Capitol City Chordsmen bring harmony July 17 to Concert in the Park

An award-winning barbershop harmony chorus entertains guests July 17 at the William E. Tennant Performance Shell when the Capitol City Chordsmen take the stage in the St. Johns Concert in the Park summer music series. There is no admission charge to the 7 p.m. show at the lovely outdoor venue located at the St. Johns City Park in St. Johns.

The all male a cappella Barbershop Chorus will perform a variety of favorite popular songs sung in the barbershop style that will have your toes tapping and your fingers snapping.

The Lansing chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, The Capitol City Chordsmen, is noted for its characteristics four-part barbershop harmony. The award-winning chorus will celebrate its 80th anniversary next year, delighting audiences with its consistent community performances and the annual show which has hosted the best of barbershop harmony including 24 international Quartet Champions. Past performances include the Wharton Center for the Performing Arts, Grand Ledge Opera House and Sparrow Hospital Cancer Survivor Luncheon along with many other shows in the mid-Michigan area.

Concert in the Park is sponsored by the Clinton County Arts Council and the City of St. Johns with support from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts. Concerts are held each Wednesday evening; rain or shine. The St. Johns Lions and Lioness Club staff a concession stand offering light refreshments.

Scenes of old St. Johns now in Museum school room

Scenes of old St. Johns painting by Jim Glass in 1987 is currently hanging in the School Room of the Paine-Gillam-Scott House. The Rudoni family donated the mural that was previously hanging in the dining area of KFC in St. Johns. Plan a visit to the Museum and test your knowledge of the history of St. Johns.

The 2019 Exhibit Police and Fire Departments artifacts are displayed in the Paine-Gillam-Scott House and the Carriage House. Wedding dresses also are displayed in several rooms of the house.

The Museum is open Wednesdays, 2-6 p.m. and Sundays, 1-4 p.m. Closed on holiday weekends.

Mint Festival Applications

The 35th Annual St Johns Mint Festival is just around the corner, which means applications to participate in weekend events are now due. All applications are accessible on the Mint Festival webpage at www.clintoncountychamber.org/mint. Some of the weekend events include:

Parade: the parade will be on Saturday, August 10 at 10 a.m. Initial applications to participate were due by July 5, but there are still some spaces left. The fee for commercial entries is $70, with non-profits and individuals with antique cars or tractors free.

Vendor Booths: all vendor booths are available on a first come, first served basis. Spaces remain in all areas, but are filing fast. Vendor booths are open all hours of the festival which are Friday: 2-8 p.m.; Saturday: 10 a.m. – 7 pm and Sunday: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

SideWalk Chalk Art Competition: Artwork must be completed by teams or individuals on Friday and Saturday, August 9 and 10 and then will be judged Sunday, August 11. Entry forms must be submitted onsite.

Photo Contest: Weather you are an aspiring photographer or just someone that fools around with the camera, your photos are welcome. All entries will be on display in Smith Hall throughout the weekend for attendee judging. Photos are due at the Chamber office by Friday, August 2.

Bocce Ball: Bocce Ball will be played Saturday afternoon and Sunday if needed on the County Fairgrounds. 2-person teams will compete. The fee to participate is only $10.

Garage Sale: If you would like the Mint Festival to help promote your garage sale that you will be holding during the Mint Festival weekend, then register your address with the Chamber by Friday, July 19. The fee is only $10 which gets you on flyers provided to all the garage sale participants, and on flyers passed out at the Chamber of Commerce office, on the festival grounds. The list of Garage Sale addresses will also be posted on the website Mint Festival page.

Briggs hosts braille StoryWalk

The Briggs District Library is very happy to be one of 35 libraries across Michigan participating in Braille Enhanced StoryWalk program.

On the east side of our building along Spring Street you will see 15 signs containing braille-enhanced pages from the book The Way Back Home by Oliver Jeffers.

The StoryWalk Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellog-Hubbard Library. StoryWalk is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson. This resource is supported in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services administered by the Library of Michigan.

Move for HAL on August 24

 

Are you looking for something fun to do with your friends and family? Are you not a golfer but would love to enjoy the scenery and beauty of The Emerald Golf Course? Then sign up for this 5k walk/run. It won’t disappoint and it’s for a good cause.

I Move for Hal became an official non profit organization in 2015. The purpose of our 501c3 is to raise awareness about Multiple Sclerosis and raise funds for a scholarship for a local St. Johns High School Senior and National MS Society-Michigan Chapter. One move at a time in memory of a great man, Hal Rice. Hoping one day there will be a cure for this horrible disease.

Course: Come experience The Gem of Mid-Michigan, The Emerald Golf Course, on a different level. Picture yourself running thru a state of the art golf course surrounded by stately Maples and tall great Oaks. The sounds of wildlife surround you as you run along the rolling fairways. 5k run/walk, all abilities and ages welcome.

The race will be professionally timed by the Michigan Running Foundation. Results will be posted during the race and online at Playmakers.com.

This race is endorsed by The Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and part of the 2019 Michigan Fitness Foundation Challenge. The challenge encourages Michiganders to engage with events that promote physical activity, health and wellness.
