It was a cold and breezy day so great for Jeff to do his thing.<\/p>\n<p>This was very interesting to see as I have not had the opportunity to do so. Now I can scratch this off my &#8220;bucket list&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Jim is with Finesse Ice Sculpting from Shelby Township down near Detroit. The two young lads on the bench became Jim&#8217;s little helpers, and they were thrilled to do so.<\/p>\n<p>The event was at Clairmont Coffee, so there was plenty of coffee and doughnuts to have. This also provided light for the church and later, for the hall \u2013 all on one fuse located in the parsonage basement.<\/p>\n<p>The large wax candles on the big Christmas tree would be replaced by electric bulbs. No longer would there be that feeling of uneasiness as the men used long handled lighters to light the tree candles and then had to snuff out the candles in a similar dangerous manner.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Maralyn&#8217;s Pet Corner<\/strong> &#8211; Dog Park Safety Tips for Pet Parents<br \/>\ncourtesy of Deidre Grieves<\/p>\n<p>When most pet owners think about dog parks, they conjure up images of fenced-in play areas where dogs roam free and have fun. And in many respects, that\u2019s true.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDog parks are a great way for well-socialized, healthy dogs to exercise off-leash and interact with their own kind,\u201d says Dr. Jennifer Coates, a veterinarian based in Fort Collins, Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>And while dog parks are generally fun places, dog park accidents are not uncommon. In fact, according to Nationwide Insurance, their pet insurance policy holders spent $10.5 million dollars in 2016 alone just to treat pet injuries that happen at the dog park.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDog parks unleash a totally different dynamic than simply walking your dog down the block,\u201d says Dr. Rachel Lippman, a New York City veterinarian. \u201cSo, pet owners need to carefully consider whether or not their dog will be safe, both for themselves and other dogs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Dog Park Safety Tips to Follow<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To avoid dangerous mishaps, make sure to follow these dog safety tips while at the dog park.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Get your dog vaccinated<\/p>\n<p>While you may be eager to take your new puppy to the park to watch him play around with other dogs, don\u2019t rush it. Ensuring that your dog has all of his vaccinations is necessary to protect him from transferable diseases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it is impossible to determine the health status of all the dogs there, it is best to only bring fully vaccinated dogs to a dog park,\u201d says Dr. Coates.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Consider your pet\u2019s size<\/p>\n<p>Many dog parks break out play areas for large dogs and small dogs, and it\u2019s a good idea to use these designated areas to prevent possible injuries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery small dogs should only be allowed to play with dogs of a similar size,\u201d says Dr. Lippman. \u201cEven if larger dogs are perfectly friendly, sometimes the difference in size can cause accidents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Don\u2019t bring young puppies to the dog park<\/p>\n<p>In addition to not having all their vaccinations, puppies shouldn\u2019t go to the dog park without socializing in a more controlled environment first. Very young dogs may not know how to interact with other dogs, which may cause stress or conflicts that can affect a puppy\u2019s overall socialization process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPuppies under the age of 4 months should be socialized under more tightly controlled conditions,\u201d says Dr. Coates, \u201csuch as with a puppy class run by your veterinarian or a reputable trainer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Make sure your dog masters basic dog training cues<\/p>\n<p>Before going to a dog park, ensure that your canine companion knows how to follow important dog training cues, such as \u201csit,\u201d \u201cstay\u201d and \u201ccome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Lippman explains that teaching your dog to respond to your calls is the most important command to know if you\u2019re planning on taking him to the dog park.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want your dog to come when called even when distractions\u2014such as 20 other dogs\u2014are present,\u201d she says. \u201c\u2018Come\u2019 can save your dog\u2019s life and save you from futilely running after them if they decide they aren\u2019t ready to go home just yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Check the area for trash<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re looking for a dog park, make sure to find one that is well taken care of. And, before letting your dog loose, do a quick check to see if there\u2019s anything on the ground that could be potentially dangerous for your dog.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCheck for things like chicken bones, trash and anything else you wouldn\u2019t want your dog getting ahold of,\u201d says Dr. Lippman.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Always keep an eye on your dog<\/p>\n<p>When you are at the dog park, it\u2019s essential to pay attention and keep a close watch on your pup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe observant,\u201d says Dr. Coates. \u201cNever get so engrossed in a conversation\u2014or with your phone\u2014that you are going to miss the sometimes subtle signs that your dog is in a situation that requires intervention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Lippman agrees that monitoring your dog while at the dog park is part of responsible pet ownership. \u201cIt\u2019s important to always, always supervise your dog, even if they are generally well-behaved and friendly,\u201d she says. \u201cDog fights can happen very quickly, and it\u2019s important to always keep an eye out and make sure everyone is getting along.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Dog Park Gear to Keep Your Pet Safe<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re planning on visiting a dog park, it\u2019s important to be prepared with the right dog supplies to keep your pet happy and safe.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Dog Poop Bags<\/p>\n<p>All pet parents should bring along their own dog poop bags, like these Frisco planet-friendly dog poop bags, just in case the dog park does not provide or runs out of bags.
