Local Industries Participate in the 1964 Soap Box Derby
by Barry Bauer

Usually they started off the Soap Box Derby by holding a race between the three industries located in St. Johns. That would be Saylor-Beall, Sealed Power (Mahle), and Federal-Mogul.
In the lead and driving the Federal-Mogul car is Kermit Hart, plant manager. The other two drivers are unidentified.
The suspicious puff of smoke behind the Federal-Mogul car indicates that there was some hanky-panky going on and explains the big lead held by Federal-Mogul.
I’ve seen the car before at Federal-Mogul but I have no idea where it ended up. Bee’s Chevy & Olds used to have a collection of Soap Box Derby cars mounted on the hallway wall between the Parts Department and the Service Department. What’s left of them are now stored overhead in the Parts Department. I’m hoping to get photos of them soon with the help of Jeff Feldpausch, owner.
Maybe that’s where the Federal-Mogul car went.
