A Look Back

N. Clinton Ave. in 1937

From 1937 comes another photo taken during the conversion of N. Clinton Ave., downtown St. Johns, from brick pavers to a concrete paved street. What was interesting were the businesses located above the street level stores.
Above Bruno’s Restaurant at 100 N. Clinton Ave. is H. C. Clark Real Estate and Loans. The ground level store at 102 N. Clinton Ave. is mostly unidentified except to say it was an agency (insurance?) but above it was a dentist office.
Nowadays I think the second story space downtown is made up mostly of apartments and not businesses.
The mini-crane on tank tracks was probably used to move the curb and gutter forms in place.
