Penny Tahvonen’s pottery offers something for everyone

Open House on Sunday, August 3
Penny Tahvonen fell in love with clay the day her high school art teacher introduced her to it, and she has been producing pots of all shapes and sizes ever since. She has experimented with types and colors of glazes, different glazing techniques and firing, including raku pottery, which she learned from a friend who had studied the process in Korea.

While throwing pots has been one of her trademarks, Penny has also produced platters, 4-piece dinner sets, free-form pieces in which brightly-colored glass is melted in with the glazes, relief sculptures and many whimsical mugs, including one style that features St. Johns mint.
The CCAC Open House on Sunday, August 3, 1 – 3 PM, will feature Penny and some of her many creations. Penny quite likely has displayed her works in the CCAC Gallery longer than any other artist, and has been possibly the most prolific CCAC artist. Come in and chat with Penny while you enjoy refreshments and appreciate her artistry.
This event and the full month of August at the Gallery are sponsored by Stony Creek Essential Oils, which will feature a mint display.
The Gallery is located at 215 N. Clinton Ave. in St. Johns and information regarding this special event – and other Council related activities – can be obtained by calling 989-224-2429 or visiting clintoncountyarts.org.
