{"id":3864,"date":"2019-03-07T20:56:50","date_gmt":"2019-03-08T01:56:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/?p=3864"},"modified":"2019-03-07T20:56:50","modified_gmt":"2019-03-08T01:56:50","slug":"transitions-52","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/newindy\/?p=3864","title":{"rendered":"Transitions"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Obituaries<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Kenneth James Schulze<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kenneth James \u201cJim\u201d Schulze, age 74, of Maple Rapids, MI, passed away Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at his home.<\/p>\n<p>Following Jim&#8217;s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be a memorial service at a later date.<\/p>\n<p>Jim was born in St. Johns, MI, on May 29, 1944, the son of Kenneth A. and Margarite A. (Munro) Schulze. He attended Fulton Schools. Jim served his country in the United States Army. He worked at the village of Maple Rapids DPW for many years.  Jim was a member of Maple Rapids United Methodist Church.<\/p>\n<p>Jim was an avid car enthusiast.  He loved going to car shows and showing his El Camino, which had first belonged to his dad.  He also enjoyed watching NASCAR.  Jim loved serving as a volunteer fireman for the Maple Rapids Fire Department.<\/p>\n<p>He is survived by a brother Karl (Shari) Schulze of FL and his long time companion, Robin Hattis of Maple Rapids. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Margarite Schulze, and sister Sharon Schulze.<\/p>\n<p>The family is being served by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithfamilyfuneralhomes.com\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0000CC\">Smith Family Funeral Homes<\/font><\/a> &#8211; Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Steven Blaine Benner<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/benner_steven.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"91\" height=\"129\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3829\" \/>Steven Blaine Benner, 57 died at the Laurels of Carson on Sunday, March 3, 2019.  He was born on March 24, 1961 in Alma, MI. He had lived most of his life in St. Johns, MI.  He was a machinist in the manufacturing industry. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, fishing, camping, collecting John Deere and drawing.<\/p>\n<p>Surviving are his mother Dawn Blizzard (Bill) of Dimondale, and his father Norman Benner of Leesburg, Fl. He is survived by his children, Chad (Mindy) Benner, Jeremy (Jessica) Benner, Angela Lott (Alison), Nicole (Tim) Weiler, and Carrie Benner;  his sisters, Laurie Lorish (Ron),  Kelly (Jack) Williams and brother, Dennis (Dianne) Benner and 13 grandchildren, many nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts and cousins.<\/p>\n<p>The family will receive friends and relatives at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keckcolemanfh.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0000CC\">Keck-Coleman Funeral Home<\/font><\/a>  on Wednesday, March 6, 2019, 3 till 8 P.M.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>John Joseph Smith<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/smith_john.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"91\" height=\"129\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3830\" \/>John Joseph Smith, age 78 of St. Johns, MI passed away, March 2, 2019 at his home. John was born in Lansing, MI on March 22, 1940, the son of Herman and Irene (Galbavi) Smith.  He graduated from Sexton High School, then Michigan Tech and Ferris State University.  He graduated from Ferris with a degree in Pharmacy.  John married Kathy Andrews on June 5, 1965 and they enjoyed over 53 years together.<\/p>\n<p>After working as a Pharmacist for over 40 years, John retired and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, skiing, his cabin and gardening. John was a lifetime member of the St. Johns Knights of Columbus. He will always be remembered for his love for his family and his passion for the outdoors.<\/p>\n<p>He is survived by his wife, Kathy, his daughters, Lisa (William Bachteal) Smith and Debra Smith. Son, Richard Smith and his sisters, Elizabeth Andrews and Barbara Smith. The family is being served by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keckcolemanfh.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0000CC\">Keck-Coleman Funeral Home<\/font><\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Ruth Ann Beck<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/beck_ruthann.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"91\" height=\"129\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3823\" \/>Ruth Ann Beck, age 77, of Ashley, MI, passed away Thursday, February 28, 2019, at The Laurels of Carson City.<\/p>\n<p>A Memorial Service will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes Ithaca, MI, at 4:00 P.M. on Monday, March 4, 2019. Visitation will be held from 1:00 P.M. until the time of the service. Burial will take place at North Star Cemetery at a later date.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth was born in Ithaca, Michigan on February 10, 1942, the daughter of Edward Richard and Edna (Wilson) Chase.  She graduated from Ithaca High School.  Ruth married Duane Beck on December 24, 1962 in Alma. Duane passed away on December 9, 2007.<\/p>\n<p>She worked as a CNA at Hazel Findlay Country Manor and also Ashley Care Center.  Ruth was a Girl Scout Leader for many years.  She loved her dog Missy and her cat Bootsie.  Ruth enjoyed her flowers, Detroit Tigers, U of M, watching Goldrush, and country music.  She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  The time spent with them was very special to her.  Her brother, sisters, nieces and nephews were also very important to her.<\/p>\n<p>She is survived by son Rick Beck of Ashley, MI; son Jeff and Monica Beck of Willcox, AZ; son-in-law David Levandowski of Alma, MI; 8 grandchildren: Kaylee, Tiani, Rachelle, Rebecca, Kasandra, Samantha, Johnny, and Danielle; 10 great-grandchildren: Ryder, Eli, Erijah, Tori, Makenzie, Karter, Melva, Karter, Alasia and Mariko.  Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and daughter Kimberly Levandowski, siblings: Thelma Cheney, Fern Lover, Dolores &#8220;Jean&#8221; Smith, Norma Benner, Betty Mae Chase, Beverly Thayer, Edward &#8220;Bud&#8221; Chase, Carol Miller, and Dawn Sisco.<\/p>\n<p>Memorials may be made to Gratiot County Commission on Aging, Ithaca, MI 48847. Klein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Klein_Carolyn.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"91\" height=\"129\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3818\" \/>Carolyn A. Klein died Friday, March 1, 2019 at the age of 83. She was born October 15, 1935 in Escanaba, MI the daughter of the late Joseph and Palmyra (Povolo) Sefcik.  Carolyn was a Proud Yooper being born and raised there. Growing up in Michigan\u2019s Upper Peninsula had its peculiar privileges. Carolyn was voted the Prettiest Baby in Delta County in 1936 and in 1952 she was the Smelt Queen of the local festival in Nahma. She moved to the Lower Peninsula to find work and was introduced to Lawrence \u201cLarry\u201d Klein on a blind date and after a short time the two were married on May 30, 1959. Larry passed on December 19, 2008.<\/p>\n<p>Carolyn was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fowler and retired as the church secretary.  She loved spending time with her family and friends including \u201cThe Bag Ladies\u201d and \u201cThe Church Ladies\u201d. Carolyn was a loving and fun loving person whose smile will be missed by many.<\/p>\n<p>Surviving are her children, Charles (Lisa) Klein of Brighton, Terri (Alan) Gove, Diane (Lee) Zuker, Nancy (Charlie) Perkins all of St. Johns and Joseph (Tina) Klein of Holland; grandchildren, Madison Klein and Nicholas Klein, Ben (Katrin) and Drew (Raye) Sleep, Katie (Nate) Conley, Chris (Kaitlyn) Zuker, Michael Zuker, Jake Perkins, Rachel Perkins, Nate Klein, Clara Klein, Jeremy (Jenna) Gove and Joshua Gove; great grandchildren, Scarlett and Henry Sleep, Graham and Quinn Conley and Leo Zuker with two more great grandchildren on the way; a sister, Joanie (John) Grimes of Anderson, IN; an aunt, Judy Mikus  of Powers, MI three sisters-in-law Monica Pung, Marguerite Klein and Doris Klein and numerous nieces and nephews.<\/p>\n<p>Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 AM Monday, March 4, 2019 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fowler with Rev. Fr. John Klein as Celebrant and Rev. Fr. Dennis Howard as Concelebrant. Rite of Committal will follow at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends 2:00 to 8:00 PM Sunday, March 3, 2019 at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keckcolemanfh.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0000CC\">Keck-Coleman Funeral Home<\/font><\/a> , St. Johns. A rosary will be prayed at 4:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home.<\/p>\n<p>Special thanks to her nephew and niece Steve and Ann Schafer and numerous kind and generous family, friends and neighbors who selflessly provided loving care and assistance. Also, special thanks to the nurses and staff of Sparrow Hospital, Sparrow Hospice and Hazel Findlay Country Manor for their loving and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers any memorials made will be given to local charities who support the under privileged in our community.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Dean William Pope<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/pope_dean.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"91\" height=\"129\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3825\" \/>Dean William Pope was born on April 27, 1925 in St. Johns, MI to Donald and Neva (Hettler) Pope. He graduated from Rodney B. Wilson High School in St. Johns, MI and DeForest Technical Training Institute in Chicago, IL. He married Martha Elizabeth Silvers on May 27, 1950.<\/p>\n<p>Dean owned and operated Dean Pope Television Sales &#038; Service in Lansing, MI for 37 years. He was a charter member of Kiwanis Club of North Lansing, a member of Lansing Area Golden K Kiwanis Club, and a member of Delta Presbyterian Church.<\/p>\n<p>Dean is survived by 3 daughters, Susan (Ron) Delp, Sally (Rich) Dalton, and Sheila (Tim) Darnell; 6 grandchildren, Steven (Gina) Delp, Kevin (Emily) Delp, Michael (Sarah) Dalton, Katie (Patrick) Thomas, Ronaldean Darnell, and Timmy Darnell; and 9 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Bonita Heibeck of St. Johns, MI. He was predeceased by his wife, Martha; and brother-in-law, Ronald Heibeck.<\/p>\n<p>Visitation will be 4-7 PM Thursday, February 28, 2019 at Tiffany Funeral Home, 3232 W. Saginaw, Lansing. A private family funeral service will be held.<\/p>\n<p>The family would like to express their most heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Bickford Assisted Living (West Lansing) and Compassus Hospice for their loving care of Dad and support to the family.
