Mobile Soup kitchen starts 2018 season in area <\/strong><\/p>\n

His Cup Runneth Over, a mobile soup kitchen, is starting up its 2018 free soup season. The first stop will be at<\/p>\n

– Suntree Apartments, 1100 Sunview Dr., St. Johns, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, April 12.<\/p>\n

Soup, bread, fruit and dessert will be served to all who come free of charge. All are welcome.<\/p>\n

Election Inspectors needed<\/strong><\/p>\n

The City of St. Johns is looking for election inspectors.<\/p>\n

Registered voters of Clinton County interested in serving as an Election Inspector for the City of St. Johns on election days should fill out an Election Inspector Application at the City Clerk\u2019s Office, 100 East State Street, Suite #1100, St. Johns. It is also available on the website.<\/p>\n

The Clinton County Clerk will be conducting training this summer that is required every two years. If you have questions or would like more information, you may contact the city clerk\u2019s office at 224-8944 extension 223.<\/p>\n

Save the date for Historical Society potluck<\/strong><\/p>\n

The theme for this year’s potluck is Clinton County Postal Carriers and Post Offices. The Clinton County Historical Society is looking for photos and\/or stories of your family connections to Clinton County postal history. Please send what you have to share to our e-mail ccgensoc@yahoo.com<\/a> or have your local post office send it to PO Box 174, St. Johns, MI 48879 by the end of May.<\/p>\n

Please put this date on your calendar.<\/em><\/p>\n

Potluck info: June 28, 2018; 6 \u2013 8:30 p.m.; AgroLiquid, 1130 S. DeWitt Rd., St. Johns. Please bring a dish to pass and your own place setting. Drinks will be furnished.<\/p>\n

Note: If you have a Clinton County ancestor who served in WWI you can help us honor his or her name by sharing photos, letters, documents or other artifacts relating to his or her service to our country. Museum staff can scan the item so you can keep the original, or they will gladly accept them as donations to the museum where they will be preserved for future generations, if that is your wish.<\/p>\n

There will be photo scanning available at the potluck. All Clinton County related photos are appreciated.<\/p>\n

\n

FOMR schedule Maple River Cleanup<\/strong> – April 14<\/p>\n

The Friends of the Maple River (FOMR) are planning their 12th Annual Maple River River Cleanup and Logjam Removal Day on Saturday, April 14th. Volunteers are needed to pick trash, old tires, and debris found along the edge of the Maple River; along roads near the river; and at bridges and river access points on the river. The FOMR are also hoping to put 3 or 4 crews on the river to remove obstacles that block river enthusiasts from floating the river in canoes, kayaks, and small boats.<\/p>\n

Anyone interested in helping on this environmental conservation project is asked to meet at 9:00 am at the Elsie Dam located on Island Road, one mile west of the Village of Elsie. The trash pickup and log jam work will run from 9:00 AM \u2013 1:00 PM. Work crews will be organized, assignments made, and supplies provided.<\/p>\n

Volunteers should wear the appropriate clothing for the weather conditions, heavy duty footwear or boots, and gloves.
\nVolunteers wishing to help with log jam, tree, and brush removal will need a jon boat, canoe, or kayak, waders, and a saw or chainsaw. This work will only take place if the river is at normal levels or lower. State law requires a Coast Guard approved personal flotation device (PFD) for each person in a water craft for river travel.<\/p>\n

Fire Hydrant Flushing Program<\/strong><\/p>\n

The City of St. Johns Water Department personnel will be flushing all fire hydrants in the city. Flushing of the hydrants is done in spring and fall.<\/p>\n

The schedule for flushing will be:
\nM-21 North from April 2-16, 2018
\nM-21 South from April 17- May 1, 2018<\/p>\n

Flushing will be done between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.<\/p>\n

If you have any questions, please call the Water Department at 224-8944 ext. 235 or ext. 282 between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.<\/p>\n

LAFCU offers $5,000 in scholarships to high school seniors <\/strong><\/p>\n

LAFCU is accepting applications for its 2018 Write to Educate Essay Contest that offers two $2,500 college scholarships to high school seniors and allows them each to select a charity to receive a $500 donation from LAFCU. The Lansing State Journal is the community sponsor of the contest.<\/p>\n

The entry deadline is April 30. The scholarships can be used at Lansing Community College or Baker College\u2019s Owosso campus. Applications are available online at www.lafcu.com\/lafcumyway<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Each winner will select a charity to receive a $500 donation from LAFCU. The options are:
\n\u2022 Big Brothers Big Sisters Michigan Capital Region
\n\u2022 Building Twentyone
\n\u2022 Shiawassee Community Foundation Youth Advisory Council<\/p>\n

Applicants do not need to be members of LAFCU, but they must attend high school in LAFCU\u2019s service territory, which is the counties of Barry, Calhoun, Clinton<\/em>, Eaton, Gratiot, Ingham, Ionia, Jackson, Livingston, Montcalm and Shiawassee.<\/p>\n

Briggs District Library News<\/strong><\/p>\n

The annual St. Johns-Konan Friendship Society Art Reception will be held at the library on Tuesday April 10 from 7:00-8:00 pm. The art work will be on display from March 26 to May 4.<\/p>\n

Spring Program<\/em> – \u201cEgg-stra, Egg-stra read all about it\u201d Ages 4-6 (independent listeners) are invited to join us on Monday, April 9 from 6:30-7:30 for a night of \u201cegg-citing\u201d stories, \u201cegg-tastic\u201d games\/music\/movement, and an \u201cegg-cellent\u201d snack. Registration is required and is open now.<\/p>\n

LEGO Block Party<\/em> – There will be plenty of LEGO building fun and games on Monday, April 16 from 6:30-7:30 at this family friendly event. This program is open to all whom wish to attend and it will be held at Lowe United Methodist Church, 5485 W Lowe Rd, St. Johns. Registration for this event is appreciated and is open now.

\nToddler Storytime<\/em> – Children ages 2-3 (with a participating adult) are invited to join us on Wednesday mornings at 10:30-11:00 from May 9th through May 30th for a howling good time. We will be exploring zoo animals through stories, music, creative movement, crafts, and games. Registration is required and will be begin Wednesday, April 11th.<\/p>\n

Chef\u2019s Surprise<\/em> – Come twist yourself into a pretzel on Tuesday, May 22nd from 6:00- 7:30. Children ages 7-10 are invited to join us for a night of pretzel making fun. Registration is required and begins on April 24th.<\/p>\n

Tales to Tails<\/em> \u2013 Free Reading Program with 15 minute sessions for children ages 6-12 to practice reading aloud to Ruger, a certified therapy dog. Summer Schedule: 2nd Thursdays, 6\/14, 7\/12 & 8\/9 from 6:30-7:15. Extra sessions will be considered if time slots fill up. This program encourages confidence and reading skills over the summer in a relaxing environment. Registration is required and begins Thursday, May 17th.<\/p>\n

\"\"Traveling Poets Reading<\/em> \u2013 Lansing\u2019s first Poet Laureate, Dennis Hinrichsen, will be at the library on Tuesday, April 17 at 6:30 p.m. He, along with other local poets, will read and talk about their work, while introducing us to different styles of poetry. No library card is needed for this program, but advance registration is appreciated and is now available.<\/p>\n

Bookaholics Book Club<\/em> \u2013 There is still time to read NOW I SEE YOU, a memoir by Nicole C. Kear, before the Bookaholics meet on Thursday, April 19. Kear shares the story of how she, at the age of 19, coped with the life-changing diagnosis that she was going blind. Deciding to keep her illness a secret, she must deal with varying consequences that decision inflicts on Kear and her family. Copies of the book are now available. The club meets at 6:30p.m. at the library, and new members are always welcome.<\/p>\n

Teen Clean-up Day<\/em> – Teens are invited to help us clean-up the library and earn some volunteer hours. We will be doing some spring cleaning both inside and outside of the library on Friday, April 20th between the hours of 3 and 5pm. Registration is not required but is appreciated.<\/p>\n

Teen Program<\/em> \u2013 Teens are invited to test out their teamwork and problem-solving skills when we turn the library into an Escape Room! This fun event takes place on Friday, May 11 at 6:00 p.m. Registration is required and begins on Friday, April 13.<\/p>\n

Library Closure<\/em> – The Library will close at 1:00pm on Friday April 27 for staff training. The drop box on the Library porch will be available for returns throughout this closure.<\/p>\n

Leonard announces April office hours<\/strong><\/p>\n

Speaker of the House Tom Leonard, R-DeWitt, will host office hours to meet with local residents and discuss their concerns about state government. Speaker Leonard represents Michigan\u2019s 93rd District.<\/p>\n

The coffee hours will take place at on Friday, April 13, 8:00 a.m. \u2013 9:30 a.m., Big Boy, 1408 Old U.S. 27, St. Johns, MI 48879.<\/p>\n

Congressman John Moolenaar announced office hours to be held by constituent relations representatives at locations throughout the Fourth District. The purpose of the office hours is to help residents in need of assistance with a federal agency, like the IRS and the VA.<\/p>\n
