A Look Back

Downtown St. Johns from a High Place
by Barry Bauer

This photo was taken in 1972 from a high place, the old Clinton County Courthouse.
Outside of the 1957 Chevy on the left side of this photo there are no standout automobiles on N. Clinton Ave. They are generally early 1970s “gunboats” and weren’t noted for their sleek designs.
It’s nice to see again the Steel Hotel still in its place and trying to survive as a business. Three years later it was gone.
At the top of the photo is the old railroad train signal light where we used to make a U-turn when we were dragging main. Local officials finally banned the U-turn trying to stop the kids from dragging main, but the funny thing of it was that at least they knew what the kids were up to and where they were.
Nowadays parents would give a lot to know that.
