Home remedies for constipated dogs or cats
Constipation is a relatively common complaint of pet owners that may include a history of decreased frequency of bowel movements and/or straining and/or urgency when trying to have bowel movements. One of the more common causes of constipation in dogs and cats is ingestion of indigestible material including hair, and other foreign bodies. Metabolic and electrolyte imbalances can also cause constipation in pets.
In cats there is a specific disease of the colon know an mega colon which can lead to repetitive bouts of constipation, often necessitating frequent enemas, manual removal of feces and special prescription diets and medication.
One of the simplest things a pet parent can do to help a pet with constipation is to add extra fiber to meals. Canned pumpkin and Metamucil or slalom husks are often quite helpful when added to meals. Vetasyl is a veterinary labeled product that can help constipation.
Since an imbalance in the bacterial population in the digestive track can occur, probiotics can often help such as
Fast Balance and Natural Digestive Enzymes. If symptoms persist or worsen a full veterinary assessment and workup for underlying causes of constipation should be done.
Something to do in making it easier to find your dog or cat:
We urge every pet owner to please have your pet wear and identification tag with your phone number and the number of your vet. These tags are inexpensive and can be made by you at pet smart, Petco and many other pet supply stores.
Imagine my surprise to find a dachshund on my porch one early morning, no identification on the dog. I was able to locate the owner by calling the local animal control and giving them my name and phone number with a description of the dog. One hour and a half later I received a call from the owner and it was her dog. Unfortunately, I have been unable to locate her cat.
So please, if you do not have tags for your pets, please get them or have your pets micro-chipped. Do it for your pet and your peace of mind.
Until next time
