{"id":2000,"date":"2018-08-30T20:56:24","date_gmt":"2018-08-31T00:56:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/?p=2000"},"modified":"2018-08-30T20:56:24","modified_gmt":"2018-08-31T00:56:24","slug":"transitions-28","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/newindy\/?p=2000","title":{"rendered":"Transitions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Obituaries<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>John Steve Fabus Jr.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/fabus_john.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"91\" height=\"129\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1950\" \/>John Steve Fabus Jr., age 77, of Ashley, MI, passed away Monday, August 27, 2018, at Munson Healthcare-Grayling Hospital, Grayling, MI.<\/p>\n<p>Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes Elsie, MI, on Friday, August 31, 2018 at 6:30 P.M., with Mrs. Margaret Horak officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 31, 2018 from 3:00-6:30 P.M. prior to the service at the funeral home.<\/p>\n<p>John was born in St. Johns, MI on March 29, 1941, the son of John Steve and Lena Elizabeth (Sedlar) Fabus.  He resided most of his life in Ashley and was a graduate of Ashley High School class of 1958.  John retired from Federal Mogul in 2006.  He loved to fish and was an avid sports fan.<\/p>\n<p>He is survived by his daughter Michele and Tony Tupica of Ashley, MI; son John Fabus and Joan Phillips of Bay City, MI; daughter Sheri and John Smeltzer of Sedalia, MO;  9 grandchildren: Michael (Heather) Tupica, Mary (Rick) Evans, Mark Tupica, Erica Fabus, Andrew Smeltzer, Ben Smeltzer, Abby Smeltzer, Claire Smeltzer and Eli Smeltzer; a great-granddaughter Emily Evans; sister Marie and Jerry Skaryd of Ashley, MI; brother Tom and Audrey Fabus of DeWitt, MI; brother Jerry and Janet Fabus of Monterey, TN; and sister Karen and Rich Maxa of St. Johns, MI.  John was preceded in death by his parents.<\/p>\n<p>Memorials may be made to a Charity of Donor&#8217;s Choice. The family is being served by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithfamilyfuneralhomes.com\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0000CC\">Smith Family Funeral Homes<\/font><\/a>, Elsie, MI.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Martin Charles Stack<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/stack_martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"91\" height=\"129\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1947\" \/>The world lost a beautiful soul filled with grace and love on August 22, 2018 with the passing of Martin Charles Stack.  Marty fought a courageous 16 month battle with metastatic prostate cancer and died at the age of 50.   He was born on September 20, 1967 to Dr. Jack and Carol Stack in Alma, Michigan.  Marty was the youngest of four children.  He lived a life filled with adventure and enthusiasm and was deeply loved by his family and his friends around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Marty leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 25 years, Maki Stack and his two treasured children Marina and Kai.  He is also survived by his loving mother Carol Ann Stack and his mother and father-in-law Masaru and Michiko Aoyama. Marty leaves behind three devoted siblings including Molly (Dr. Paul David) Minnick, Dr. Matthew (Susan) Stack, Dr. Michael (Dr. Leyla Moossavi) Stack, and two loving brother-in-laws Takema (Akiyo) Aoyama and Asahi (Rika) Aoyama.  His treasured nieces and nephews include Ryotaro and Miyu Aoyama, Honoka Aoyama, Dr. Brandon (Summer) Minnick, Julie (Dan) Huggler, Anderson (Kelsey) Minnick, Molly Carol Minnick (Dakota Iocco), David, Peter, Charlie and Danny Stack, Becky (Will) Luetkemeier, Sara, Jack and Camran Stack.  Marty also leaves many aunts, uncles, cousins, great nieces and great nephews who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his father Dr. Jack M. Stack and his grandparents Charles and Sammy Anderson, Jack Stack and Ruth Inman.<\/p>\n<p>Marty spent his life dedicated to international studies and student exchange programs at institutions of higher education in the United States and Japan.  He was a 1985 graduate of Alma High School.  Marty attended Alma College where his love of international studies began.  He graduated with a Bachelor\u2019s Degree in Sociology in 1991.  Marty went on to study at Ryukoku University in Japan where he received a Master\u2019s Degree in Sociology. Most recently Marty served as the Director of International Programs at Mid-Michigan Community College where he had many friends and respected colleagues.  He was formerly an Associate Professor at the University of Shiga Prefecture and an Adjunct Professor at Ryukoku University in Japan.  Marty also served as the former Program Coordinator at Michigan State University Office of Study Abroad and was the former Program Coordinator at Japan Center for Michigan Universities.  To say that Marty had friends around the world only begins to capture the people whose lives he touched through his love and support of student learning.  He was a keen observer of human interests and interactions and was a peace maker in the world.  He never spoke an unkind word. He was gracious and sweet. He was wise and wonderful. His greatest wish was to leave a legacy of international peace and understanding through the students whose lives he touched.<\/p>\n<p>A memorial service celebrating Marty\u2019s life will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Dunning Memorial Chapel on the campus of Alma College with Pastor Rick Stieve and Chaplain Andrew Pomerville officiating. A luncheon will follow. Memorial contributions for the education of Marty\u2019s children can be made to his family. The family is being served by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keckcolemanfh.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0000CC\">Keck-Coleman Funeral Home<\/font><\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Douglas J. Atkinson<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/atkinson_douglas.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"91\" height=\"129\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1942\" \/>Douglas J. Atkinson died Saturday, August 25, 2018 at the age of 81. He was born in St. Johns on October 16, 1936 the son of Thomas and Helen (Kasper) Atkinson.  Doug had several jobs during his working career. He worked for Pohl Brothers, General Motors, but primarily he was a painter. He painted homes, both interiors and exteriors working alongside his brother Jerry and their company, Maple Leaf Painters.  Some of Doug\u2019s favorite words of wisdom were, \u201cback up and go ahead\u201d, \u201chold the farm\u201d, \u201cso glad you could see me\u201d and \u201clittle peeler.\u201d In 1986 Doug married Carol Murphy Douglass and she survives him.<\/p>\n<p>Also surviving are his children, Julie (Jerry) Slocum, Doug (Amy) Atkinson, Bill (Karen) Atkinson, Lori (Jim) Smalley, Bruce (Toni) Douglass, Julie Wagar, Renee (Jeff) Conant, Mervin Douglass and Brian (Cheryl) Douglass; grandchildren, Baireid Slocum, Erik, Jake and Callie Atkinson, Coleton Atkinson, Heather and Andy Christmann, Natalie and Patrick Douglass, Ashley Douglass, Tara Bellingar, Mike Bellingar, Shawna (Mike) Reese, and Chris (Michelle) Smalley; great grandchildren, Noah Brawner, Lilly Grace Christmann, Bryce Douglass, Avery Smalley, Michael and  Kayelynn Bellingar, and Mason Reese; one sister, Connie Welton; one brother, Ron (Kay) Atkinson; many nieces and nephews,and his beloved cat Beau. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Jerry and Dale Atkinson; a sister, Betty Knight and a grandson, Simeon Slocum.<\/p>\n<p>The family will receive relatives and friends from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM on Wednesday, August, 29, 2018 at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keckcolemanfh.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0000CC\">Keck-Coleman Funeral Home<\/font><\/a>, St. Johns. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, August 29th with Pastor John Jakus officiating. Memorials may be made to Kyomi\u2019s Gift Foundation.
