Van Vleet, Elsie Remus, Emily Mildred Sykora<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Obituaries<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Agnes Clara Schafer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/schafer_agnes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"91\" height=\"129\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6928\" \/>Agnes Clara Schafer, age 83 of Pewamo, MI, passed away Thursday, December 26, 2019 at Grace Haven Assisted Living, St. Johns, MI.<\/p>\n<p>A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Pewamo, MI, at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, December 30, 2019 with Rev. Fr. Darrel Kempf officiating. Burial will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery, Pewamo, MI. Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2019 from 6-8 P.M. with a Rosary being prayed at 5:30 P.M. Visitation will also be held on Sunday, December 29, 2019 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. a Rosary will be prayed at 1:30 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes &#8211; Goerge Chapel, Fowler, MI.<\/p>\n<p>Agnes was born in Dallas Township, MI on May 25, 1936 the daughter of Edward and Laura (Goerge) Schafer.  Agnes married Delbert Schafer on October 18, 1958; he affectionately called her &#8220;Poopsie&#8221;.  Delbert passed away on October 4, 2004. Agnes resided most of her life in Pewamo.<\/p>\n<p>Agnes loved to watch birds and work in her garden.  Christmas was her favorite holiday, she went above and beyond to decorate, the more lights the better.  Agnes played piano by ear.  Her faith, attending daily mass and prayer was an important part of her life.  She loved to play cards with her friends and family. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Pewamo and was a member of the Altar Society for many years.<\/p>\n<p>She is survived by her son Gary and Maureen Schafer of Westphalia, MI; son Dean and Julie Schafer of Fowler, MI; son Scott and Karen Schafer of Pewamo, MI; son Kevin and Tina Schafer of Fowler, MI; daughter Kari and Mike Schneider of St. Johns, MI; 19 grandchildren: Nicole, Holly, Katie, Cody, Amanda, Aubrey, Brianne, Travis, Tara, Zachary, Zoie, Adam, Jason, Kayla, Ben, Jack, Michael, Jordan and Tyler; 3 great-grandchildren: Charlotte, Hazel and Celia; brother Jerome and Connie Schafer of DeWitt, MI; sister Theresa Stump of Pewamo, MI. Agnes was preceded in death by her parents, husband Delbert, siblings: Joey, Michael (Irene), Edward, John, Elizabeth (Clayton) Kramer, Martha (Steve) Fedewa, Rita (Bernie) Walker and her brother-in-law Leon Stump.<\/p>\n<p>Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic School in Pewamo or the Fowler VFW. The family is being served by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithfamilyfuneralhomes.com\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0000CC\">Smith Family Funeral Homes<\/font><\/a> &#8211; Goerge Chapel, Fowler, MI.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Betty Delores Dunham<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/dunham_betty.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"91\" height=\"129\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6884\" \/>Betty Delores Dunham, age 55, died Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born October 11, 1964 in St. Johns, MI the daughter of Allen and Jean (Cornell) Schultz. Betty grew up on her parent\u2019s farm and enjoyed the rural way of life. She graduated from St. Johns High School, Class of 1982.<\/p>\n<p>On August 14, 1993 she married Clyde Dunham of Hulbert, MI and that is where they made their home. Betty worked at the Soo Locks Boat Tours and was the Hulbert Township Treasurer in Chippewa County. She also worked for many years at the U.S. Post Office in Hulbert as Post Mistress. She was well known to the residents of Hubert and made many friends. Betty was artistic and liked to draw. She enjoyed the wildlife which roamed outside of their rural home on the edge of the Hiawatha National Forest.<\/p>\n<p>Surviving is her husband, Clyde; two daughters, Jessica Lee Schultz and Kate Lynne Dunham; step daughters, Angela (Austin) Olmstead and Autumn Huffman; grandchildren, Michael Dunham, Zachary and Haley Olmstead, and Charles and Leonard Huffman. Also surviving is a brother, Glenn Schultz; three sisters, Beth (Richard) Chipchase, Joan (Raymond) Gross and Bonnie (Kevan) Smith all of Clinton County, Michigan; a nephew, Raymond Gross and nieces, Rachel Ward, Samantha Gross and Becky Chipchase.<\/p>\n<p>Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, December 30, 2019 at Pilgrim United Methodist Church 2965 W. Parks Rd. St. Johns with Pastor Andy Croel officiating. Interment will be in the spring of 2020 at Hulbert Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends 2-4 and 6-8 PM Sunday, December 29 at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keckcolemanfh.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0000CC\">Keck-Coleman Funeral Home<\/font><\/a>, St. Johns. Memorials may be made to the family.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Douglas C. Weir<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Weir_Douglas.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"91\" height=\"129\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6880\" \/>Douglas C. Weir died Sunday, December 22, 2019 at the age of 80. He was born January 1, 1939 in St. Johns, MI the son of Stanley and Fannie (Conn) Weir.  He was a graduate of Rodney B. Wilson High School in St. Johns, Class of 1956 and continued his education at MSU earning his Bachelor\u2019s Degree in Engineering.  He continued his education in California for a short time and returned to Michigan where he became a member of the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers a profession he worked in for over 50 years. During his working career he had his own company Engineering Design Inc.; starting in 1973 to 1998 and thereafter he continued to work as Weir Engineering at home. Doug did engineering work for the City of St. Johns and several other municipalities.<\/p>\n<p>Doug was an Army veteran and enjoyed fishing, spending time outdoors and was involved in square dancing in both St. Johns and DeWitt for over 35 years. More recently he was instrumental in providing his expertise in the restoration of the railroad cars on display at the Clinton Northern Railroad in St. Johns.  On February 3, 1965 he married Marcia Grinnell, and she survives him.<\/p>\n<p>Also surviving are two daughters, April Lovaas of DeWitt and Deb (Scott) Redman of St. Johns; four grandchildren, Zachary and Jennifer Barks and Nicholas and Emily Redman; one brother-in-law, Roger Grinnell of NV and one sister-in-law, Donna Sawyer of CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Marcia Davis and a son-in-law, Douglas Lovaas.<\/p>\n<p>Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, December 27, 2019 at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keckcolemanfh.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0000CC\">Keck-Coleman Funeral Home<\/font><\/a>, St. Johns with Pastor Judy Hazle officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends 4-7 PM on Thursday, December 26 at the funeral home.  Military honors will be provided by the St. Johns Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to the Clinton Northern Railroad or a charity of donor\u2019s choice.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>James W. Peters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/peters_james.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"91\" height=\"129\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6875\" \/>James W. &#8220;Jim&#8221; Peters, age 84, of St. Johns, MI, passed away Friday, December 20, 2019, at his home.<\/p>\n<p>A Memorial Service will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes &#8211; Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI, at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, January 3, 2020, with Pastor John Jakus officiating. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Elsie, MI. Visitation will be held on Friday from 12:00 PM until the time of the service at the funeral home.<\/p>\n<p>James was born in Rogers City, Michigan on February 25, 1935, the son of Ray W. and Lydia (Simon) Peters. On June 27, 1959, Jim married Joyce Barbara Dennis in Bannister, Michigan. They were blessed with 58 years of marriage prior to her passing on September 10, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Jim retired from local 324 operating engineers after 50 years of service. He also worked at Culver Construction and Brown Brothers Construction. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and watching western movies. Jim liked tinkering in his garage and with his tractors. He loved his children and grandchildren very much. He was a member of the Faith Fellowship Bible Church, St. Johns, MI.<\/p>\n<p>He is survived his children: Jackie and Richard Edlin of Harrison, MI; James and Tammy Barth-Tyler Peters, Jr. of Terre Haute, IN; Jerry and Roblyn Peters of Seattle, WA; Jody and Pamela Peters of St. Johns, MI; Joe and Lisa Peters of Milton, FL; 10 grandchildren:  Jeremy Peters, Jessica and Sam Fruend, Christin and Ben Coleman, Crystal Sklodowski, Colby Peters, Kody Peters, Taylor Peters, Dakota Peters, Skylar Peters, and Robert \u201cBubba\u201d Peters; 2 step-grandchildren: Dylan and Dawson; 8 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters: Keith and Mary Peters of Ithaca, MI; Dorothy and John Mitchell of Swartz Creek, MI; Richard Peters of Elsie, MI; Gayle and Dave Green of Henderson, MI; and Barbara Stuckey of Alma, MI. Van Vleet<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/vanvleet_bruce.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"91\" height=\"129\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6855\" \/>Bruce R. Van Vleet, age 84, passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Grace Haven Assisted Living Center.  Bruce was born on January 3, 1935 in St. Johns the son of Robert F. and Arleita B. (Armstrong) Van Vleet.  He graduated from Rodney B. Wilson High School in 1953 and worked for Clinton County Road Commission as a truck driver for 30 years, retiring in 1993. On October 2, 1960 he married Barbara J. Schenck in Indiana.  Bruce was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church, loved playing games with his grandchildren, especially Croquet, fishing and playing cards.<\/p>\n<p>Survivors are his wife, Barbara, children Brian Van Vleet of Niles, MI, Brad (Robin) Van Vleet and Brenda (Billy) Geer both of St. Johns, and Betsy (Jim) Clark of AZ; three grandchildren, Jacob Van Vleet, Erika Geer and Alexander Clark and siblings, Gary (Shirley) Van Vleet of St. Johns, Ronald (Iris Jean) Van Vleet of CO. and Janet (Ed) Thompson of CA.  He was preceded in death by grandson Samuel Geer and sister Marlene Monfort.<\/p>\n<p>The family will receive friends and relatives at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keckcolemanfh.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0000CC\">Keck-Coleman Funeral Home<\/font><\/a> on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, March 19, 2020 at 1:00 P.M.  Burial will be at South Bingham Cemetery.  Memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor\u2019s choice.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Elsie Remus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/remus_elsie.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"91\" height=\"129\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6853\" \/>Elsie Remus, age 89 of St. Johns, Michigan, passed away on December 19, 2019 at Hazel Findlay Country Manor. Visitation for family and friends will be from 2-4pm on Saturday, December 28, 2019 at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.watkinsfuneralhomes.com\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0000CC\">Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes<\/font><\/a>, Laingsburg Chapel, Laingsburg, Michigan. A Celebration of Elsie&#8217;s Life will take place at a later Spring date.<\/p>\n<p>Elsie was the daughter of Otto and Gladys Rasmussen and was married to her beloved husband Robert Remus for 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>As a devoted homemaker, Elsie was an example of love for her family. Her joys in sewing, cooking, baking, crocheting and card making blessed many in her life. Elsie&#8217;s faith and devotion to her Heavenly Father helped guide her strong family values, and compassion for people. She also worked outside the home in the health care field as a Nurse&#8217;s Aide and Medical Receptionist, also as a Church Secretary. Elsie was loved much and will truly be missed.<\/p>\n<p>She is survived by her daughters, Susanne (Gordon) Barneko of Potterville, MI, Annie (Alan) Mandigo of Tacoma, WA, and Celia (Dan) Keen of Brodhead, WI, 10 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.<\/p>\n<p>She was preceded in death by her parents Otto and Gladys Rasmussen; her husband, Robert Remus; brothers Ronald and Ernest Rasmussen; and sisters: Margie Huffman, Bertha Steffens, Mary Weismiller, Josephine Smith and Luretta Milekovich.<\/p>\n<p>In lieu of flowers: Memorial gifts may be sent to Hazel Findlay Country Manor Courtyard Garden Fund designated for Elsie Remus memorial, or online to The Gideons International, who place Bibles in many locations locally and worldwide.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Emily Mildred Sykora<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/sykora_emily.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"91\" height=\"129\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6851\" \/>Emily Mildred Sykora, age 101 of St. Johns, MI, passed away Thursday, December 19, 2019, at Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor, St. Johns, MI.<\/p>\n<p>Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes &#8211; Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI on Monday, December 23, 2019 at 2:00 P.M.  Burial will take place at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, MI. Visitation will be held on Monday, December 23, 2019 from 11:00 A.M.- 2:00 P.M. prior to the service at the funeral home.<\/p>\n<p>Emily was born in Chicago, IL on October 24, 1918 the daughter of Stephen and Elizabeth (Laida) Mosne.  She attended DeWitt Country School.  Emily married Fred Sykora on August 6, 1944; Fred passed away on January 3, 2006.  Emily resided most of her life in St. Johns.<\/p>\n<p>Emily worked at Motor Wheel during WWII and Rouser&#8217;s Drug Store.  She was a farmer&#8217;s wife and homemaker for most of her life.  Emily enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren and playing cards with her family.  She also enjoyed tending her many chickens, farming, but she enjoyed gardening the most, and anything fun such as craft shows.  Emily was an avid cook and baker.<\/p>\n<p>The Sykora Family would like to express a special thank you to the staff at Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor for all the special care and activities that Emily loved to take part in.<\/p>\n<p>She is survived by her son Dennis and Donita Sykora of New Hudson, MI; daughter Delana &#8220;Dee&#8221; and Charles Lewis of Owosso, MI; 3 grandchildren; and 2 sisters: Judy Skea of St. Johns, MI; and June Toth of St. Johns, MI.
