St. Johns High School Theatre Department will present the 2020 MIFA one act productions of “The Book of Everything” and “Anna and August” on Saturday February 8, 2020 at John Glenn High School in Bay City.
The productions are directed by Jackie and Nathan Charneski and Luke Smith. Student directors for the main stage production of “The Book of Everything” are Lexi Hicks and Maggie Hallead. Student directors for the studio production of “Anna and August” are Maddi Conlin and Ellie Garwood. As a whole, 55 students are involved.
The main stage production is set in Amsterdam, 1951. Thomas Klopper is aged 9, nearly 10. He sees things others don’t see – a hailstorm in summer, tropical fish in the canals, a plague of green frogs… and Jesus. In his diary, The Book of Everything, he writes his greatest hope for the future: “When I grow up, I’m going to be happy.”
The studio production is set in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Anna takes the audience on the adventure of falling in love with her childhood friend August. From the playing of games in elementary school and their first kiss, to the awkward middle school years and finally to high school, we see their relationship blossom into the happily ever after Anna always wanted.
The MIFA Regional competition will take place Saturday February 8, 2020 at John Glenn High School in Bay City. Each production will have 45 minutes to perform and there will be a panel of 3 adjudicators to critique their performance. The main stage production has a performance time of 11:35 a.m. The studio production has a performance time of 3:35 p.m. Following the performances of the day, the adjudicators will present the awards. There are Excellence and Superior awards to be handed out. The productions that place 1st and 2nd with an overall 1 rating, will advance to the State competition at Avondale High School the following weekend.

Looking ahead to the 2020 Relay for Life
Plans are under way again for The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Clinton County. This year’s Relay will be held from Friday, May 8 beginning at 4:00 p.m. – Saturday, May 9 at 2:00 p.m. at the Depot Pavilion in downtown St. Johns.
Not sure what a Relay For Life event is? It’s an overnight walk where teams are formed by family and friends, businesses, civic organization, schools and faith-based groups. These teams come together in the fight against cancer. The Relay For Life event is not a race…it’s a “walk”…teams have at least one team member walking the entire time of the event….cancer doesn’t sleep, so we aren’t sleeping either. These teams come together to raise awareness and funds in the fight against cancer. Participants unite at the annual Relay For Life of Clinton County to celebrate all who have been touched by cancer, remembering loved ones lost, and take action for lifesaving change. Funds raised at this event help The American Cancer Society fund and conduct breakthrough research, and give cancer patients and their families the resources they need, like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals and a live 24/7 helpline (1-800-227-2345 / www.cancer.org) for answers and support.
We are blessed to have so many people and businesses in our community that are committed to putting an end to this monster we call cancer.
Are you interested in forming a team? Joining the planning committee? Becoming a sponsor? For more details go to event web site at www.relayforlife.org/clintoncounty.mi

LAFCU offers college scholarships, charity donations
LAFCU is accepting applications for its unique 2020 Write to Educate Essay Contest beginning February 1. The entry deadline is March 31.
The contest awards $5,000 in two $2,500 scholarships to high school seniors and asks each recipient to designate a charity to receive a $500 donation from LAFCU. The scholarships can be used at any accredited Michigan college or university beginning fall 2020.
Lansing State Journal is the community sponsor of the contest.
“LAFCU believes that higher education should be within reach of anyone who has the passion to pursue it,” said Kelli Ellsworth Etchison, LAFCU chief marketing officer. “That’s why the recipients are selected based solely on their one-page essay without regard to other factors such as grades. Every student who is a high school senior in Michigan qualifies to apply for this scholarship.”
For the essay, applicants are asked to examine technology in their life: Does it have a positive or negative effect on their personal safety? For example, how do they handle texting and driving, whether for themselves or others? The winning essays will be published in the Lansing State Journal.
In support of the credit union philosophy “People helping people,” LAFCU will donate $500 on behalf of each winner to one of the following charities of their choice:
• The Arc of Mid-Michigan
• Child and Family Charities
• CASA for Kids
Applicants do not need to be LAFCU members.
Information is at www.lafcu.com/lafcumyway where entries can also be uploaded.
