Senior Center members reach out to seniors

Atmosphere, trips, events and food
What makes the Clinton County Senior Center such a great place is its members. They are people from all walks of life that come together for fellowship, fun and learning. The Senior Center is located at 201 E Walker Street in St. Johns (1 block north of M-21 and 1 block east of Clinton Avenue). Several members wanted to reach out and share their experiences with other senior citizens to encourage them to come to the center.
Rod Hayes said “I love the welcoming atmosphere at the center. I come and play cards, work on puzzles, enjoy meals and always try to attend the special monthly events. Sometimes when I arrive my van is full. I live out in the country and pick up several friends along the way. I would encourage anyone that has not come down to join us. We will make you feel welcome”.
Audrey Meehling said “I come from Eureka and it is well worth the drive two to three times a week. I get great meals and meet lots of very nice people. When I first started coming I was a little nervous because I was by myself – that didn’t last long. As soon as I got there I got involved with people playing cards or just sitting and talking – you are not a stranger once you walk in the door. Come and join us and you will find friends that care”.
Sharon Rademacher said “the Senior Center has come to mean so much to me. There are so many things to do whether its bingo, exercising, playing Euchre or other games, eating great meals or just sitting and talking to people. I can even get my blood pressure checked there. I now even volunteer there one day a month and am anxious to join the Board of Directors. If you have never been to the Senior Center, come on down. We always have room for more people.”
Larry Mohr said “I’m probably not your typical person that goes to the senior center. I have a very active life and there is always something to be done around the house or yard. But I would not trade my time at the Senior Center for anything. I have met such great people there and I spend a lot of time while I’m there laughing. I especially like Trivia days, Euchre tournaments and all the other games and things we do – I even got into trying to make the tallest structure with marshmallows and pasta. Sometimes my involvement gives my wife and I a break from each other, sometimes she comes by herself to use the exercise room and then at other times we attend together – it’s really great that there is a place like the Senior Center available to seniors young and old. Come and join us and I’ll have you laughing in no time.”
The Clinton County Senior Center is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The center is open to any adult aged 55 and over. There is no cost to get in and there is no membership fee. Most activities are free with a minimal fee of $1 or $2 for things like bingo or Euchre. I just want to thank everyone in the luncheon staff and office staff for making it such a pleasure to partake of your wonderful lunches! All of you are doing a fantastic job of making it so special for the seniors. Keep up the good work. It’s also a nice social time to get together and chat. Congratulations on a job well done.

I joined the Senior Center when my husband passed away. I was lonely and needed a boost to get myself going. It was the best medicine for me.
I had a place to go every day if I chose to, have a good lunch and meet many people. I joined ceramics and the arts and crafts class. This kept me busy with my hands and mind. I joined several clubs but best of all I volunteered to get the library in shape. I love doing this job.
All of these wonderful opportunities for a lonely widow gave me a new life and new family. Many thanks to the caring people like Carol Waldman and Joanne Senecal.

We have been coming to the Center for about 25 years and consider it our “Home away from Home.” The people we’ve met through the years have been wonderful and are like family.
The staff is excellent and the food is the greatest. We travel from Bethpage to Glen Cove because it is The best!

I have been coming to the Glen Cove Senior Center for a long time and have seen many changes. This center is the most wonderful, warmest, caring place. We have daily lunches, bus pick-up, classes, lectures, trips, exercise, crafts, culture, movies, parties, bingo, clubs, shopping and most of all friendship, all available at our great Senior Center.

I have been a member of the SeniorCenter for many years. After my children grew up I had to find a meaningful way to occupy my days. I found this in joining the SeniorCenter. I participate in the activities offered at the Center which include working in the Rose Shoppe, line dancing and mah jong. I can honestly say I have found myself all over again in my senior years.

-Rose Mariangello

The Senior Center is a veritable hub of activity – there’s always something going on. I no sooner joined when I was scooped up to be an officer on the Golden Age Happy Hours Club. I so look forward to coming to the Center because as a disabled person it gets me out of the house a few days a week. I also volunteer for our medical transportation service. It’s such a great feeling of accomplishment.
We have such camaraderie among our members. I especially enjoy the one day trips. I never had so much fun. This sure beats being a couch potato!

The Senior Center is one of my homes away from home. The other is my church. Both places have friendly people who are glad to see you when you walk in. If you want a place to come to where you can find an activity to suit your interests, gifts and personality, come. I’ve found SO much pleasure helping with a few musical activities, and through them I have met terrific people.

One day my husband and I were riding by the SeniorCenter and we decided to join. What a difference it made in my husband’s life. He made many new friends, took day trips, and enjoyed the lunches. He looked forward to going to the Center. I enjoy going there. The people, the food and the activities are great. It’s our home away from home.
The staff is caring and very courteous to everyone. I can honestly say going to the Senior Center added years to my husband’s life.

-Laura DiLeo

We enjoy coming to the Center for the delicious lunches and conversation. There are many activities to choose from at the Center.
We also appreciate the variety of trips and the birthday celebrations are an important part of the Center. The meetings also keep us informed of what is happening. The staff is wonderful and it’s a pleasure to connect with other seniors. We are so glad we joined.
