Walter “Benny” Stewart moved to St. Johns from Maryland in the 1970s and taught school at Pewamo-Westphalia. He made the album in two different photos. In the first photo he appeared as one of P-W’s teachers featured in a newspaper article. In this photo he’s working at Saylor-Beall in the office. Saylor-Beall is a manufacturer of air compressors and located in St. Johns.
Benny also worked for Maco Tool and Engineering after his time at Saylor-Beall.
In the background is a Gilbert mantle clock that Benny probably repaired. That was something he learned from his father-in-law who not only repaired clocks but also built them. We have one of his creations hanging on our wall and we cherish it.
Benny moved to a farm in the DeWitt area and I’ve since lost track of him. He was a man of many talents.
