MMDHD Update<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mid-Michigan District Health Department is reporting the following COVID-19 positive cases and deaths (as of May 20, 2020):<\/p>\n

Clinton County: 138 cases and 10 deaths
\nGratiot County: 56 cases and 4 deaths
\nMontcalm County: 61 cases and 1 death<\/p>\n

Update on COVID-19 EMS efforts <\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As EMS providers and practitioners are on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, Michigan Association of Ambulance Services<\/span><\/a> has been working to provide support to members during this difficult time. That has included advocating in both Lansing and Washington D.C. for much-needed relief that is essential to the future of the industry. Below is an overview of those efforts:<\/p>\n

Federal Advocacy<\/em>: MAAS has submitted letters to Michigan\u2019s U.S. Senators asking for assistance in helping ambulance providers obtain priority access to personal protection equipment, increasing the percentage of funds ambulance providers receive under the Public Health and Social Services Emergency Fund, and obtaining reimbursement for providing patients with treatment in place when a hospital transport is not required.<\/p>\n

State Advocacy<\/em>: MAAS also submitted a letter to Governor Whitmer and legislative leaders asking for Michigan\u2019s Medicaid reimbursement rate for ambulance services to be increased by 25 percent, putting Michigan in line with what other states have done for their ambulance services.<\/p>\n

MAAS also asked the governor to cancel the next payment under the Quality Assurance Assessment Program, due to the reduction in revenue and transport volume.<\/p>\n

Lastly, MAAS asked for flexibility in the education proposal the governor recently proposed for frontline workers to include tuition reimbursement for paramedic and EMT training programs.<\/p>\n

Eureka bottle return drive is July 11<\/strong><\/p>\n

Organizing will be collecting your bottle returns at Eureka Elementary School on Saturday, July 11 from 10 a.m. – Noon.<\/p>\n

Private well owners urged to protect their wells from flooding<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Michigan Ground Water Association is urging all private well owners to prepare their water wells for potential flooding and extreme weather conditions in the coming months.<\/p>\n

The MGWA urges Private Well Owners to visit the National Ground Water Associations (NGWA\u2019s) wellowner.org<\/span><\/a>, which provides crucial information to water well owners on best practices to protect their systems before and after flooding. Using the knowledge of the industry\u2019s top professionals, the site offers step-by-step instructions on maintenance procedures and a database of certified MGWA contractors<\/span><\/a> for testing and repairs.<\/p>\n

The flooding of water well systems can lead to permanent system damage and the possibility of water contamination. Exposure to E. coli, coliform, and other pathogenic microbes from human and animal fecal matter have occurred following major flooding events.<\/p>\n

Private wells that are susceptible to flooding or potential contamination include:<\/p>\n

– Wells that are older, completed in areas now designated as floodplains
\n– Wells in which the casing is not finished above the high-water level
\n– Wells not adequately capped or sealed, or older wells with shallow grout or insufficient surface seal
\n– Wells in areas structurally unstable, or where previous erosion or subsidence has compromised the structure and landform
\n– Wells with an abnormal affinity for bad luck.<\/p>\n
