{"id":16300,"date":"2022-07-07T20:58:02","date_gmt":"2022-07-08T00:58:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/?p=16300"},"modified":"2024-01-08T12:31:47","modified_gmt":"2024-01-08T12:31:47","slug":"more-news-212","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/newindy\/?p=16300","title":{"rendered":"More News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Michigan residents invited to free Virtual Alzheimer\u2019s Conference July 13 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Alzheimer\u2019s Foundation of America (AFA) will host a free virtual Alzheimer\u2019s educational conference for Michigan residents on Wednesday, July 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. EST as part of its 2022 national Educating America Tour. The conference, which is free and open to everyone, will allow participants to learn from, and ask questions of, health and caregiving experts. To register go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alzfdn.org\/tour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000cc;\">www.alzfdn.org\/tour<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sessions during the AFA virtual conference will include:<\/p>\n<p><em>Living with Dementia and Other Chronic Conditions: How Do Family Care Partners Influence Another\u2019s Health and Well-Being?<\/em><br \/>\nFamily care partners often put their loved ones\u2019 needs ahead of their own but neglecting their own health can negatively impact them and the person for whom they are caring.<\/p>\n<p>Courtney A. Polenick, Ph.D., will talk about how someone living with dementia and their family care partners impact each other\u2019s health and well-being. For example, if the care partner exhibits depression or has high blood pressure, how will that affect their loved one living with dementia? Dr. Polenick will discuss strategies to maintain the health and well-being of both partners through exercise, adopting a healthier diet, or other means.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Polenick is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan Medical School and Faculty Associate in the Aging &amp; Biopsychosocial Innovations Program of the Survey Research Center at the U-M Institute for Social Research<\/p>\n<p><em>Navigating the Estate Planning and Elder Law Maze <\/em><br \/>\nWhen a family member is diagnosed with Alzheimer\u2019s disease or another dementia-related illness, it\u2019s never too soon to plan for their long-term care and get the necessary documentation in place. Elder law attorney, Glenn Matecun, will discuss how to plan for long-term care while legally protecting your assets, and the foundation you should create to safeguard your loved one and your family.<\/p>\n<p>Glenn has been a Michigan estate planning and elder law attorney for over 30 years. He is an attorney with the law firm of Matecun, Thomas &amp; Olson, PLC.<\/p>\n<p><em>What is Dementia? Understanding the Differences Between Diseases and Types of Dementia<\/em><br \/>\nAlzheimer\u2019s disease and dementia are terms which are often used interchangeably, but many people do not know there is a difference between them or that there are other types of dementia-related illnesses besides Alzheimer\u2019s. Barry Kaufman will provide an overview of Alzheimer\u2019s disease and dementia, describing symptoms, warning signs and other features of each type of dementia. He will share with caregivers what they can expect as their loved ones\u2019 disease progresses.<\/p>\n<p>Barry Kaufman, a West Bloomfield resident, has been living with Lewy Body Dementia (LBD) for the past 12 years. He retired from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and is an active participant in LBD research and support groups with the NIH (National Institutes of Health) and the University of Michigan. He serves on the Steering Committee of the Michigan Dementia Coalition, a statewide coalition that consists of approximately 200 individuals from dementia-related fields and backgrounds, representing more than 65 organizations. He is also a member of the National Council of Dementia Minds<\/p>\n<p>There will also be a special musical performance by singer-songwriter David Molinari of Senior Sing-A-Long, a West Michigan nonprofit organization which provides music therapy to individuals living with dementia-related illnesses in long-term care communities.
