He received a Declaration from Vice Mayor Heather Hanover for his service.

Mayor Beaman has done a fine job for the City of St Johns in many different capacities. He will still remain in his position as a Pharmacist at MSU.

Several people turned out for the reception. Refreshments were served.

On behalf of the residents of St Johns, thank you for a job well done.

Health Department recognized for being breastfeeding-friendly

The Mid-Michigan District Health Department was recently recognized by the Michigan Breastfeeding Network for being a breastfeeding-friendly workplace. MMDHD was awarded the silver level of achievement for its continued effort to support breastfeeding employees in the workplace. MMDHD was praised for its policy that provides breastfeeding employees a flexible schedule and a private location for breastfeeding or pumping for the first year after they give birth.

Shannon McKenney Shubert, Executive Director of the Michigan Breastfeeding Network, presented the award to MMDHD as a component of the “MIBreastfeeding-Friendly Business Project”, which aims to increase the number of Michigan businesses that comply with the federal breastfeeding accommodation law.

Gateway classroom awarded grant

Congratulations to Mrs. Erica Muehlhauser at Gateway Elementary for being selected for the “One Class at a Time” grant from Dr. Grubaugh and WLNS. Dr. Grubaugh, St. Johns Public Schools class of 1997 Alum, from Grubaugh Orthodontics gave awarded $250 to Mrs. Muehlhauser’s kindergarten classroom.

Changes to Fall Leaf Collection

No need to bag leaves any longer; the City of St. Johns has purchased a leaf vacuum truck system. This vacuum will pick up leaves more efficiently and quickly, while leaving behind less debris.

The schedule for picking up leaves is as follows:

North of M-21 (State Street) will be the first half of October and November

South of M-21 (State Street) will be the second half of October and November

Please rake leaves in a pile in the City right-of-way area in front your house, between the sidewalk and the curb. If there is no sidewalk in front of your property, please rake leaves 6 inches behind the curb but not further than 6 feet from the curb.

Do not rake leaves in the street because the leaves can be hazardous with traffic and also block storm sewers from draining properly. Anyone raking or otherwise placing leaves, trimmings, and similar type organic plant materials in the public street will be subject to a $50 civil infraction fine.

You may still use the compostable brown yard waste bags for leaves, garden vegetation (including pumpkins) & small sticks. These bags will be picked up by the curb during your normal scheduled leaf collection pick-up.

A final reminder, despite all advanced preparation, equipment can breakdown or weather events can slow or end the program early. Do not wait to rake. Early snowfall requires equipment and crews to be redirected to snow removal operations.

If you are a senior or physically challenged and are unable to dispose of your leaves, contact City Offices at (989) 224-8944, ext. 282 or email twright@ci.saint-johns.mi.us by November 1st so arrangements can be made.

Trick or Treat hours set

The daytime Event-So-Scary, sponsored by the Clinton County Chamber of Commerce, will be held from 3:30-5:30 p.m. for young children to trick-or-treat at various businesses.
