan District Health Department (MMDHD) strongly encourages parents to immunize their children, but ultimately, it\u2019s the parent\u2019s decision. Parents who do not want their child to be immunized will need to present the school with a signed waiver. If immunization is being waived because of a medical reason, your child\u2019s doctor can sign the waiver. If immunization is being waived for religious or personal reasons, the health department will need to sign the waiver. The purpose of the waiver is to make sure that parents have an opportunity to speak with a health care professional about vaccinations and discuss any concerns.<\/p>\n

The Mid-Michigan District Health Department provides immunizations by appointment to those with Medicaid and without insurance. A small fee may apply, but no child is turned away because of an inability to pay. Children 18 years and younger may be eligible for the Vaccines for Children program, which provides vaccines at no cost to kids who might not be vaccinated because of an inability to pay. To qualify, a child must have Medicaid, have no health insurance, be under-insured, or be an American Indian or Alaskan Native.<\/p>\n

Those with certain private insurance plans may also be able to get vaccinated at the health department; just be sure to call first to see if your insurance is accepted.<\/p>\n

Soup kitchen makes stops in area next week<\/strong><\/p>\n

His Cup Runneth Over, a mobile soup kitchen, will be making a stop at<\/p>\n

– First Congregational Church, 100 Maple Ave, St. Johns 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Tuesday, July 24 and at<\/p>\n

– Beacon of Hope\/First Baptist Church, 512 S. US 27, St. Johns, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 24 and at<\/p>\n

– Carson City Linden Apartments, 320 E. Linden St., Carson City, Thursday, July 26 from 11 a.m to 1 p.m, and at<\/p>\n

– The Meadows of St. Johns, 2265 W. Parks Rd., St. Johns, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Thursday, July 26.<\/p>\n

Briggs District Library News<\/strong>

\nToddler Storytime<\/em>: Children ages 2-3 (with a participating adult) are invited to join us on Wednesday mornings at 10:30-11:00 from August 1 to August 22. The program will include stories, music, movement and crafts. Registration is required and open now.<\/p>\n

Garden Buddies<\/em>: Grow with us in the Rae Johnson\u2019s Children\u2019s Garden, where will learn about what is takes to grow the food we love to eat. Children ages 7-12 are invited to join us for our second session of Garden Buddies on Tuesday evenings starting July 31 and going thru August 21. We will be meeting behind the library for this program, 5-6:30pm. Registration is required and open now.<\/p>\n

\u201cFun and Games\u201d Chapter Chatter<\/em> \u2013 It\u2019s all fun and games for our next Chapter Chatter session, Monday evenings, 7:00-7:45p.m., August 6-27. We will share a short chapter book over the 4-week session, and we will play, toss, balance, spin, and more with a series of games each week. Registration is required and is open at this time.<\/p>\n

Back to School<\/em> \u2013 Students who will be entering preschool or kindergarten are welcome to join us for stories about starting school, a craft, and a snack on Thursday, August 9, from 6:30-7:30p.m. Registration for this program is required, and begins Thursday, July 12.<\/p>\n

Tween Program<\/em> \u2013 Tweens ages 9-12 can join us on Tuesday, August 7, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. when we will be creating shoebox cities! During this makerspace event, tweens will use recycled materials to design neighborhoods and create a city. Registration is required for this event, and is now available.<\/p>\n

Seed Saving<\/em> – Abigail Harper from MSU Extension will be here to discuss seed saving from your home vegetable or flower garden on Thursday, August 16th from 6:30-7:30. This program is designed for anyone who wants to the acheive all the benefits of seed saving. Such as saving money, preserving genetic diversity, building a community of gardeners, and much more! Registration is not requried but is appreciated. No library card is requried for this program.<\/p>\n

4-H Fair Family Storytime<\/em> – Come join us at the 4-H fair Monday, July 30 through Thursday August 2 for a family storytime. There will be crafts, music, and stories. We will be there Monday-Thursday, 3:30-4:30 and Thursday, 10:30-11:30.<\/p>\n

Play-Doh Fun!<\/em> \u2013 Children ages 4-6 are welcome to join us at the library on Tuesday August 14, 6:30 \u2013 7:30 for an hour of fun and creativity. We provide the Play-Doh and other creative items like beads, feathers, straws, toothpicks, etc. Registration is required and and began on Tuesday, July 17.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s LEGO Time<\/em> – We have tubs of LEGOS for imaginative building and creating fun for children ages 7-12 on Tuesday, August 21, 6:30-7:30. Registration is required and begins on Tuesday, July 24.<\/p>\n

S.A.M. in the Summer<\/em> \u2013 Fun, hands-on activities in Science, Art, and Math for children in grades 1-6. MATH #1: Grades 4-6, Wednesday, 7\/25, 3-4pm. MATH #2: Grades 1-3, 8\/1, 3-4pm. Registration for all S.A.M. programs is required and is open.<\/p>\n

Tales to Tails<\/em> \u2013 Free Reading Program with 15 minute sessions for children ages 6-12 to practice reading aloud to Ruger, a certified therapy dog. Summer Schedule: 2nd Thursday, 8\/9 from 6:30-7:15. This program encourages confidence and reading skills over the summer in a relaxing environment. Registration is required and is open.<\/p>\n

Family Movie Fridays<\/em> \u2013 We will be once again showing free movies for the family to enjoy. Movies will continue each Friday in July, and all shows begin at 2:30p.m. Registration, and a complete list of all the movies being shown this summer, are now available on our website.<\/p>\n

Library Closure<\/em>– The Library will be closing at 1:00pm on Friday August 10 and be closed Saturday August 11 during the Mint Festival. Railroad Street in front of the Library will be closed to traffic starting Friday afternoon and all day Saturday. The drop box on the Library porch will be available for returns throughout this closure.<\/p>\n
