Proceeds to benefit Museum
In conjunction with the Paine-Gillam-Scott Museum Guven Witteveen took the stories recorded by a Civil War veteran at the end of his life in 1935 and presented them along with pictures related to the events. All proceeds from sales of the $2.99 booklet will go to the museum, www.pgsmuseum.com. By using the free software at Amazon.com one can buy the book to read on a computer, smartphone or portable reading devices other than Amazon’s Kindle eBook reader.

Francis William Redfern (1842-1936) completed two enlistments in the army and one in the navy. This 9,500 word booklet covers the eventful months from March to December 1865 when he patrolled Harpers Ferry, hunted for President Lincoln’s assassin, marched in the Grand Review of Armies, and was reassigned to Colorado and Wyoming territories against Native American actions (mostly the Cheyenne and Arapaho nations). Retelling his experiences at age 23 personalizes these times. The addition of archival maps, photos and other illustrations by the project editor today helps bring the stories to life. See http://tinyurl.com/civilwar1865redfern for related links and updates.
For anyone interested in U.S. history, as well as the impacts upon Native American life, this book will be of interest, whether among students, local history enthusiasts or the general public. These rare words from the first-person perspective are a precious legacy today.
